The closest thing I can compare this to would be like watching Journey 2: the Mysterious Island (2012) and Journey to the Centre of the Earth (2008) back-to-back roughly 11 times with the Japanese dub AND 3D glasses. They even reference the 2012 movie by having the anime girl's chest bounce around - JUST like that scene with the Rock!

GRACIAS MARTIN
My first YS game I've played to completion and was pleasantly surprised and couldn't put it down. I've tried many times to get into the series but the hack n slash aspect got boring for me after a while even trying 8, here a few times. This time it finally clicked and it was very worth it. Very much worth your time. The combat is addicting and satisfying. Not the prettiest game to look at but makes up for it with an excellent story and cast of characters. Fun exploration on a massive island AND you can fish.. AND there is a Shoebill.
They said this game was a good starting point if you haven't played any of the Ys series. They were right.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana was my first foray into this long-running series, and it completely blew me away. It instantly transported me back to my youth, evoking the same sense of wonder I had playing classic JRPGs on the PS2 and PS3. It has that special magic that so many modern games seem to be missing. The incredible soundtrack, the compelling mystery of the Isle of Seiren, and a cast of characters I genuinely grew to care about all combine to create a truly memorable adventure. Even though I had no prior history with the series, it gave me a powerful sense of nostalgia for what makes this genre so great. This game didn't just tell me a story; it made me a fan. I can't recommend it enough.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is an action RPG centered on exploration, rapid combat, and a strong character-driven narrative. It follows Adol Christin after he is stranded on the mysterious Isle of Seiren, a location filled with ancient ruins, dangerous wildlife, and an unfolding mystery tied to visions of a girl named Dana. The game maintains a brisk pace, balancing storytelling with continuous discovery across a large interconnected world. The plot combines survival themes with high-fantasy elements. Early hours focus on gathering castaways and building a functioning base, while later chapters expand into a deeper mythological narrative that links Adol’s present to Dana’s past. The dual-timeline structure is used to reveal world lore gradually, allowing the player to understand the island’s history through alternating perspectives. Combat is one of the game’s defining strengths. It uses fast, responsive real-time action with character-switching that encourages exploiting enemy weaknesses. Each playable hero has a unique weapon type and skill set, enabling strategic party composition. The Flash Guard and Flash Move mechanics reward precise timing, creating high-risk, high-reward windows for counterattacks and evasive maneuvers. Exploration is broad and layered. The island is divided into varied regions such as dense forests, coastal cliffs, ancient temples, and hidden caves. Movement skills, shortcuts, and new party abilities gradually open previously inaccessible zones, making backtracking meaningful rather than repetitive. Collecting materials and completing side requests enhances the sense of a living environment. Castaway Village functions as the central hub. It grows as survivors join the settlement, unlocking new services like crafting, cooking, and equipment upgrades. Defensive raid missions and rescue operations add variety to the structure, reinforcing the theme that progress on the island depends on community involvement rather than individual heroics alone. Dana’s storyline provides the game with emotional weight. Her segments introduce unique mechanics, different environments, and a distinct combat style that contrasts with Adol’s party-based approach. As her story converges with the main narrative, the game’s themes of loss, transformation, and responsibility take center stage, elevating the overall impact of the plot. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA succeeds through its energetic combat, expansive exploration, and character-focused storytelling. It offers a balanced mix of action and narrative, supported by strong music direction and consistent pacing. For players seeking an immersive and kinetic RPG experience, it stands as one of the most refined entries in the series.
