I'm the type of person who thinks about Versus 13 more than my own parents. It's kind of nuts to think about how much a game that doesn't exist has influenced gamers as a whole, to the point where whole games are coming out now posing as spiritual sucessors to the idea. Reynatis doesn't quite fill the hole in my heart left by Nomura all those years ago, but I get it, I see the vision, and I've never felt this close to someone I've never met before. The game itself is a low budget affair, headed by a novice programmer, and it shows with nearly every facet of the game. Combat is functional, but lacks too much in the weight and variety department to call it anything more than that. Even with new skills being unlocked the loop ultimately doesn't change, and the way dodging is handled makes the overall experience far too easy to make any kind of enemy or boss encounter interesting. The Shibuya overworld is excellently crafted, full of detail in the largest and smallest of areas. Certain scenarios increase your stress meter, which you can lower by getting drinks at vending machines. Restaurauts across the map all have their own inventory with dine in and to go options, and obtaining and upgrading skills is handled by finding magical graffiti, which becomes more frequent as the population's trust in you increases. Things take a dip once you leave for the game's dungeons, however. Initially, the forest atmosphere is a nice change of pace, but the same exact set of assets gets old extremely fast, and it's fairly easy to get lost in the long, identical corridors full of respawning enemies. One aspect I like about this game without as much reservation is the narrative and writing. You'll be strung along to the very end of it, with enough mysteries being solved to keep you satisfied while introducing just enough intrigue to keep you moving. Each party member is well defined and likeable, even though some have much more story focus than others. Unfortunately the budget rears its head once again in the cutscene quality, as many scenes contain fades to black to avoid needing to animate them, and the blocking/business aspect is basically nonexistant. I guess what I'm getting at is that It's a fine game, fine enough for me to 100% complete at the very least. Really, the draw for this title is its style, and its connections to the White Whale that is Versus 13. Some of Yoko's best work can be found in the soundtrack, the eternal night of Shibuya is just wonderful to be in, and the whole experience feels deeply personal and charming despite its shortcomings. You'll know if you'll like this game based on the premise alone, but don't go expecting the experience you've always wanted. -Spoilers for REYNATIS below- One last extremely bizarre thing I wanted to mention is this game's post launch chapters. The initial ending for the game sticks the landing narratively for me but leaves a pretty big unanswered question in the form of the Consul, and their plans for Shibuya. Rather than wrapping that up neatly, REYNATIS decided to balls-out go for the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ throat by killing off every single supporting character in the streets like dogs supposedly as an attempt to set up a sequel. I can't imagine this game sold super well, seeing as I'm the 68th person to ever review this game on Steam, and I can't imagine the developer didn't know that seeing as the content came out months after the initial launch. The game got future free DLC chapters, but were all part of a completely unrelated dream-based paralogue and the whole "everyone's dead" thing went completely unresolved as post launch content ended months ago. I extremely extremely desperately want to know what's going through this guy's head, and if anyone anywhere is out there with a grasp on Japanese and access to this dude, let me know ASAP.

I want to love Reynatis, I do, but its cons outweigh its pros which makes it hard for me to justify a purchase at full price. While it isn't outright bad by any means, it's just... kinda boring. If I could leave a neutral review, I would as for me this game is just average at best. My thoughts: Reynatis is a game that oozes potential in both its combat system and story, but falls short of the mark for both. The gameplay quickly becomes repetitive, boring, and, at times, frustrating. The story is somehow both simple and confusing at the same time. It leaves numerous plot holes and leaves so much unexplained. The one good thing that I, and many other people who have either played or reviewed this game, can attest to is the soundtrack. Yoko Shimomura is, and continues to be, amazing at her craft and it really shows through the game's music. Unfortunately, that isn't anywhere near enough to save this game as a whole. For a whole $60 there are definitely better JRPG experiences out there. Reynatis felt like I was playing a proof-of-concept, and I really hope that the devs pick this game back up and refine it for a future installment as it had such potential. If you played the demo and liked what you saw, go for it and pick it up. For how long I played it for, it was a decent way to kill time as a filler game. I'd recommend waiting for a sale if you're interested enough to try it out. Gameplay It's a basic hack-n'-slash game with some skills to use mixed in. There's a dodge system that you can only use when not "powered up" in your wizard form. The combat becomes much more developed once you start getting more skills to use and party members to switch between, but other than that there's no further depth. Outside of combat, there's an odd GTA-style wanted system where if you walk around the city while showing your powers, you get a wanted meter that steadily climbs up. Once it hits 100%, you're thrown into a fight with the authorities that you're pretty much forced to lose. However, you don't lose anything for losing this fight, and when you hit the retry button you're just placed wherever you were when you got thrown into the fight making the whole fiasco just a time waster. You can also just clear the wanted meter by going into any load zone making it even more of a time waste. Story The main cast is fun, quirky, just very anime-esque. The story is very straightforward and does a good job of explaining the basics of what's happening and world building. However, in the last few acts of the game (especially in the last act), there are a lot of things that don't really make sense or just aren't ever explained properly. It leaves a lot of questions left unanswered and by the end I didn't really feel satisfied with how the end played out. Graphics I usually don't care about how a game looks, but for something that came out fairly recently, this game looks rough. Some things look like they came out during the PS2-era while other things, namely the main cast, are much more refined. It's a bit jarring when you look at it, but not the biggest dealbreaker. Verdict Play the demo first and see if the combat and story are your thing. If it is, then cool, pick it up. Otherwise I'd highly recommend waiting for it to go on sale.
I liked the game, and I hate the post game story, seriously that was stupid and had a weird cliffhanger for a game that will most probably never get a sequel. What the heck
Far to generic for what it's attempting. Aiming for the Versus mystique while misunderstanding Nomura's vision. A shame to waste good Yoko music on this. Hope they try again with something more original and higher quality.
Combat is clunky and slow, there is no real customization in terms of equips, and overall there is no difficulty to this game. Like at all. It's very shallow in all degrees.
