GAME REVIEW Transistor - 6/10 Completion Time - 9 Hours A sci-fi action RPG, that requires a bit of strategy. Transistor takes place in a kind of noir sci-fi world. You play as Red, a famous singer whose voice has been stolen. The game begins as Red pulls a weapon out of what seems to be her lover? A close friend? A manager? Unsure, but it seemed to be someone who was very close to her. His soul finds his way into the weapon and guides Red on her journey of revenge. Transistor was developed by Supergiant Games, so naturally, the art, the music, the voice acting, & the environment are absolutely stunning. Hades is one of my favorite games, so I am slowly but surely working my way through the rest of Supergiant Games’ works. Transistor felt very lackluster when comparing it to Hades, however, this was only their second game to be released. The combat system was definitely unique. Once you enter an “arena”, you’ll begin a type of turn-based logic combat. You’ll freeze time and course out your movement as well as your actions. Once you set time back in motion, you get to watch how your decisions played out against the enemy. You’ll be able to upgrade your transistor (weapon) with different abilities or make the world more challenging. This was really fun and very different to combat in other games I’ve played. However, by the time I was about halfway through the game it became very tedious & monotonous, even with the upgrades. Additionally, I had no idea what was going on in the story, and maybe that was just a me problem. I couldn’t figure out why Red’s voice was stolen, why a soul would enter the transistor, why there seemed to be an apocalypse going on. I just felt like I was on cruise control and just going where the game told me to go without a real reason. This is one of those games where I both would and wouldn’t recommend it. If you find it on sale and are a fan of Supergiant Games, I would definitely give it a try. I just wouldn’t go into the game expecting something groundbreaking. I think I’m going to give Bastion a go next.

Maybe not for everyone if you really hate turn based combat. That being said I never really did either but still loved this game. The story, art and music makes it amazing, and it is fun to figure out broken builds.
