Old X360 General Rank player here.
It is an addictive game. I played long enough to learn the hard way that the Grizzly canister shell is actually WEAKER than a Scorpion’s. - Gameplay (multiplayer) I am a reactive player. I scout the enemy early to decide my tech path because the first five minutes make or break the game. First, pause and look at that timer, because that is your new best friend. A fast economy is everything; if you do not have 8 hogs and are not building tanks or hornets by the 5 minute mark, you will likely end up in a world of pain. Those blue boxes on the field matter significantly before the 5 minute mark, so pick them up with infantry, Covenant leaders, or hogs. Covenant leaders are no joke. Brute hotdrops can tear you up by the three minute mark. Characters level up with stars called veterancy through killing units or research. You always want to ensure you have upgrades when possible, but do not upgrade if you have no units on the field. Getting an army out takes TIME.
Time in Halo Wars makes or breaks everything.
Halo Wars is a tempo game. It rewards discipline. It punishes hesitation. It is not about micro-click spam. It is about production and pressure. You should have three Barracks, Depots, or Air Pads up at all times to reduce production time, with a unit queued in each. If you lose a tank, have three more take its place. Ensure you are multitasking by replacing dead units DURING a battle you are having elsewhere on the map. This IS NOT rock-paper-scissors once you are playing at a high level or against Legendary AI. It is a match of attrition—a game of "status," if you will. The person with the most stuff, pumping out the most stuff consistently, will win. My nine Scorpions will always take out your five tank killers (Cobras). - Presentation It may be more "casual" than StarCraft, but the music and sound design are perfect. It FEELS like Halo. If you love the classic trilogy’s "mystical" vibe, this lands hard. This game was made for Halo players. - Campaign Unique missions that never feel repetitive. The characters are a bit flat, but the gameplay makes up for it. Once you have cleared it on Legendary a few times, you have seen what it has to offer. The real longevity is in the multiplayer. Final verdict? My personal fun factor is high—high enough to reach the highest rank during my teenage Xbox Live years. It is a Halo game, not an FPS, but the presentation is there. If you are a new player, watch tutorials online and practice with the AI first.

14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 15: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

I loved the story, art work, the characters, ship battle, air & ground units. Today 4/15/2026 I completed Halo Wars on Legendary with all gold medals. Overall, an excellent game.
I'm a little biased, as this was my multiple thousand hour game as a child. Spent many years grinding to General in MP. If you can look past the clunky gameplay and AI, this is easily the best console-based RTS. An addicting campaign with challenge, very competitive mutliplayer and enjoyable co-op experience. Please, Halo Wars 2 really needs a steam release as well.
Halo Wars is one of those rare strategy games that stays with you long after you stop playing. It’s not just another RTS—it’s a game I grew up with. I spent hundreds of hours playing it on Xbox 360, and even today it still holds a special place for me. What makes Halo Wars stand out is its simplicity combined with surprising depth. At first glance, the game feels very straightforward, with intuitive controls and easy-to-understand mechanics. But once you dive deeper, you discover a wide range of strategic possibilities—from base building and resource management to unit composition and battlefield tactics. This balance makes the game enjoyable for both newcomers and experienced players. The gameplay has aged incredibly well, and it feels just as good today—especially on devices like the Steam Deck, where everything runs smoothly and naturally. It’s a great example of how a well-designed strategy game can remain fun and accessible years after release. Another major highlight is the soundtrack. The music is absolutely fantastic and adds a strong atmosphere to the game. Whether you’re in the middle of a battle or preparing your base, the soundtrack enhances every moment and perfectly fits the Halo universe. Overall, Halo Wars is a masterpiece. It proves that a strategy game doesn’t need to be overly complicated to be engaging and memorable. With its polished gameplay, strong atmosphere, and lasting appeal, it easily stands among the best strategy and base-building games available. 10/10, still one of the best RTS games I've ever played.
I never was good at this game on the Xbox 360, but I love reliving my childhood memories right now! Such a classic game; I miss the boys and I playing this :(
Incredibly fun and faithful Halo RTS game.
Originally released on Xbox 360 in 2009, this is the one and only TRUE HALO WARS game. I spent many hours playing this back in the day, even counted down the days for its release and got the limited "Collector's Edition." As a huge fan of Halo and RTS games this game was a dream come true. I recommend playing with an Xbox controller as the game was built from the ground up for Xbox 360, so in my opinion, Xbox controller feels best over M&K controls. Bungie was against any spin-offs of Halo, but Microsoft forced this game into production and chose Ensemble Studios, the creators of the Age of Empires series, to handle development. Ensemble was not simply tasked with the weight of making a good game, but also respecting Bungie's vision for Halo and creating a faithful adaption of the beloved sci-fi shooter into an RTS and I'd say they more than succeeded in my eyes. Everything from the art, set pieces, locations, characters, music, user interface, unit designs, even down to the unit voice lines and weapon sound effects, all of it FEELS Halo. Halo as a game series already has so much depth and variety with factions, guns, vehicles, and lore that there's tons of ideas to pull from and work with and translating it all into an RTS works so perfectly. Commanding marine squads, dropping ODSTs, using Elephants as mobile bases, ordering MAC blasts, upgrading units like Warthogs into Gauss variants, hearing the Scorpion's tank motor and treads as it rolls across the battlefield. Playing as Covenant units like Ghosts, Wraiths, and Banshees and being able to commence glassing as the Prophet. Even the newly created units for this game such as the Grizzlies, Wolverines, Cobras, Vampires, etc. feel like vehicles that could exist within Bungie's Halo lore. The whole game is so authentic to the Halo universe with an intriguing and grounded story line and characters that mesh well into the classic Halo games as a stand-alone prequel story. Sadly, Halo Wars was Ensemble's last game, but they did a fantastic job of adapting the FPS classic Halo into an RTS. My only wish would've been if Ensemble could've made their own Halo Wars 2 back during the Bungie era, with more units and content and maybe even using some of the new material from Halo Reach such as Falcons. Literally anything would've been better than 343's goofy Halo Wars 2, which looks and feels like a generic sci-fi RTS with very little "Halo" to it... what a complete joke.
I got this on sale for about $5, and it was totally worth it. Glad I waited this long to grab it. it’s a solid RTS set in the Halo universe. Simple, satisfying gameplay: build your base, send your army to crush targets, and enjoy the story running in the background. I just hope they release Halo Wars 2 on Steam at some point.
Game from my childhood, I remember back in 2010 my parents struggled to get me off the game. Really nostalgic, Still gives me the best vibes, One of the best halo games In my opinion.
It is such a shame, that M$ decided against releasing HW2 on Steam. In a day where even the first game in a highly expected series can arrive unplayable, with horrible reviews, HW2 was one of the rare sequels that at least equaled the original, and in the minds of many, it actually surpassed it. In light of this, and knowing that it would literally sell millions of copies on Steam, M$ has again decided against giving their players what they want, and likely destroyed this incredible franchise in the process. Halo Wars is the RTS that got me into RTS games. I have played video games since they first started showing up at the local movie theater, in the 1970s, so I have been aware of RTS games since the genre started, just never got into them. Halo Wars changed all of that, it brought RTS to those of us who were intimidated by the complexities of the genre, and yet still has enough depth and complexity, to even be challenging to seasoned veterans. Since I beat Halo Wars the first time, I have purchased countless RTS games, it has become my favorite genre. I am still not good enough to compete with the upper echelon, but I can still have a blast playing with my friends. HW2 has all of that and more! Yet, M$ continues to deny the opportunities so many others were given, to get into these games, with a familiar story, and enjoy playing them with their friends. A terrible decision, for both the gaming community, as well as from a business perspective. However, as Microsoft has pulled back their mask, in recent years, I really don't believe any of us are surprised.
Classic. Brings back a time of the pungent smell of axe body spray and long nights playing friends fueled by Surge soda. Both of which are probably now banned by the FDA.
