In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland. The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource.

Solo dev creates a genre defining game, sells over a million copies, disappears. This is the way.
I'm sorry, but I just cannot recommend this game, no matter how I look at it. I mean, it's not like it's inherently bad or anything like that, but beyond a solid foundation it's just incredibly shallow. After a few hours you've seen it all and done it all. None of the twists and turns (sudden house fires, crop field infestations, sickness, nomad arrivals) are particularly clever or designed to be anything more than minor annoyances if you know what you are doing - and once you have played around for 10 hours or so, you will know precisly what to do. No matter the difficulty settings, I start the game, place exactly 2 houses each year (which keeps the population super steady for maaaaaaany years), position my food gatherers in a way that they don't interfere with each other within the same category, then assign one worker each to a bunch of 10x10 or 11x11 crop fields ... and that's it basically. Then I just keep expanding with new settlements, repeating the same process over and over and over again. Of course, you have your other production sources on the side (wood, stone, iron, animals) that you keep tweaking depending on your needs, but there is nothing particularly exciting about this, just very basic city building management. You keep your population happy, healthy and educated (trust me, it really isn't deep at all), have a bunch of wells ready for house fires and you are set. If an infestation hits a crop field, you just insta delete it, set it up again and you are done. In case disease spreads out, you got a bunch of well placed hospitals and watch how things unfold (usually a couple of people die and that's it). Don't accept nomads. Perhaps more recent masterpieces like Timberborn spoiled me too much, but nothing in this game made me feel like I'm on a mission. It's not addictive, you barely discover anything new and all the depth that would allow you to pursue proper personal "projects" and achievements is completely missing. We've had better city building games before and after 2014 and will continue having them. This game is missing AT LEAST half the content you would expect from it. I've had it in my backlog for half an eternity and was actually excited to play it once I saw the number of reviews it has accumulated over the years and the review ratio. I assumed it'd be amazing by now, heavily updated, expanded and providing a content rich experience. Instead, there was apparently ... well ... nothing? From what I've just read, the modding community has done like 95% of the heavy lifting. But I'm reviewing the base game here not the mods. And in combination with that price point, I find the work that has been put into this game by the original creator, the lack of innovation, lack of depth and refusal to provide any meaningful updates, simply unsatisfactory.

Starts off great, but this thing is less of a city builder than a CONSTANT worker allocation game. Coming from Timberborn or Manor Lords, this game has only about a fraction of the options those games have and less of a reason to keep playing. After you've built the ~15 buildings there are, there's really nothing left to do except make more of them and continuously move workers around so you can build. Then it's just a matter of hitting x10 speed and waiting and waiting for things to get built or hoping a trader comes by with something good you need. This game needs some serious updates or lots of mods to really flourish. I didn't hate it, but after 10 hours, I'm bored.
I have been playing this game for 10 years. It still challenges me and the mods all infinite variety. Great game 10/10
Incredibly entertaining and immersive, the graphics style aged very well, the music is enchanting...no wonder this is a genre defining legend! Your typical "How is it 4AM already?" game, my first 14 hours played was in one sitting and I skipped sleep altogether. Wanted to write some more but my village needs me..
I've been playing Banished for years. Don’t let my listed hours fool you, I’ve got hundreds more that aren’t logged. What keeps this game alive for me is the modding community. The amount of content out there and the possibilities it unlocks are insane. I only wish the developer had made a sequel or updated it to bring it into the 2020s with modern optimization. Even so, Banished remains one of the most satisfying city-builder/survival hybrids out there. If you want a challenging, rewarding, and surprisingly deep game, it’s absolutely worth playing, even in 2025.
This game is digital crack. I thought I was going to bed at a reasonable hour last night only to discover it was already 2:00 am so I just wanted to wrap up what I was doing only to realize it was suddenly 3:00 am. Someone suggest a support group because I'm obviously an addict!
Great city building / survival game - Just make sure you also download Colonial Charter mod, which is basically like huge free dlc for it.
Gameplay: 1. Build a fishing dock 2. Expand Storage 3. Make Gatherers Hut. 4. Winter came 5. All civilians died without houses 6. Start a new game 7. Make the same mistakes 8. Civilians died from starvation. 9. Start a new game 10. Quit the game. Absolutely worth the money if you do the right steps to survive with more than 100 people.
