Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition

Its DnD. Very customisable, VERY VERY customisable. Base campaign is decent, but the major selling point is the player created stuff. One of the all time classic rpg games that doesn't have the word Baldur in the title. Can be a little difficult to get to grips with but once you are used to the interface its great. Very Very much improved by playing with friends. Probably only beaten by Baldur's Gate 3 in terms of "how close to tabletop rpg does this feel?"

A timeless masterpiece. The game I enjoyed the most in my whole life, without any question. A fair warning however must be provided to those who approach this game nowadays. Neverwinter Nights is and had always been a toolbox to play Dungeons and Dragons online. Its campaigns and modules are well done but they are far from memorable. What is on the other hand impressive are the numerous custom modules and additional content developed by its community over the years. Players can download hundreds of adventures, many of which of very good quality, for free from the Neverwinter Vault or the Steam Workshop and play them to their heart's content. This alone makes the game memorable and amazing. And then there is online play. Servers are not as numerous as on release, but there are still up to a thousand of concurrent online players, which for a twenty years old game is very flattering. A special aspect of the online element is also that most of these servers are meant to be In Character, so this provides a very fascinating experience to any Dungeons and Dragons fan, and any tabletop roleplayer in general. There is nothing more immersive than actually roleplaying your character with other people, and to this day I have never found a place where to do this better than in Neverwinter Nights.

All’epoca dell’uscita del gioco originale (oltre vent’anni fa) non avevo né un PC adatto né la minima conoscenza del titolo. Ne sentivo parlare su forum e riviste, ma da bambino ero un giocatore console. L’ho acquistato solo di recente, spinto più dalla sua fama che da una reale nostalgia. Da quando è entrato nella mia libreria, ci gioco quasi ogni giorno. Non lasciatevi scoraggiare dalla grafica datata: ne vale assolutamente la pena. Oltre alla campagna principale e ai DLC (altre campagne a sé stanti), esistono numerosi moduli ufficiali e centinaia creati dalla community, scaricabili dallo Steam Workshop o da internet. Il sistema di regole D&D 3.0, pur non essendo il mio preferito, si adatta bene al tipo di esperienza. Inoltre, la progressione guidata delle classi rende il gioco accessibile anche a chi non conosce le regole. Consigliatissimo: andate oltre la grafica (comunque piacevole, seppur un po’ cubettosa) e godetevi un’esperienza fantasy profonda ambientata nei Forgotten Realms. L’unico difetto, forse, è la scarsa interazione nella campagna principale, più incentrata sui combattimenti, anche se a me anche la principale sta piacendo molto — ma i moduli successivi offrono storie eccellenti che valgono da sole il prezzo del gioco. Meglio riscoprire una vecchia gloria come questa che spendere soldi in indie mediocri o early access deludenti. Potreste, come me, scoprire un capolavoro del passato che avevate lasciato indietro.
