Successor to the roguelike RPG "Elona". Adventure, survival, crafting, home-building, myths passed down, and stories of humans and Elea spun. What scars will you leave on the land of Ylva?

I wavered a lot on whether to give a thumbs up or thumbs down and ultimately i decided on a very soft thumbs down. This game is fun, no doubt. It's silly, challenging, and it offers you a lot. The systems that are built out, however complex, are fun to engage with, but like in the way gambling is fun. The entire game is RNG. Finding gear, new recipes, upgrades for your followers, is all like playing the lottery. you can spend years in game trying to find the recipe for something as basic and important as a cooker. or you can spend a little too much time grinding tickets to take one from a town, which is the other issue of the game: it's extremely grindy. which isn't inherently a bad thing, but it's not a rewarding enough game. Elin feels like it wants you to go with the flow, use what you find, trial-and-error your way through builds, encounters, and mechanics, but then it refuses to reward you for doing any of that. the gear you find will be bad 99% of the time, and as of now there's no way to meaningfully make your own. the rune system is a start, but it's too shallow and limiting to give you that "hell yes, sick gear" feeling. same thing with building up your followers. you can get lucky and find exactly the right gene (the item that lets you modify followers), or you can spend hours grinding for an elixir that will guarantee you a gene drop, but then you have to once again get lucky/save scum for the gene you want. then, in all likelihood, the gene will have a high cost to apply to your follower, so you'll have to go and grind their level up (a number, like many things in Elin, you can only infer from other data in the base game). The way you gain stats for both yourself and followers is through food, so you'll be spending a lot of time farming/cooking. The egg/breeding system is interesting but also a grind if you want to hatch powerful followers (yes, everyone in Elin comes from eggs). The combat is the combat. It's not extremely in depth, but it's serviceable. I have played mostly casters, so I find I have a lot available to me in terms of spells (there's like a hundred). NPC ai is okay but will definitely cause moments of frustration when your back-line glass cannon inexplicably decides they're a bruiser today. The story is bare-bones and unfinished, and mostly involves key NPCs talking at or around you about their own problems and your silent protagonist just kind of doing what they tell you to. I personally don't mind this, but if you're looking for a story you might want to look elsewhere. The elephant in the room is the questionable content around age. I don't think character age is meant to be taken literally (you can have fully fledged adults that the game labels as 0 years old), but that doesn't absolve the game when you have characters who are labeled "Little Girl" and "Little Sister". It's flavor and it can be ignored, but it's wholly unnecessary. So I would say if you live for the grind, like silly games, or want to engage in something that's bizarre and vaguely addictive, pick up Elin. If you're looking for something where your hard work is commensurately rewarded, maybe skip or mod this game. That said I have 500+ hours and I'm still playing it, so take that how you will.

I almost clicked "recommend' for this game, but then as I started to write out the cons, I realized I actually can't recommend it. The game has depth. Lots of items, loot, skills etc. It's a game where you will want to try things and see what happens. But boy oh boy is is grindy. It is literally a grind simulator more than anything else. Click the button to get wood. Put the wood into workbench to turn the wood into planks. Put the planks in a different workbench to combine it with string. Oh wait, you need to make string on a different workbench. Oh, now you've done all the steps, time to craft: Oops, you died because you worked too hard. Do you wish to restart? Okay, let's restart, I'll be sure to rest next time... Oops you died because you are too hungy! Okay, okay, let me rest and eat and then I'll go hunt for food. Now let's craft the food, but don't craft too many foods at once or you will die from overwork. Okay, how your food and hunger is under control, let's go dungeon dive. Pew, pew, pew. Okay, this is going well. Pew pew, out of spells, let's rest to get a couple more charges. Hmm, there's a Samurai in the lvl 2 puppy cave? He's labeled as easy? Okay, let's take him out real quick... "YOU ARE DEAD!" ONE SHOTTED It's at this point, maybe 10 or so hours in you will realize everything in this game is about as grindy as traditional MMO. Mining, crafit, gathering, cooking, farming... every single thing is an untra grind. And you can't really ignore it, because you can't really progress in combat without grinding. I suppose you could just keep running LvL 2 caves over and over, pay for identify over and over, then sell of the loot and search the map for things to equip without crafting, then move to slightly higher level. But the number of runs needed to do that would be a grind in itself. Also I hate the inventory management in this game. Boxes everywhere.. items everywhere. You have two options: Slop it up and throw everyhthing in a bunch of different boxes or spend hours organizing. I feel my OCD kicking in when I have all these items sloshed everywhere, but I can't even bring myself to get started on organizing. Sometimes I sell resources just because I'm too lazy to movethem around to free up slots. Also the unecessary "Tax" bill is just another way to make it even more grindy. Just as you're saving up for whatever, the tax bill arrives with another wake up call that you're gonna have to walk around and pick up more bones and leaves if you're ever gonna get anywhere. Controls leave a lot to be desired. God forbid you have a backup ranged handy on a magic caster. A melee/caster combo will often lead to you meleeing or casting when you meant to do the opposite. Picking and item up or moving it out of your inventory or gifting it to someone rather than eating it is often a juggle of patience and perfect clicking order. You haven't even lived without accidently committing a crime/attacking something you didn't mean to or just doing something due to a misclick in a town. So yeah... Like I WANT to recommend this game. The depth and base formula is great. But if I imagine where I am now VS where I would be if I put another 30 hours into this game, I imagine the next 20 hours would grinding the crafting/gathering system and re-running caves below my level range, then identifying and selling off the items so I can buy residents. And since there are so many surprise one-shot moments, I imagine I would have to rely on the residents to fight for me. So I know it would not feel fulfilling. They should have made it more viable if you wanted to be more adventurer and skip crafting or aren't interested in relying on NPC autoattackers.. And cut down on all the grindy busy word like walking all the way to town to pay the tax bill. So I cant recommned, but I think someone should make a game like this and make it less grindy or make the grind feel more rewarding somehow.
There is some very creepy/paedophilia content in the game. I don't recommend. It's a shame the game is fun. But the dev has added content that sexualises children. Do not buy.
don't buy this game before life-changing important exams, it is that addictive
Awful. Why ? The game is perfect if you love a JRPG that is mixed up with Rimworld, in this kind of aesthetic that is amazing, with unlimited possibilities litterally on anything. Still, Awful. Why then ? Because this amazing buffet of most refined food, is all poisonned. Poisonned by one thing. The horrendeous one thing that will always make me puke. Underage characters, often described as "female", being litterally pets on which you can "milk" "breed" and forces to "lay eggs", yes yes you're reading right. Oh and of course, human underage little girl, all of that yes. Then if you're a man that is breathing heavily reading this, of rage, ready to tell me that I don't know Japanese culture, that I am faulty one because there is just the option and I can ignore it. Yes I can ignore it, except when you finish the first tutorial, you're being offered to chose a pet from 4 choices, Dog , Cat, an other animal and, the 4th being : "little girl". I chose the cat (I'm a cat person), but like... would you see yourself saying "I chose the little girl, i'm a little girl-person" ? Yeah sounds creepy and weird, I agree. So again: "its a choice you can ignore it", I can... except I can't ? I will obviously never interact with this content, but... it taints the whole experience. I can't play and ignore these things, while knowing it's "there". It's like a huge disgusting spider, if I saw it and next minute it's gone, I'm gonna freak out knowing its under a furniture or behind something (As someone who hates spiders). So yeah no, this game is absolutely disgusting. You would think, in times like right now, when some files have been aired-out, maybe people with these kinds of deranged thoughts would hold off and idk, remove this kind of content ?? The game would be A BLAST without this. I can't pourchase a game, and play it, knowing there is this content in it. Even if I can ignore it and not interact with it in game, this is just morally wrong and disgusting. If you can't comprehend why I am that revolted, I don't think you have a sane mindset about this subject. Even if yes I don't interact with it, I don't want to give a penny towards something that, have this kind of content distributed in the open like this, that is satisfying deranged people (often men, of course). It's called boycotting, I am boycotting this video game studio for that. I won't change my opinion, unless the devs apologize, and remove all of this content, and remove their older games where there was stuff like that as well. Why people can't leave minors alone ? Why some deranged people have to always do something terrible with children ? Also: I am not christian or whatever group that would call themselves "family first" or whatever. I just have common sense, and I wish it would be way more common in the gaming community, we need to shame game studio like that, we need to shame gamer that condone these games and buy it. Japanese culture isn't an excuse for such things, and I think people in Japan, victims of such behaviours don't associate their culture with this. Because the "Culture" isn't a viable excuse at all, and I know for a fact this isn't in "Japanese culture". There happens to have a lot of negative sides to every society, Japan isn't exempt of that, and it is insane to stick any negative or horrible things to a "culture" to try to miserably defend what is child-abuse predaotyr behaviour. So no, I won't take the "culture" excuse as well and this is why I am annihilating that excuse right now. Devs should take this very seriously, this is abjecte.
