I totally understand why Final Fantasy VII is consistently many peoples favourite in the franchise. This is my third time replaying FFVII and honestly im pretty happy with where it sits now in my head. This game truly shines, especially from its era as one of the games I would be happy to call a piece of art. So much of what this game is sparked a whole generation of games that would reference it, inspire, and create loads of great things and mechanics for gaming as a whole. The game itself will always be very very solid even the original version, this replay I had used the wonderful program called 7th heaven to add a bunch of mods to the game to juice it up to a more modern standard whilst keeping the older playstation flare. I think honestly now that is the definitive way to experience final fantasy vii but the original is just fine too. I don’t really know what to say about it without sounding like a broken record as many other reviews state the obvious with this game. The music, the combat flow, the power system with materia and how that works, and the cast are all super incredible and unique, and was definitely a larger step in a different direction for Final Fantasy as a series. The more grungy aspect at times with Shinra and Midgar and other little things, even the lifestream and living planet to an extent felt different than a typical fantasy experience that FF had given fans up until this point. This is not my favourite experience still in Final Fantasy still but to say I am not a fan of this one would be incredibly contrarian and facetious. My only real gripes are just some small pacing issues, dialogue is a bit outdated and confusing at times, and sometimes a quite unclear direction of where to go (MOST OF THE TIME ITS TOTALLY FINE). But those are all classic RPG things that I dont really dock points for as it totally is a product of their time and I know the remakes are trying to fix some of the sore spots. Overall though for an entrypoint to the “true” Final Fantasy experience you dont get much better than FFVII and I think many modern JRPG fans would come to appreciate this classic.

The classic that pushed JRPGs into the mainstream. Excellent story of the evil megacorp sucking the planet's life force dry, and the terrorist group that forms to stop it, only to reveal a greater story, a greater plot, and a greater threat. I played using the "7th Heaven" mod manager, which let me improve graphics, performance, and dialogue translation. Other mods are also available, but this let the game "feel" more modern instead of a limited PSX-to-PC port. https://7thheaven.rocks/
The single best FF game.
Classic for a reason. Perfect on the Steam Deck. I'd recommend playing with mods. At the very least, the ones that allow 60 fps and the one that changes the chibi models to be more in-line with their actual designs. HD tectures too.
