Hot garbage. I could write a lengthy review going into the details of what makes this game a horrible experience for any SAO fan, but I wouldn't say anything others haven't said before me. I even doubt that the devs, or whoever designed this game, have ever touched a single MMORPG, much less read or seen a full season of SAO. Steaming hot garbage. That being said.. If you don't know what SAO or an MMORPG is, but you like JRPGs, buy this when it's on sale. You're the only one who can be pleasantly surprised, and I envy you for that.
Y'all ever seen that clip of Iggy Azalea rapping on the radio and some dude calls in, tells her it's trash and to get off the air waves? That's how I feel about Echoes of Aincrad. Game has four enemy types. Boars, Wolves, Kangaroos and the navigation. Maybe 5 if you count the stupid out of bounds area markers. Solid $30 game but for $110 to get everything you'd be better off helping the USA debt relief program on Venmo and I'm obviously joking but this game sucks so bad.

14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 1: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.
Open World? Ah...
Do not buy this game! At least not if you are buying it based an the preview and information findable before lauch.. In the most positive way they had to cut and adjust promised stuff because of somethinf ourside of their own fault but neglected to update the public. If a more negative way it is a case of we have a great game concept with an allready populair name.. So frick all we sell it like this. Sadly the tutorial is on its own a minim of 4 hours and that is trained speedruner speed. Meaning by the time you figured out you did not get the game you thought you paid for you will not be alligable for a refund (and I do think that is on purpous so even when called out money will not have to be returned) Even when explaining the situation around it (in my case I preordered the game so I did not have reviews to go by) steam refers back to the 2 hour rule and is like: tough ♥♥♥♥. So this game is a cheap money grab extreemly expesive for what it actualy is as an game. It lives of the name and makes sure that playera can't get a refund by making an turorial that on it's own is almost 1/3 th of the game. Yes the game is about 30 to 50 hours long. depending on your playstyle but you pay the same or more as for games with 200 hours of game time. So spend your money wisely and avoid this debacle of a game
That this game has worse reviews than Fatal Bullet and other SAO games is crazy. Anyway, let me destill my in-depth impression for even the shortest of attention spans.
Story
Pretty awesome: Once again the most interesting aspect of this game adaptation. And this time with high-quality English voice acting throughout all conversations, excellent animation on top, and great characters. I have yet to see the story fully unfold, but the mix of key events from SAO with a very own twist and new protagonists is nice. I am also into the actual Aincrad lore we get that is fully missing in the anime. But definitely disappointing that our own character is silent and not contributing.
Gameplay
Good aspects, bad aspects: First of all the combat itself is great. Very challenging Souls-like ARPG battles with sufficient depth. You really feel the thrill of the merciless death game playing on Very Hard here and there (even without perma death mode) along with the general SAO atmosphere. Just aspects like character attributes and specialization are lacking, and more importantly: It becomes a tiring walking simulator quickly. All the running around through the complex routes of the (not so) open world with its limited freedom, barely any collectibles and activities and basically no events... It's just the repetitive fights, and so many of them, which even exciting combat can't make a great experience. No multiplayer content is really unusual and disappointing for an SAO game, too.
Graphics & Audio
Great art direction: The vast landscapes of the few Aincrad floors in the modern, realistic look are really something. Maybe outside of the cities, you get tired of what you see from all the running from A to B for another quest, but the hub areas of this game are so beautiful and detailed. The dungeons look and feel sick as well. The BGM and sound design add to conveying the atmosphere in a great way. Definitely an experience for Aincrad fans. The sequences during the story are well made, as the game has overall outstanding animation, but I experienced some issues such as load-ins and out-of-sync audio caused by delayed loading. Also some freezes occurring especially during enemy attacks are not pleasant.
Conclusion
At least it's peak in some regard: It may disappoint for plenty of reasons, such as it only including a tiny fraction of the world Aincrad, but among all SAO game adaptation we have had, Echoes of Aincrad may still deserve to be called the single-best entry. The thing is, the bar is somewhat low and maybe you prefer one of the titles offering a multiplayer experience which this game is lacking. The overall gameplay loop is rather shallow and not staying very fun throughout the whole game. More of the detail and budget went into the plot, visuals and atmosphere. However, the combat itself may really be also the best one in all of the SAO games. So if you are a JRPG / Souls-like fan, you may like this one. For big SAO fans, it's undoubtedly good. But you may have to focus on the positive and ignore annoying stuff, such as Denuvo anti-piracy software being included. Because you clearly notice it also includes a lot of love and hard work from the dev team. Further notes: Don't expect it to be very playable without a controller. Create your character with care, you can't edit it again. Don't go straight into Death Game Mode (if available), it gets insane enough without it.

For a $70 game, I expected a lot more than this. I honently wouldn't mind a $70-90 price tag at all if the game were actually good Let's start with the character models. NPCs look worse than a gacha game from 2020. Why doesn't the face skin tone even match the rest of the body? Then there's the mute MC. It's 2026, and this game still ships with a silent protagonist whose entire "acting" during dialogue is just shaking or nodding their head at dialogue options, even watching a friend die gets the same non-reaction, like it's just another Tuesday night. Character customization isn't much better. Eyebrows sit too high? There's no slider for that. Eyes too big? You have to swap the entire eye preset just to change that. Want to play a tall, bulky character like Agil? All you get is a generic preset. Exploration follows the same pattern. It's a straight line with a chest waiting 5 seconds down the one and only path. That's the whole loop, walk down a set path. See a shortcut below you? Doesn't matter, your character is apparently built like a toddler and dies from any fall over 4 meters. The running and parkour animations don't help either, jump up a rock and your character randomly breaks into a parkour roll because why not, and on terrain with uneven rock heights it basically never stops rolling. For a game that's supposed to encourage exploration, the loot in these chests is just basic, boring consumables. Even the potions are capped at 5 per tier, which is just stupid considering the anime showed characters carrying tens of potion. Want a rare material to craft an interesting weapon? Doesn't exist. Want to explore for a unique armor or weapon? Doesn't exist either. Most "POIs" are just random ruins with no storytelling or encounters, the kind of thing you walk past in 5 minutes and forget about it. Other player encounters while exploring? Nope, you're apparently the only person exploring Aincrad. Hoping for a secret dungeon or boss? Instead you get another ten minutes of walking down a straight path. Every dungeon and labyrinth is copy-pasted and looks identical, and you can't even leave the city without a quest sending you out first. Now the enemy variety. I get that it's only floor 1 and 2, so there shouldn't be a huge roster yet, but the bosses could at least try. Most area and dungeon bosses are just a bigger version of the base monster with the same attack pattern. New boss zone? Here's another boar variant. New zone in general? Another boar variant. Tired of boars yet? Here's a bigger boar. The progression also feels counterintuitive. You're supposed to feel stronger as you level up, but enemies in this world scale their level to match yours. If you're playing death mode, naturally some of the stat growth from leveling has to go into HP instead of damage, while the enemies just keep getting more HP as their level rises. The end result is that you actually feel like you're doing less damage the more you level up. Smaller nitpick, but the Col economy doesn't match the novels or anime either. Col is supposed to be scarce on the early floors, a boar dropping somewhere between a single to double-digit range in the source material. In this game a single boar drops 600 Col, to the point where you could basically buy Asuna's house on the upper floor while still being in floor 2. It's a minor thing, but it's the kind of detail that breaks the immersion if you're a fan of the source material. And I haven't even gotten to the questionable design choices. The Town of Beginnings, supposedly the biggest city in all of Aincrad, has three explorable streets. No bond or relationship system. No guilds. No home customization. No parrying enemies with sword skills. No rare enemy. No secret quests, dungeons, or bosses. No buying information. No buying weapons. No player blacksmith to commission a custom weapon. You can't even change your weapon without going back to the storage chest. And why is there no spear as a weapon option in the first place? The only genuinely good things here are the environment art, which does look nice, the sound effects, which are solid, and the combat, which is good enough that it wouldn't bother me at all if everything else about the game held up. It just doesn't. I really, really tried to give this game a chance and tried to like it, but its just hard to. What makes me the most mad isn't that the game is mid, it's the wasted opportunity. We probably won't be getting another Aincrad game anytime soon after this aside from the expansion.
