Finished in 64 hours on Hard mode. The game was great — story, visuals, gameplay, and characters all delivered. A quick tip for Nvidia card owners: turn off the in-game anti-aliasing option and enable it through the Nvidia Control Panel instead — it really makes a difference!
Only (modern) Ys game I've played so far. Was fun at first but wore me down by the end. To start with, the combat is fun but it's simple, has a low skill ceiling, and doesn't develop in any meaningful way during the course of the game. More than an Action RPG it feels more like a fast paced arcade beat'em up where you sprint into crowds of enemies and solve every encounter mostly with button mashing and some parrying. You also have limit break-style "Extra" skills and equipable special moves using skill points that accumulate during fighting, but in practice they're all pretty indistinct. Despite different animations, area of effect, and ratings for different types of damage and status effect, for the whole game (on Hard difficulty) I couldn't ever come up with a reason not to just equip the newest thing and randomly spam whatever's immediately available during combat. The fighting is simple and exhilarating at first but it doesn't have the depth to support a ~50 hour game, and it gets dull. Secondly, this game has a bad ratio of cut scenes to gameplay that seems to get creepingly worse as it goes on. Pretty commonly I'd find myself enjoying the usual hack and slash routine and making progress through dungeons but the game seems to always choose the worst times to decide I need to spend more quality time with my fellow castaways or sit through another 20 minute flashback. I guess this review might be a case of mismatched expectations: I did not expect this game to be so long winded in it's storytelling, and I thought that was something Falcom reserved more for the Trails series. If you want to watch people talk at each other, you might enjoy this more. On the subject of the writing: the story is good but the characters are all tired anime cliches and not interesting. Putting aside the sub-characters who are no better, you have: - silent but eminently agreeable main protagonist who is loved by everyone despite being a cardboard cutout of a RPG protag - slightly stuck up rich girl - burly, salt-of-the-earth middle aged guy who must laugh heartily before uttering any line of dialog - unbearable edgelord - little girl - pure of heart, plot relevant magical girl I'll stress that I don't actually care much that the characters are so typical. Upfront it's pretty obvious in everything in this game's presentation that it's purposely leaning into the comfortable and familiar shounen character designs without any pretenses. What sucks is that writers clearly liked them more than most people certainly will and the game spends about four chapters dumping needless cut scenes and subquests making sure you really get to know and appreciate how trite and boring everyone around you is. The actual main plot is good, nonetheless. If you like the usual grandiose style and themes of JRPG writing, this is probably one of the better examples. But sitting through constant flashbacks and cut scenes with reams of exposition still got tiring. The main story doesn't really pick up (or really even start) until halfway through the game; I feel like if the writers hadn't been so cavalier with my personal attention budget for the first part of the game I could have enjoyed it more. By the time the story got going I found myself in a weird place of being intrigued and wanting the game to hurry up and end anyway.
First of all I'd like to apologize to myself that I've been neglecting this masterpiece for a whole 5 years since this is my first game I bought on Steam in January 2020. I could've let myself experience this peak years earlier but I didn't so I'm sorry, me. Right. So I think it's safe to say that this definitely is one of the best JRPG I've ever played in my life. I'm young and really haven't played much to begin with but I don't think this game will be easily forgotten in me in years to come. I'm not new to Falcom, I've played all Trails, played Nayuta, Tokyo Xanadu, and also YS I & II actually. So whole vibe with Falcom is really just feels at home for me. And this game is... Wow man. Just, wow. What an incredible, well crafted, unforgettable game this was. As you can see in synopsis already you're on a ship about to go to your next journey, but then welp next second the ship wrecked and you're stranded in this cursed island. You gotta explore the island, looking for other survivors, and unraveling the mysteries of what is actually happening in this cursed island. Well you'll save the world while at it but eh JRPG enjoyers saving worlds everyday anyway. Now that sounds... Well okay, I guess? Not really something new or exciting. I mean, you're not in your journey with the boys to escort you to your wedding, or you're not in your journey to explore the world while trying to find the meaning of life of your short 10 years lifespan, or not like on journey to find your step brother that has become this Prophet-like figure to avenge your dead brother and sister, etc. But I kid you not this gonna be one of the most unforgettable memories in you after you finished this game. They made it so solid and refined that everything is just felt so compact and meaningful.. The exploration is fun and quite addictive, especially if you just can't stand that 99.97% of map explored. But it doesn't feel like burden, you're just running through the beach, the forest, the swamp, the ruins, the grass fields, fighting these monsters. And oh my god the combat is so much fun and engaging and so satisfying I'm telling you. It can be challenging as hell if you want, or if you kinda not used in action it's fine set it to Easy and you still can enjoy the game, really. Other thing have to be mentioned is definitely about the NPCs. They are so well written, each one of them I'm telling you you're gonna miss them after you finish the game. They are so unique, so charming, with actual character depth, and you can feel you're bonding with each and every one of them. And obviously the story. Oh. My. God. I can't tell you enough how good the story is. Like, sure you're stranded in this cursed island, then what? Well, thing is, whole thing is definitely DEEPER than what you think. They got... This they got that, all kinds of things kinda put into this making it a mess but it's actually not, they make the game can flow naturally and the story is told in a way that everything is just makes sense. I won't tell you much, but if I can borrow my friend words here, he said it's like Kimi no Na Wa (Your Name) if it's told with more depth and given more time to make the characters grow on you. Now take that whatever you will. Cause you’ll love Dana anyway at the end man, what a well written character. Next is maybe graphic, well nothing much can be say about this. I mean it's just that kinda basic anime 3D style with prepared poses and stuff so nothing too crazy about this but oh man it'll grow on you I swear. There's also couple of characters portrait and some scene in this unique hand drawn style, I personally like it and I think it's neat. Then there's music. Dude. If you're new to Falcom, you're in for a treat, bro. God this is one of the days when Falcom Music was really on their peak I kid you not. Beautiful music, memorable tune, when it rocks it rocks, when it makes you cry you bawling your eyes out drying that tears. Again, one of the best JRPG that just sitting around in the corner of my library that I have finally finished. If you haven't heard of this game, or maybe not in too deep to Ys series yet, or maybe really just randomly stumble upon this game and accidentally read my review until this far, really, just buy the game it's cheap anyway especially on sale, then just, jump into the game, go stranded in the island and save the world, I promise, you will not regret this journey. DANA FOREVER!
