I started playing Red Orchestra 2 before I even had a Steam account, so I’ve been playing it for around ten years now.
Old-timer!
To me, it remains the benchmark for World War II shooters. Even though the graphics are obviously quite dated by today’s standards, the gameplay and pacing were remarkably distinctive for their time. It doesn’t try to make shooting feel constantly exciting or flashy. Instead, it puts a lot of effort into recreating the experience of actually being on a battlefield — and that is what I like most about it. I’m not particularly interested in story-driven games, and I also struggle with highly competitive shooters. That’s why I really appreciate the fact that the developers were able to focus their efforts on the battlefield experience, combat atmosphere, and pacing instead of trying to add too many other elements. The ambient music and main theme are also excellent.
And screaming BANZAI! together with your teammates over voice chat is pretty great too.
If you enjoy World War II shooters, I think Red Orchestra 2 is still well worth trying.
