Fallout 3 hat für mich einen ganz besonderen Stellenwert. 2009 hat es mir den Spaß an Videospielen zurückgebracht, nachdem ich mir eine Xbox mit Halo 3 und GTA IV gekauft hatte – zwei Spiele, mit denen ich persönlich überhaupt nichts anfangen konnte. Erst Fallout 3 hat mich wieder stundenlang vor den Bildschirm gefesselt. Jetzt, viele Jahre später, habe ich das Spiel noch einmal auf dem Steam Deck gespielt. Abgesehen von den gelegentlichen Abstürzen funktioniert es immer noch erstaunlich gut und macht nach wie vor viel Spaß. Die Story ist allerdings nicht die größte Stärke des Spiels. Vieles ist sehr schwarz-weiß gezeichnet: Die Brotherhood of Steel übernimmt klar die Rolle der Guten, während die Enclave als eindeutige Bösewichte dargestellt wird. Dafür überzeugt der Gameplay-Loop aus Erkunden, Kämpfen, Leveln und Looten auch heute noch. Mein größtes Problem mit Fallout 3 ist allerdings die Existenz von Fallout: New Vegas. Dieses nimmt nahezu alles, was Fallout 3 gut macht, und entwickelt es noch einmal deutlich weiter. Dadurch fällt es schwer, Fallout 3 losgelöst von seinem Nachfolger zu bewerten. Besonders hervorheben möchte ich aber die DLCs. Sie gehören für mich bis heute zu den ersten Dingen, an die ich bei Fallout 3 denke. Jeder von ihnen fühlt sich anders an und bringt frische Ideen mit. Ob das völlig überdrehte Alien-Raumschiff in Mothership Zeta, das atmosphärische Point Lookout, das mich immer ein wenig an Texas Chainsaw Massacre erinnert, oder The Pitt, das mit seiner düsteren Industrieatmosphäre fast schon an Alien 3 erinnert – die Erweiterungen sorgen für jede Menge Abwechslung. Generell besitzt Fallout 3 eine ganz eigene Art von Horror. Vor allem dann, wenn man das Radio ausschaltet. Der grünliche Farbfilter, die verlassenen Ruinen, entfernte Schreie und vereinzelte Schüsse erschaffen eine bedrückende Atmosphäre, die nur wenige Open-World-Spiele so gut einfangen. Am Ende bleibt Fallout 3 für mich ein grundsolides Rollenspiel mit einer einzigartigen Stimmung. Wer Fallout: New Vegas bereits gespielt hat und Lust auf mehr in dieser Welt hat, kann hier bedenkenlos zugreifen. Wer beide Spiele noch nicht kennt, sollte meiner Meinung nach allerdings zuerst New Vegas spielen, da es das insgesamt rundere Gesamtpaket bietet.

good game! very immersive open world, bethesda really knew how to make em. when its age shows, it's mostly just funny, like zooming in on npc faces when they talk. my only real complaint is that i got so tired of going through abandoned subway tunnels that all look the same. i waited to do all the DLCs until I finished literally everything else, which I do think was a mistake; doing them around midgame would've been better since you can then y'know, actually have time to use the unique weapons and stuff. but yeah overall great experience, no performance issues or technical issues at all
I started the Fallout series on the New Vegas and after the following ones, I've decided to go back and play the 3. The age doesn't impact this amazing game! I wasn't ready for some bugs that you could only pass using the console and it was a first for me but most of the game is interesting and a good open world game in general!!!
