I enjoyed many other entries in the Tales series. But this one? Not really. Children as protagonists never convinced me and in this case they seem even more annoying. Add a plot that is simple and sometimes doesn't make much sense and the result is that I feel barely invested. But my biggest gripe are an outdated UI, mostly poor AI for the teammates, and a combat system that is not entertaining in the best case. And in cases where you battle all alone tends to be piss poor. The skill system is just annoying and barely enriching the experience. Unlocking them? Trivial stuff, no depth. The few skills that are noteworthy require you to test them by playing the character yourself. Just for you to then see that the AI fails to properly use the setup you created. Yay! What frustrates me most is the terrible design in general though. Example: Your team has a long scene happening in a room, which they leave in that scene. If you don't double check, you'll miss the only save point anywhere close by. After a challenging boss battle. And there is nothing else in that room, just the save point for you to miss. Wtf? And there is much more random and seemingly meaningless stuff that you can miss, if you don't follow a guide, just for it to turn out to be pretty relevant later. It also frequently happens that there are tons of scenes between a last save point and a challenging battle. And while scenes are skippable, sketches are not. I could provide more examples for poor design but I'll rest my case and move on to better games. 62/100

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

They managed to release a worse game than Symphonia in almost every single sense years later! Wow! There's a lot to say just on combat gameplay, though, so I'll focus on that here. You start out the game with one character available, which just so happens to be perhaps the most useless mfing protagonist in the entire series. I introduce you to Mr. Swirl-Sword-Lots Lowell that always suffers from an awful case of huge vulnerability windows after every single attack thanks to unnecessary, asinine end-lag animations. Poor man can swing his sword a couple times, eat whatever sharp stick the enemy swings back at his face right afterwards and hardly do anything else. Soon after, you're pitched against your first boss, who is practically a ninja by comparison (bosses here are never playing the same game as you) and will shove how much of a worthless tank your character feels to control on your face right away. And for Tales veterans, I HOPE TO ♥♥♥♥ you didn't let your experience with the series get to your head and switch to hard mode right away because it almost TRIPLES enemies' health amount and turns said first boss into a nigh insurmountable barrier to overcome (if not through difficulty, then through the sheer tedium of getting that number down to 0 that early in the game). For comparison: Zagi 1 on hard mode has 11250 HP, from 4500 on normal. Vidarr, the first boss in Symphonia, meanwhile, has 6000 on hard mode, from 4000 on normal. AND you have 3 more party members available for that fight. AND Lloyd doesn't control like a dementia patient who suddenly forgets he's in the middle of a fight and decides to juggle his sword for 5 seconds for his own amusement. All in all, amazing difficulty balancing there. Made me outright refund the first time I tried it and I only went back to it after a generous friend gifted me the game after I told him I'd only give it a chance again for free. Besides the abysmal start, the rest of the combat system doesn't fare much better. It's restrictive as hell. A lot of mechanics you'd take for granted in earlier games are locked behind skills you have to grind for and equip to unlock. Wanna use an item with a character on a different party member? It's a skill. Wanna (♥♥♥♥♥♥) backsteps? It's a skill. Wanna chain 3 artes in a combo string? It's many skills! And I hope you have enough points to ♥♥♥♥♥♥ the combat, because you can't equip those for free! Oh but before that you gotta remember that an entire category of artes is also hidden behind skills that changes certain artes you already know and you have use these altered artes enough times to actually learn them without needing the skill. It's not needlessly convoluted, you just don't get it! One hilarious thing is that you can actually cancel the end-lag animations on attacks, but it requires 3 (THREE) different simultaneous inputs every time like ????????? Who designed this ♥♥♥♥??? (and cancelling still feels much slower than it should be. most of the time I don't even bother.) Less hilarious, though, is that the game makes little to no effort to actually tutorialize you on that or other nuances of the battle system. Anything relevant gets put into the "Battle Book", which is just a lazy list shoved in an option under an option on a menu. No practice mode or spots whatsoever. Aerial enemies are a disaster to deal with, especially during the first half or so of the game. The vast majority of your party is very poorly equipped to handle them, and some of the flying boss enemies you encounter are only even barely tolerable thanks to your spellcasters. Anti-air melee options are either only unlocked later in the game (Tiger Blade) or entirely absent (Tempest). Guess what artes are also available very early in other games? Lastly, there is Overlimits. It's the most interesting part of the combat, which in this context merely means it's a two-steps-forward-two-steps-back kind of deal. It's an effect that gets enemies off you and lets you chain attacks without stopping for while. Cool! It's a good way to turn the tides on a difficult encounter by tanking through enemy blows and unloading— Wait no, you can't tank attacks anymore. In fact, you can easily get staggered through the entire duration of the effect, as it only lasts very few seconds. B-but the payoff of unleashing a super cool Burst Arte at the end of an OL chain makes up for it, right? It's super strong and you'll be unstoppable once— You can just as easily get staggered in the middle of a Burst Arte animation. It's perhaps the strongest feeling of cockblock I've ever had in this series, and it'll happen to you several times. The BAs aren't even very strong anyway. It's all right, though! You can get hyper armor for them! THAT'S A SKILL AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Definitely a fun game, but it has some major weak spots, and I really don't understand why so many people claim this is the best in the series. Most characters were really good, combat pretty fun, ending was unsatisfying. (7/10)
Glad to have a protagonist that isn't a pacifist while mowing down hundreds of NPCs. Has enjoyable characters and an adequate story.
A lot of people say this game has an awful story that meanders and then isn't present, I have no idea what they're talking about, as the story is the only really good part of the game. The synthesis and skill systems are horrible, the combat is mediocre to awful. It's a guide-bait game for all of the stupid particulars, where things exist, how to progress things, the existence of missable quests, the existence of failable quests, literally none of it is tracked anywhere, there are no hints, it's just good luck, idiot. Hope you like visiting towns just to talk to everyone to see if there's a quest active. Oh, wait, you forgot to sleep in every inn? Too bad, you missed something. There are quests that wont even tell you that there ARE requirements to complete, let alone hint at how to complete them. You can even see the complete failure in level design, presenting a fast travel system in a dungeon that just does not work, and then put it right next to a save point, and it still not work, so you think that you missed something in the dungeon and waste time trying to figure out what you missed, but then it turns out you have to go into the NEXT ROOM where the fast travel system also exists, and then it just starts working if you interact with it. Even has this really cool bug where controller confirm input, and literally only that input, will stop working, unless you restart your entire computer. Don't listen to anyone that recommends this game for "exploration", not about this game, not about anything. Not even the party comp is good, you get one single good healer (the other one can only do it in melee, and if you tell the AI to heal, it'll use up all it's TP 10x faster than anyone else in the game), and then, at some point, they take that healer away from you for a stint. And it's just awful. It's so awful. The protagonist is almost good enough to subvert all these issues, so if you can stomach this atrocity, it's worth it for the narrative, but it has no reason to be 60 hours long, none.
I LOVE THIS GAME. This is was my first Tale series game I've played and fell in love on the Xbox360. it has some noticeable issues but the goods was so good that it stopped mattering to me
[/olist]
[/olist]
Peak JRPG. I played through this game extensively back in my Xbox 360 days, but recently had the urge to do another quick playthrough on Steam. I thought I would just blast through the main story (and for the most part that is what I did), but I was surprised how much I was drawn to doing the side content. It’s just a testament to how good of a game Vesperia is. It’s full of terrific characters, a deeply complex battle system (that I am still not very good at), and an adventurous story full of twists and turns. But perhaps most importantly: to me the aesthetic of this game is timeless. It still looks so good with such a beautiful and colourful artstyle. The characters, environments, enemies - everything still looks so incredible, even playing this in 2025.
