If I had a nickel for every Radiant Golden Bass I caught within the span of 190 hours I would have ONE NICKEL.

It is a wonderful fishing game, it's rare finding appropriate people in lobbies these days, I hope one day it can be updated again like it used to be, I miss it quite
i hate this game
I got this with a group of friends and spent my time talking about life while fishing and listening to the music. This is a really good game to play if you want to have something to do that isn't focus intense or mentally taxing. It's a cute artstyle, has some funny moments if you catch something really large and a friend sees it, and is a good way to spend some time with the people you care about.
I was prepared to leave a positive review for WEBFISHING even before I heard about what happened to the developer. It's been a cute game to drop into now and then, and I've had good luck finding servers with polite, chill people hanging out. Is it a deep experience? Nah. But it's one of the few chatroom-based games where I haven't personally been overwhelmed by spam and negativity. When I join a new server, I get that momentarily shy feeling of being the new kid in class all over again. That makes it even more delightful when another kitty plops down next to you to fish together. How many decades has it been since the Internet felt that wholesome? But I am aware that my experience is NOT always the case, especially since bigoted griefers tried to exploit the effective lack of moderation, and the dev mostly left the Internet in 2024 after being harassed, hacked, and doxxed. (IIRC that all took place within one month of the game's release--it massively took off in popularity and bad faith concern trolls moved in swiftly, taking advantage of the vulnerability of a solo dev to wage a targeted hate campaign.) So, where do things stand now? It feels inaccurate to call WEBFISHING true abandonware--there have been small patches, most recently in Jan 2025. As of today (August 1, 2026), the game is still very playable and I once again found another chill public server to hang out in. But it also feels true to say that you shouldn't count on there being strong moderation guardrails to get things back on track if they go sideways in a public server. Especially if the host is not responsive about kicking or banning disruptive elements. Then it's up to you to mute and block (which thankfully, you have the tools to do--although it's up to you to find them in the Player tab of your Backpack). That leaves WEBFISHING in an unusual niche--it has given me a lot of simple, wholesome moments that feel friendly for all ages, but at its core it feels fundamentally designed for adults. There's beer and wine in the vending machine, cigarettes as wearable decor, and (optional) buyable sexuality titles if you'd like to declare yours. None of those things are negatives for me, but it's important for parents not to see the cutesy Animal Crossing like graphics and assume it's a game for kids. As far as design choices, they're hit or miss: - Positives: It's nice to be able to customize your character a lot right off the bat without having to painstakingly buy EVERY color or pattern variation. You also don't have to be a cat, there's a dog option too. And then there are a good amount of things to buy at the Hub once you start catching and selling fish: everything from cosmetic items, to fishing upgrades, to sidewalk chalk and musical instruments. There are also little quests at the notice board for catching different kinds of fish, and you can fish up treasure chests sometimes. It's still not a deep game, but there are things to do even if you're in a quieter server with no one chatting. And maybe even a couple secrets... ;) - On the negative side: There's only one map (which gets a bit boring), and the fishing mechanics themselves are not well-explained. I spent over an hour reeling in fish incorrectly and not understanding why so many were getting away. The on-screen cues tell you to MASH! (repeatedly left-click) or HOLD! (hold left-click down), but it fails to explain that the mashing part is not a whole section, it's more like a "gate" to break through to the next HOLD section. Meaning, you don't have to endlessly click, and you can still play this game without getting carpal tunnel. But the numbers shown by the MASH! lines don't seem to correlate to the actual number of times you must click to get through them. So, while I know I am catching fish much more successfully now, I can't explain exactly why. You should also be careful about perceived anonymity in public servers, because your Steam username will be your display name, and other players can click through directly from the game to your Steam profile, read comments on your profile if it's not private, etc. Meaning, if someone joined a server with bad intentions and decided to target you, make sure that what they can glean doesn't lead to any personally identifiable information. Again, I haven't had any problems, but it's good to be mindful. WEBFISHING is basically a relic from another, simpler time that somehow ended up in a world filled with 4chan losers who cannot allow anyone else to feel joy without wanting to destroy it. It was always going to be a fragile ecosystem, but the game actually feels like it's thriving in a more comfortable way now that the spotlight has moved away from it. Ironically, being declared a "dead" game might be the best thing that ever happened to WEBFISHING. The griefers lost interest, the hype train rolled on by, and what has been left behind in their wake are some folks who want to play a cute little game and maybe chat with friends. If you can, spend the 5 bucks and then pass a few minutes as cat (or dog) relaxing with your fishing pole and maybe some friends. For me, it's been worth it.
