About
WizardChess is Deckbuilding Chess from a preposterous fantasy realm, invented by mysterious wizards. Multiple game modes challenge players to think on their feet and balance tactics with speed: hit the Arcade for quick, replayable runs or explore the world in Story mode. Whether you're an amateur or an expert WizardChess has something for Grandma's and Grand Masters alike.

Manoeuvre specialized units (of 50+ unique classes) in emergent, often unhinged, turn-based combat and use unique skills to defeat enemy units. Much like chess, small errors can (and often will) lead to harsh consequences. Unlike chess, your pieces are enchanted and have ATK, DEF and SKL stats... and your opponent(s) are the Fae.

Recruit, upgrade, sacrifice, trade and gamble your units away to create the most powerful build you can. Learn the systems, unlock the full pool of units and take calculated risks and maybe you’ll defeat the Fae Queen herself.
WizardChess is entirely procedurally generated. Every run, every room, every tile, every item, and every unit is determined by a combination of luck and a dynamic response to your playstyle. Each biome features unique rooms, enemies and a boss with its own opponent "style" and scaling difficulty.

WHY IS THIS GAME SO UNDERRATED IF YOU DONT HAVE IT GO BUY IT AND PLAY IT NOW THIS GAME IS PEAK
1/10 Half the time it puts you in a genuine no-win position from the very beginning and there's just nothing you can do about it whatsoever you don't get to choose which units you bring into a round (???????), and the game ACTIVELY TRIES TO GIVE YOU USELESS UNITS SO THAT YOU LOSE (it gave me 4 0 attack 1 health chickens and since i was out of sacrifice spots there was nothing i could do when i HAD TO go into the next round with three completely useless units and 1 gimmick unit immediately ending my run) There are CONSTANT CONSTANT CONSTANT bugs & crashes, even ruining my first final boss run WHEN I WAS 1 TURN AWAY FROM WINNING They never added misclick protection and your cursor isn't your cursor, there's an in-game selector and that's what it's selecting with BUT IT DOESN'T FOLLOW YOUR CURSOR INSTANTLY SO IF YOU CLICK ON A SQUARE BUT THE IN-GAME SELECTOR HASN'T CAUGHT UP YET IT SENDS IT TO THAT SQUARE (AGAIN, THEY HAD TO ACTIVELY GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO PROGRAM THIS IN TO SCREW YOU OVER)

Fun during my mechanics of solids class
Fun, silly and charming. Me like.
BEST GAME EVERRRRRRR
It's so rare to see a unique rogue-like interaction, and it's done so well here! The fact that everyone knows how to play chess helps ground the otherwise quite complex systems, and allows the game to go really out there in its design! I have work I need to do, but I can't stop playing wizard chess!
Честно, фигня какая-то. Вроде шахматы, но с магией и всякими фишками, которые только мешают. Игра не заходит, слишком странно и неинтересно. Лучше бы просто обычные шахматы сделали
This is a fun little tactical battle roguelite. I don't know why it calls itself 'chess' as it's not chess-related in any way but the most abstract "all tactical games are a bit like chess" kind of manner, but that's okay. You buy new units which are listed as cards, but it's not a deckbuilder, it's a tactical game. The art is very basic, but units are visually distinct and the camera is easy to control. The music is an unexpected jazzy sort of lighthearted theme that I found I rather enjoyed, certainly not like anything else in the same area. My one major complaint is that you can't save and exit mid-run, runs aren't all that long but it's still something important to be able to do. My minor complaint is that every time you end up back at the title screen it gives you the 'enable/disable diagnostics' menu again, why. Because I'm on Steam Deck? Anyway. It's fun, probably a good sale or bundle buy.
I'm usually not into strategy games but this one feels good. Still, I'm a bit disappointed there are only 3 bosses (maybe there will be more once I progress further)
This is a nice coffee break rogue-like, perfect for short sessions : a full run is around 30mn. Pros - very fun - interesting progression mechanics - many units - tactical gameplay, more similar to TRPGs than Chess - pretty original with some amusing weirdness Cons - my first impressions were not very good ; so I advise to persist a bit before quitting ;) - some flaws in the game design department ; do not expect robust tactical gameplay - the AI do the job but has some issues - the scaling options are not much of use on a 4K screen Conclusion: Even with many flaws, WizardChess succeeds to be a fun and addictive time waster. Not for everybody but still very recommended. EDIT 01/2025: Now, the Arcade mode has a very welcomed addition : a purely turn-based mode. In this mode, you'll have to "Up the ante" in each round to have better chances to win a new unit at the end of the run.
