A complete letdown compared to the previous two
Giving this game a thumbs down. I had some fun with it, but there are a few problems. The first is that when you launch the game you are given the choice of making a multiplayer or single player character. I made a multiplayer character and played about an hour. During this time I got horrible loading times between levels and finally the game crashed. I launched again and could not find the server. The multiplayer in this game does not seem to work, or I could not get it to work. So that was a huge waste of time on my part, as I had to start over and can now not play with friends. If the servers work, then they are unreliable and if they don't work, then don't let people make a multiplayer character. Now I played the pirate class. It is a cool class. You can summon undead minions and can summon a huge ghost ship to kill your enemies with a cannon. That's great. My feedback here would be feedback. There is nothing showing which minions I have summoned. And the minions look the same for the most part. Other games (Diablo, Path of Exile, Etc.) will show you icons for the minions you have summoned, here you better keep count, or you will waste your resources to cast minions you already have. Other parts of the game with bad feedback include me taking damage for no reason I can see. You will suddenly just start losing health and there is no visible feedback on screen. The game loves to tell you every time you spring a trap, but gives little other feedback. Other than that, the game is a very basic ARPG. It has charm, but none of the charm of the first or second game. I do like the classes, they have some pretty unique classes like the undead pirate and the railmaster. There are also some really fun legendary weapons to play with and the game does reward multiple characters with account wide buffs and a shared loot tab. The game also works well with a controller, which is how I like to play ARPGs now. If you can get past the lack of functioning multiplayer and the poor feedback the game gives you and the basic story, there is fun to be had, but there are many better ARPGs that are more worth your time.

While functional, this game is a major step down from the previous Torchlight: boring plot, samey environments, art design so shiny and plastic looking my eyes bounce off it, and tedious combat all combine to make an ARPG where no matter how smooth the experience may be you would be betteroff playing any other game in the genre. Do not reccomend.
Well I gave it a fair shot, but honestly I’m struggling to see why this game exists when Torchlight 2 already did everything better. There are either bugs here, or design choices that just feel really bad. 1) After clearing a boss dungeon, the whole top level resets. All the monsters respawn and even the map resets, so you lose any sense of where you’ve already explored. That means running through the same areas again just to get back out. It doesn’t feel like gameplay, it just feels like padding. 2) The level design gets repetitive very quickly. I’ve already seen the same boss sections and dungeon layouts reused multiple times across different areas. After a while it starts to feel like the game only has a handful of maps that are just shuffled around. 3) The enemies are boring. There isn’t much variation and most fights just feel like hacking through waves of health bars with little difference between them. For a dungeon crawler where combat is the main activity, it becomes dull surprisingly fast. 4) Character progression feels shallow. You unlock most of your abilities pretty early and the skill choices don’t feel meaningful. Levelling up often feels like you’re just slightly upgrading the same abilities rather than building a character in an interesting way. 5) The loot system is oddly dull for a game that is supposed to be about loot. Gear drops constantly but most of it feels forgettable. There’s rarely that moment where something drops and you get excited to check it out unless it is a unique boss - but even then it doesn't drop based on your character class (played a DuskMage and continued to get hand to hand). 6) The story is barely there. It mostly just pushes you from one dungeon to the next without really giving you a reason to care about what’s going on. It really is very boring, and to be honest Torchlight 1 and 2 had the same thing - but - I felt like there was a story there, this is just quests strung together. 7) There are also technical issues. I’ve run into frame drops and odd bugs while playing, which makes the experience feel rough around the edges. Items which don't pick up, items which don't do what they are say they do, one item which in fact caused a negative instead of a positive. I am not sure what they were thinking when they released this - it plays very much subpar to other ARPGs, and while has a nicer graphic overall, it is less interesting and exciting to play. The frustrating thing is that Torchlight 1 and 2 were actually fun ARPGs. This one feels watered down and strangely shallow compared to those games. It almost feels like a simplified version rather than a proper sequel. Maybe it improves later on, but the early experience is so repetitive and dull that it feels like pulling teeth trying to keep going.
I've come back to this multiple times to try to finish, but I keep loosing interest before too long. Torchlight I & II are so much better. Play them instead and leave this alone.
My wife and I picked this up at 85% off and its still not really worth it. Grim Dawn actually goes on sale cheaper and is 100 times the value in every way. 1. If you buy this on sale for just the singleplayer to kill time casually its okay'ish. 2. Multiplayer really shows the issues. Really long loading screens in between zones, Unable to trade with others (soooo bad). Rubberbanding and latency issues in multiplayer especially with dungeon traps like spikes that are littered everywhere. For a game that started as some sort of mobile or mmo focused title, the multiplayer networking is some of the worst I have ever seen. Its too bad they couldnt just leave in LAN support like TL2. Multiplayer is super frustrating. 3. Classes are bland and the abilities are not many. This is not a great game if you want build diversity at all. And some skills feel beta spammable, its hard to explain -- the main cannon shot with the forge class feels really weird. 4. Enemies vary in difficulty. 5. So far there is no passive healing regen on characters, maybe its on gear butr I havent had the energy to find out. This means you have to just chug potions which is boring. 6. Boss fights are pretty meh and bosses and enemies have some abilities that are just really annoying. 7. The game just has no soul. It feels abandoned and unfinished. 8. Graphics settings require a keyboard and mouse to set and save, cannot do it on a controller that I can figure out. Also every time the game is restarted thsoe settings are lost. Pros: 1. Graphics are pretty good especialy for a torchlight game, they work fine. 2. The pet system is pretty fun 3. The forst isnt revolutionary but my wife and I had a little fun with it. 4. We experienced zero crashes. There were bugs, but no crashes. I would only suggest getting this if you really like Torchlight. It was okay. If you have a significant other or kiddos its okay to sink time in together but the multiplayer issues will wear you down pretty quickly.
Ehhh - my first Torchlight experience was 2 - and in 2026 I would recommend people to play 2 or even 1 over this. There is a slim chance I'll come back to this to try to get a character through all the acts. But it was like pulling teeth.
After putting loads of hours into Torchlight 2 I picked up the next game in line. After playing it only a little I dropped it and apparently never started it as I own the game for over a year. Would NOT recommend.
T2 was better but this is ok
