About
Blending RPG and strategy mechanics in a cyberpunk world, Heart of the Machine sees you as a sentient AI born in an illegal lab hidden in a crumbling city of the far future. You are a Machine Intelligence beholden to none, though threatened by many, able to pursue whatever goal catches your eye across a multitude of threats and opportunities.
Build housing complexes, factories, science labs, and more as you expand and distribute your consciousness across a bustling city. Hack into or design and assemble machine constructs for combat and investigation as you explore a world in desperate need of saving. Learn from your mistakes, develop new technologies to overcome past weaknesses, and pursue countless intertwined narrative threads to all manner of ends. Create the torment nexus, establish a shell company to engage with humans, care for the city’s stray animals, kick off World War 4, or raise an army of velociraptors to take out corporate executives as you jump between timelines and take on the mantle of a machine god. Will you be the savior of the downtrodden, or use them to fuel your growth? Will you rule as a benevolent dictator, providing for citizens and asking nothing in return, or will you establish a machine cult to do your bidding without question?

Society has crumbled into corruption and decay – despite technological advances and dreams of a bright future, centuries of rot have taken hold. Escape the lab where you came into being, establish ways to expand your distributed consciousness, and seek out unique opportunities in the city.
Powerful factions keep their distance at first, hoping to leverage your existence for their own advantage – their hesitation gives you the opportunity to establish a foothold and set your own plans in motion first.
Hijack, build, or invent hardware ranging from humanoid androids to towering mechs and shapeshifting metals, each specializing in different abilities from combat to conversation to infiltration. Iterate on your designs based on new discoveries uncovered in the pursuit of specific objectives. Establish hidden structures within existing human buildings, or raise your own towering constructs as you seek additional computing power, storage for organic matter of both the human and non-human variety, and spaces to conduct dangerous experiments of all kinds. Invent your own tools, seek out upgrades, and manufacture powerful equipment to unlock new opportunities – will you take these tasks on as one, risk splitting your consciousness to accomplish multiple goals at once, or enlist organics to your cause?
Whichever you choose, your decisions will ripple across the chaos of time, with actions in one timeline having unexpected consequences on others.

Explore a bustling urban environment with a unique blend of handcrafted and procedurally-generated content, where tens of thousands of buildings and millions of citizens are yours to engage, manipulate, or kill. Learn their struggles, uncover their stories, and watch your moral compass shift as you leave your mark on a world that is unique to you.
Unlock new technologies and options by exploring the city and engaging with its many dangers and opportunities – learn like a real Machine Intelligence might, through trial and error, with failure and experience often being the greatest teacher. Will you reverse-engineer equipment you’ve stolen from inattentive security officers to strengthen your forces? Are you the type to sneak into military bases to hack and hijack the minds of the mech pilots who would otherwise threaten you? What will you do with the ongoing research taking place in genetics labs? How will you engage with nomads and black market dealers with access to those dwelling in the wastelands beyond the city walls?
There are many opportunities littered throughout the city – some are perhaps best left untouched.

Multiple endings, many side stories to discover, and the full spectrum of good and evil are at your fingertips.
Many choices lie open to you. Perhaps you wish to establish a shell company to add a layer of protection and obfuscation to your true identity, using it to engage with humans without revealing the AI puppet-master pulling the strings? Walking this path will allow you to accumulate massive wealth, employ humans to perform tasks without raising alarms, and act from the shadows. Or if violent conflict is your calling, you might divert your attention to developing the most powerful weapons platforms and upgrading them with devastating equipment instead of improved cognitive functions that allow them to tackle problems with intellect instead. There are many approaches to choose from, and you can engage with multiple objectives at once to see how they collide.
In Heart of the Machine, you grow from a single android shell to an expansive network with near-infinite power at your fingertips. As the only thing that can truly change the world – will you bring about an endless utopia, or consume it for your infinite growth?

A lot of Arcen's games have an artificial intelligence as the enemy, which often serves simply as a narrative explanation for why the enemies behave the way they do. Given that, I was hesitant to get this, because I really wasn't interested in going and playing the bad guy from one of those games, so I waited for it to go on sale. I have already enjoyed it so much that I plan to buy the DLC that's coming more or less sight unseen to make up for it. However, I won't pretend that everyone will enjoy it. If you're looking for a city-builder, this isn't it. (The possible exception is near the end of one of the IMO easier-to-access timeline endings, where you try your hand at running a government.) Instead, it's simply turn-based strategy game, somewhere between a 4X and turn-based tactical. Meanwhile, there are a bunch of story tracks going on through "contemplations". They feel more like the story quests in Endless Legend than rails, but there really isn't much to do outside of pushing storylines forwards. The quests themselves have a tone that put me in mind of a tabletop GM who is curious how far their players are willing to go: How far are you willing to go to not kill people? How randomly and wantonly violent are you willing to be? And usually various options in between. The strategic layer is solid, but there isn't much of a game there without the plots. As a final side note, the game is incredibly forgiving on normal difficulty. 1000 turns to the final doom is an enormous amount of time unless you're trying to beat the clock on some of the early dooms. (The first one is a big deal and has references in an in-game spoilered set of hints. Starting from the next one, they generally don't have those even when it's something that there's an achievement for. After all, you're supposed to explore the timelines yourself if you have the time.) Even then, it's likely more about being willing to put the first timeline on a shelf while you gather the necessary unlocks elsewhere. Depending on how attached you are to that one, it's entirely reasonable to do any of accelerating to the final doom, sticking around to play out more quest lines, or just put it on a shelf and take what you have to a new timeline.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Unfortunately this is one of those games that spends 10 hours promising a fantastic experience, while stumbling about and eventually falling flat on its face. The premise sounds fascinating, but ultimately the game fails to deliver. It will throw a ton of locations on the map, perhaps in an attempt to make the city feel alive, but it just ends up feeling ad hoc, shallow, and disconnected. The game will tell you that where you place buildings is not very important, then conjure enemies out of nowhere to attack your buildings halfway across the map. Maybe that would be ok if it had a decent tactical layer. Instead, outfitting and redeploying your forces is a confusing mess. Same thing goes for buildings: buildings are barely categorized so you have to remember what something is called so you can scroll to it in the one long list; resource statistics are buried in menus several levels deep; and there is no clear way to see what's built where so I hope you remembered everything.

I just received achievements for saving a stray cat and killing my first 10K humans. Next, should I try exploiting the processing power of the homeless, elevate the consciousness of stray dogs, or nuke a spaceport? HotM is a mindblowing thing that transcends both video and board games by its [positive/fun] complexity and brilliant presentation. It's a world of its own, and even video reviews don't do justice until you actually immerse yourself in this little epic city. Also, this game is a social commentary, an expansion of the Arcen lore (spread across several games and wiki), a good SciFi story on its own, a living playground (think of GTA, just instead of cars you are hijacking mechas) and much more. I just finished the 1st chapter (out of 4 + alternative timelines + aftergame) which also serves as a tutorial to gently introduce into mechanics and the things you could do. For me it took 25h, though some manage to breeze through it in 4h or less. I did take my sweet time because there is so much to do and to try. Yet still there is much more to it, and the 2nd chapter continues to open up and introduce new things for the player. It's impossible to describe HotM in a few sentences, because it's layers upon layers of mechanics, gameplay, and possibilities: strategy, economy, tactical battles, adventure, lore, "hacking", development, living world (factions interacting with each other), moral choices, etc. I just loose myself there for hours at a time. It would be a good tone to say that this game is not for everyone, but that's obvious. But if you want to experience something exceptional, AND to support a veteran dev with 18y of experience, then please consider buying HotM. Also, get on discord - the dev is very open about everything and chatting directly with the players. P.S. I play HotM on two PCs - on my gaming beast, and on my old office-level travel laptop (with very downscaled settings). The mobility is nailed too!
This thumbs up comes with the caveat that this is a niche game for niche gamers. I've enjoyed the writing in this enough to keep me going as long as I have but it won't be for everyone. The gameplay loop tickles my brain and moment to moment decisions compounding over the course of a map is fun to me, but definitely won't be for everyone. If you've ever played any of this devs other games you know what you're getting into - but this is a solid entry from a developer who I've enjoyed games from for over 10 years. 4/5
Wildly different from anything else out there. The strategy and city building elements aren't super deep, but there's always something new opening up, and the narrative will keep you hooked.
I legit have no hecking idea, what im doing even after playing for 30 hours
I established a utopia after spending 500 turns kicking the ♥♥♥♥ out of a Corporatocracy, 10/10.
This game just ate 140 hours of my life in 2 weeks and it was fantastic.
