About
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: By purchasing the game, you actually get two games now: 1) The original The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, 2) The Unreal Engine 4 remaster called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux. Please see The Astronauts website for details.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won’t be able to see them.
You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.
Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.
Still, the discoveries won’t happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul’s supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.
Explore and interact with the beautiful yet ominous world of Red Creek Valley, which was created with the use of revolutionary photogrammetry technology that allows for nearly photorealistic environments.
Communicate with the dead and see how they died in order to gather clues that help you piece together the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance -- and the fate of his family.
Experience, in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye, and horror fiction, all of it inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and H. P. Lovecraft.
Conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although there are a few scary bits in the game, players will have no need for sedatives. Our game is less about terror and more about clammy unease.

Eine wundervolle Geschichte mit Twists.
It is hard not to notice the graphics in this game, so let’s just state it once and for all: this game looks amazing. I have no trouble just walking around here and enjoy the walk as I could and would in real life. There is more than walking and gawking to do here, though, so let’s move on. The power of imagination and joy of storytelling is a strong theme throughout the game, but this is shown by example instead of being talked about. The examples we get are plenty and things happen on many different layers at the same time. The more I think about it, the less certain am I of which level we, as the protagonist, are really operating on. I don’t want to spoil too much of the story, so suffice it to say that we are both there and not there, and that there are more to the story than meets the eye. The main story is told from two opposite perspectives and one of these has been spiced up with a couple of sidestories and secrets. You don’t have to bother with all this multilayered meta-stuff, though, if you don’t want to, because the main story and all the side stories can still be enjoyed on their own. They are all doing a good job of demonstrating the main theme. The main mechanic is investigating a number of crime scenes in both the present and past by using the player character’s special ability, as a detective, of seeing—but also sort of entering the still lingering memories of what happened—and put all the pieces together in the right order. There are also a few extra puzzles, like the Vandergriff house puzzle where each room is a piece. This puzzle has been slammed for not making sense in its context, but I see it as a reminder that we are reorganizing the memories in a dead, but lingering mind. To me it makes sense in the context of storytelling and how we remember things, and I also liked the puzzle in itself as a welcome challenge. The music quite competently sets the tone of melancholy, nostalgia, and the pains of growing up in such restrictive surroundings. The whole area of Red Creek Valley feels like a ghost being kept there against its will. All it wants is to move on, but the memories of what once was, stops it from leaving. Egyik kedvenc játékom lett. A grafika zseniális, az idő többségében meg nem mondanám hogy 2014-es a játék. A level design szintén nagyon ötletes, élmény járkálni a pályán, sok az érdekes helyszín. A zene illik a játékhoz.
Quite nice. Now technically, this game is a walking simulator. But it is quite a good one. It also never quite 100% tucks itself into that category. Obviously, this is a game you buy to look at, as the environment is absolutely gorgeous. The game has a few puzzles. Their pretty ok. The story, I personally found was kind of disappointing once you figured out what it actually was. On the actual “Walking Simulator” front, the game doesn’t quite have the constant turns and immersion of Walking Sims like “Dear Esther”, but it is still good, and it’s also nice enough to give you a sprint button for if you decide to replay or what not. All and all, it’s definitely one of those games you get in order to experience, rather than play. And it’s a pritty good experiance.
Good game but
I was unable of using the fast travel at the end, so I thought that, maybe, only works when you left one or more stories unfinished
. If that is the case, then, is weird to have the option if you play in certain way and not having it at all if you play in a total different manner, because, aside from the stories themselves there is "something" that could be left behind in the initial playthrough that unlocks an achievement.
Das Spiel war damals wie heute Wunderschön anzusehen und zu spielen! Ich Empfehle jeden der auf Mystery Spiele steht sich dieses Spiel zu kaufen!
Very fun, entertaining and engaging game that makes you stop and think to piece together the mystery.
So impressed!!! Next step to read Ambrose Bierce "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge"
Très bon jeu narratif, l'histoire est émouvante, prévoyez des mouchoirs.
