The campaign is just overly hard and tedious. There's no way that even a seasoned rts player is not going to drop missions even on easy difficulties, likely softlocking progress and requiring restarting the game. Once you know the missions and what works it becomes easy to replay and win (not unusual for scripted rts missions, but there's not much else on offer here, but this snowballs against you for mission rewards making it harder in the future. Campaign is all over the place. Some parts are insanely easy, others not. Very easy to softlock your progress and have to start the campaign (yes the whole campaign not just the mission) over. Missions go from 0-100 at the end with no real sense if you are just wasting your time. You would normally think that zombie holdouts would be fun but somehow it is not.
The game uses directional sound for the zombies, but it is always the wrong direction. I can't get the game to full screen properly without borderless windowed mode, and on a two screen monitor setup that means I can't pan right without using the arrow keys. The campaign uses the worst designed meta tech trees I have ever experienced. There is not nearly enough unit or building verity in the game to lock things behind campaign progression, so you end up having to slog through ten or so multi hour missions with only two troop(realistically one) and no building choices. The tech tree is also non refundable and too many of the options are mandatory if you want a chance of progressing the campaign so making the mistake of wasting tech point to try a new troop or building type, means you will have to restart the entire campaign.
An addictive zombie slaughterfest game. The mix of solo missions and base-building is fantastic. The whole presentation is just flawless!
Setting and aesthetic of the game is great, but softlocking yourself with the research tree and wasting all the time you put into a campaign run feels awful.
What the hell were they thinking when they designed the campaign?
As a player who has played HOURS of this game, do not buy! I loved this game when I first played it. I excused the blemishes to just enjoy the overall game but revisiting it I have to give this game a negative review, Long short is it's just not fun. There's a very very delicate balance of fun and challenging but this is just tedious. Mindless upkeep of positioning soldiers while waiting on resources that are waiting on colonists which are waiting on food, etc. Its tedious. There's no better word I can describe a game which makes the second level feel like a literal chore. I feel like Im completing chores instead of missions which means the developers failed. I'm sorry. I played hours and enjoyed some of it but I cannot recommend. Hard pass!
really cool concept and fun gameplay ruined by the fact that one mistake will destroy your base and force you to play the last hour of micro managing just to try again. no way to turn off Iron man mode. DO NOT BUY IF CASUAL PAYER/
