Reviews
A great return to form for the series. Not to make this another review about A Machine for Pigs, but the return of vital features from Dark Descent (sanity, resource management, limited lantern use, persistent inventory, hub areas during exploration, real puzzles, visually interesting enemies, player choice leading to multiple endings) really shines a light on how much the previous game dropped the ball. I breathed a sigh of relief multiple times during the first few hours of Rebirth, it truly feels like a sequel to Dark Descent. The expansion of the lore and various ties to Dark Descent are very well done and exactly what I wanted. The sordid history of vitae extraction is explored in great depth and builds upon some of the most harrowing and memorable moments from Dark Descent. Rebirth also charts new territory and builds an identity of its own. The inclusion of vast, sunny outdoor location is fresh, and the increased emphasis on exploring ruins and dig sites gives it an unexpected Indiana Jones vibe at times. The environments you explore in this game are frequently jaw-dropping, you can feel the love and hard work poured into them. I have to give a specific shout out to the fortress section a few hours into the game. The entire area may be the best single section of the series so far. The pacing, lighting, level design, puzzle design, and slow ratcheting of tension is top tier stuff. I thought I must be somewhat jaded 4 games into the series, but my pulse genuinely shot up to the same level of the infamous water section from Dark Descent. I'll also shout out what a treat it was to play as Tasi. To avoid spoilers I will be vague, but simply put, they handled her character with impressive sensitivity and maturity. I have never played as a character going through what she is going through, and her story was quite moving. I also loved how they incorporated her artistic abilities as a draftswoman in the in-game journal. Instead of explicitly writing out hints like in AMfP, they have Tasi draw parts of the puzzle in her journal to keep track of what you need. I also love the hand drawn memories that start out blurry but become visually clear as Tasi regains her memories. I do have some small complaints about this game. I think they way they handle sanity loss and "death" cuts a lot of tension in a way that is detrimental to the horror. I also don't feel like the music is as memorable as it was in Dark Descent or A Machine for Pigs. Finally, especially at the beginning of the game, the gameplay is interrupted a bit too often with flashbacks, it takes about 45 minutes for the game to truly feel like you are able to play for more than 30 seconds without an interruption taking away your control. Overall, I would say this game doesn't quite live up to heights established in Dark Descent, but it does chart its own path and add depth to the world and lore that deepens my appreciation for the entire series. It also feels like a elegant combination of Frictional's catalog up to this point, with obvious story-telling and presentation lessons pulled from SOMA. Great game, easily worth a recommendation.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 24 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 9 places towards #1, and the 2,404 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. The first sequence of the first monster reveal is goat after that. downhill! such a slog to play through you just roll your eyes at how cheesy and low effort this was.. i wish we got a full fledged release of the bunker! now that was a great game compared to this slog fest.
criminally misunderstood game
This was a bit sad to play. Not because of the story itself, but because it's still not what I expected from Amnesia. I would say that still, Dark Descent did it best when it came to everything. With this game, the monster felt clunky, the story was okay. I don't like the teleporting from place to place just because the story can. The compass seems like it would play a major part in the game, but gets forgotten after the first hour, the compass being the part were we can go anywhere just because we can. If I could give this game a rating from 1 to 10, it would be a 3.5. compared to the Dark Descent maybe being a 8.5. Full price I wouldn't have bought it, got it on sale wanting to play all of the Amnesia games. I would still place this above Machine for Pigs, that game can put anyone to sleep.

There were a few moments in this with the classic amnesia feel but that's it. Unfortunately this was more of a Machine for Pigs than a Dark Descent. Too many of the encounters feel super scripted (because they are) and once the illusion is broken it just feels like a walking sim with no stakes. The futuristic stuff didn't do much for me as I found it not scary at all and uninteresting. I do like the main character and the story, but the way they go about telling most of the story is a bit dry. You basically get most of the story through exposition and flashbacks which is not a method of storytelling I enjoy. So far the Amnesia series is probably the most inconsistent gaming franchise I've ever played. Dark Descent: Great Machine for Pigs: Terrible Rebirth: Mediocre
