This Amnesia is terrible in every way it is nothing like the others, and its the only one I havent beaten yet because I just cant get into it, it is so lack luster. Its extremely story driven but lantern oil is scarce and runs out fast so your left just exploring in the dark running in circle trying to figure out where to go without looking it up online. Its no where near as tense or scary as Dark Decent or The Bunker which are the TOP 2 Amnesia games.

This was a bit sad to play. Not because of the story itself, but because it's still not what I expected from Amnesia. I would say that still, Dark Descent did it best when it came to everything. With this game, the monster felt clunky, the story was okay. I don't like the teleporting from place to place just because the story can. The compass seems like it would play a major part in the game, but gets forgotten after the first hour, the compass being the part were we can go anywhere just because we can. If I could give this game a rating from 1 to 10, it would be a 3.5. compared to the Dark Descent maybe being a 8.5. Full price I wouldn't have bought it, got it on sale wanting to play all of the Amnesia games. I would still place this above Machine for Pigs, that game can put anyone to sleep.
criminally misunderstood game
Amnesia: Rebirth, developed and published by Frictional Games, is a deeply atmospheric and narrative-focused entry in the psychological horror genre that leans heavily into themes of memory, trauma, and existential dread. Unlike its predecessor, The Dark Descent, which emphasized gameplay mechanics like sanity management and survival horror, Rebirth tells a more intimate and emotionally charged story, using horror as a lens through which it explores the human condition. Set primarily in the Algerian desert in 1937, the game follows Tasi Trianon, a French drafter who wakes up alone after a plane crash, disoriented and unable to remember how she got there. As she ventures deeper into the ruins of ancient tombs, colonial outposts, and otherworldly landscapes, she uncovers the devastating truths about her past and the fate of her companions. The narrative structure of Amnesia: Rebirth is one of its strongest assets. Rather than simply presenting a mystery to solve, the game layers memory loss and fragmented identity into its storytelling, using flashbacks, hallucinations, and environmental storytelling to paint a vivid picture of Tasi’s internal and external journey. As she progresses, she uncovers notes, audio logs, and artifacts that slowly reveal the horror that unfolded before her awakening. At the heart of it all lies a maternal narrative—Tasi’s longing to protect her unborn child—which gives the game a poignant emotional weight rarely seen in the genre. The horror is not just from the supernatural or the unknown, but from grief, guilt, and the fear of loss. This emotional core makes Rebirth not only terrifying but deeply affecting. Visually, the game presents a stunning and unsettling variety of environments. From sun-bleached deserts to pitch-black caves, crumbling fortresses, and alien ruins filled with ancient machinery, each location feels oppressive yet distinct. The transitions between grounded historical settings and surreal, otherworldly dimensions are seamless and unsettling. The level design reinforces the game’s central themes of isolation and disorientation, often forcing the player through narrow, suffocating spaces or vast, empty halls where danger could be hiding anywhere—or nowhere at all. These settings aren’t just backdrops, but active participants in the horror, with light, shadow, and sound working together to create an overwhelming sense of vulnerability. Gameplay in Rebirth is relatively light on traditional mechanics but still effective in building tension. While it removes the sanity meter of The Dark Descent, it retains the focus on darkness, light sources, and environmental interaction. Tasi must manage limited resources like matches and oil to navigate the darkness, and being in unlit areas for too long induces a creeping madness, complete with visual distortions and disturbing auditory hallucinations. The game eschews combat, relying instead on stealth and evasion when monsters appear. These encounters are sparse but effective, with an emphasis on atmosphere and psychological dread rather than jump scares or action. The puzzles, while generally intuitive and well-integrated into the environments, sometimes rely on players having keen observational skills, and a few sequences can become frustrating due to unclear objectives or obscure solutions. Where Rebirth truly excels is in its sound design. The ambient audio is rich and terrifying, with distant footsteps, muffled screams, whispering voices, and mechanical groans contributing to a constant state of unease. The music, subtle but haunting, reinforces the emotional arc of the story, never overshadowing the atmosphere but always enhancing it. Voice acting is another high point, particularly from Tasi’s performer, whose delivery captures vulnerability, desperation, and strength in equal measure. This strong audio-visual cohesion elevates the experience beyond a mere horror game—it feels more like an interactive descent into madness and sorrow. That said, Rebirth isn’t without its flaws. The slower pacing, heavy reliance on narrative, and lack of traditional survival mechanics may not appeal to players looking for a more intense or gameplay-driven horror experience. The threat of monsters, while potent early on, becomes more manageable over time, and as players learn the patterns, the fear factor can diminish. Some may also find the ending choices underwhelming or too abstract, depending on the path they take. The game’s ambition in tackling emotionally heavy themes is admirable, but occasionally, its metaphorical elements can feel overextended or underexplained. Despite these shortcomings, Amnesia: Rebirth stands as a compelling and mature evolution of the franchise. It retains the unsettling ambiance and thematic darkness that defined the series while pushing into more narrative-driven territory. What it loses in gameplay complexity, it gains in emotional depth, presenting a protagonist whose fears are deeply human and whose journey resonates far beyond the screen. It’s a game that demands patience and empathy from the player, offering a horror experience that lingers not because of the monsters in the dark, but because of the memories, regrets, and impossible choices that define the story. In the end, Amnesia: Rebirth isn’t simply about surviving a nightmare—it’s about confronting it, understanding it, and choosing how to carry it forward. It’s a thoughtful, often heartbreaking meditation on what we’re willing to sacrifice, and what it means to remember. For those willing to embrace its slower pace and emotionally charged narrative, it offers a haunting and unforgettable journey. Rating: 8/10
I've tried over and over, but I just can't get into it. The plot is interesting enough but unlike the first game I feel like there is a lot of backtracking. Mind you I have consistently played blind and fail to find saltpeter for the canon shell, everything else was intuitive. And yes, I know it's in the quartermaster's den. Problem is it's not there everytime I've restarted a save or playthrough. Each time I come back the desire to try leaves my body.
