The game is **BROKEN**, you cannot get out of the main menu because it can't read mouse input. You gotta switch to "compatibility mode" and play in 640x480. If you're lucky enough to make it to the game despite that, you'll have the choice between 60fps cap or running your GPU at full force 2000fps. Oh, and Steam doesn't give a flying ♥♥♥♥ and won't refund.
A really atmospheric and tight adventure-puzzle game featuring a lone space traveler coming face to face with a hefty dose of human frailty, existentialism and giant stones.. Some puzzles really challenged me to the limit but overall the experience was tight and the story foretold through logs and recordings weaved an intrinsic narrative of what it means to exist and what we truly are. Highly recommended for a couple of evenings of tight but really well constructed puzzles accompanied by the fathomless depths of space.

The Swapper is an excellent puzzle game made by Finnish indie devs. The puzzles are competently crafted and the story is surprisingly deep! By competent I mean the puzzles leave little room for cheesing and it is impossible to soft lock your progress. For nerve-racking puzzle games that is always appreciated! The swapping mechanic offers a unique perspective that only becomes more demanding as new dimensions are added. The story asks very deep psychological and philosophical questions about humanity and consciousness. If you are familiar with the "Ship of Theseus" paradox, then you get the gist of The Swapper. What would you chose, to stay alive or to keep your identity for a precious few more seconds? Will you give up Everything for survival just because natural instincts dictate so, or will you preserve your amassed knowledge and memories that make you who you are, but you will perish today. For a project made by 2 students in their free time, this is an extraordinary achievement! Amazing game. Must play for puzzle game lovers.
Sadly, this thumbs up comes 12 years too late, but it's better late than never. This game feels like a wholesome experience. A moderately short experience but it helps the game not become stale. Th mechanics are just as mysterious as the story. The difficulrt is probably on the easier side but there are several interesting headscratchers. ANd I loved the atmosphere in the game. Desolation, loleliness (despite having someone to talk to), mystery and lifeless coldness of space. It's as if from the very start the game tells you "this is not going to end well if you proceed" but you still push on to see it for youeself. A small gem that will occupy its own place in my heart.
I was lucky that the game was still on an old laptop and I was able to play it. The game can't cope with today's hardware and the mouse bugs. Unfortunately, I can't confirm whether an older operating system helps or whether I was lucky, so be warned. I can't give the game a bad review though. The mechanics are great and I enjoyed the puzzles. The atmosphere is just right, but I was a bit annoyed by how slow the game felt.
An eerie yet enjoyable puzzle platformer with great atmospheric sound and a strong piano soundtrack. Some of the puzzles really tease your brain, but you can figure everything out with some persistence and experimentation. I've seen reviewers complain about bugs that prevent game startup, etc., but I played with the compatibility beta enabled (as recommended in the forums), and the whole game was smooth as butter for me. No problems at all.
A decent puzzle game with an interesting concept and story. I enjoyed using the swapper device to solve puzzles and progress through the game. Fairly short - I completed it over two days, but it is definitely possible to do in one long run. It did leave me wanting more. I liked that it went into the philosophy behind using the device. I felt like some ideas weren't explored enough and I'm not sure how I feel about the ending(s), but I enjoyed the journey. I don't know if I am just forgetting, but I don't know if the game covered who I was playing as or how I got there (and why). Another character did refer to my character as "the girl" at the end, but that is about it. I expected more game mechanics would show up than the clone/swap functions, but those still made for some good puzzles. I will say that solving some of the puzzles was a little frustrating at times as all it is very easy to screw up (such as by messing up your positioning), resulting in you having to start all over due to the constraints. A couple of the puzzle towards the very end had me stumped, with one getting me to stop and come back the next day with a fresh mind. I think I may have solved another in an unintended way also. One quality of life issue is the absence of any manual save/chapter select. This is especially important for log entries, as some of them are tied to achievements. Some of these are missable - thankfully there are guides on here showing their content if you do want to read them. One you finish the game, your save is essentially gone (just plays the credits), so you also would miss out on content at the end of the game also. I backed up my save outside of the game to get around this. This game was in my Steam library for over a decade (one of the first games I ever bought), so I'm glad to tick it off.
A BRILLIANT PUZZLE SOLVING EXPERIENCE BUT NOTHING MORE
The Swapper is a 2D Sci-fi Puzzle Platformer set in a desolate spaceship. You are a space technician, equipped with a clone gun and being trapped in the spaceship, you are to find a way out, solving the cleverly put-together puzzles i.e., collecting orbs that grants you further access into the spaceship, as you progress. The game is pure puzzle oriented, meaning, you do not have to do anything else like fight any aliens or enemies. My summary on the game:

Story & Presentation 6/10 The story of you being trapped in a spaceship, as you unravel the mystery surrounding the death of the crew, showed great promise but reading a bunch of messages is a bleak attempt to deliver the story. The premise was there but the presentation felt weak. Only the ending had an impact on me.

Gameplay 9/10 As a puzzle solving game, the game does deliver some amazing puzzles that will have you thinking deep to solve them. The cloning gun is the central aspect of the game, creating a unique interesting experience.

Gameplay Length 7/10 Around 6 to 7 hours to complete the game, depending on your puzzle solving ability. Due to the lack of an engaging story, and puzzle solving being the only activity, the drive to push on further vanishes mid-way and it starts to feel like a drag. At one point, I wished that the game should have been shorter.

Graphics 7/10 The art style looks unique and great. However on 4k the game looks scaled.

Sound 8/10 There is not too much going on in the game at any given point. It’s just calm and serene throughout. The sci-fi music and sound effects succeed in creating the sole survivor ambience. The soundtracks in the game are really good.

Controls 9/10 Movement and all the mechanics in the game feels fluid. Plays real nice on a controller.

Difficulty/Challenges 9/10 The puzzles offer the right amount of challenge. Never will it cause frustration.

For a calm and tranquil puzzle solving experience with great soundtracks, with no combat/action and not much of a narrative experience, 'The Swapper' is perfect. Recommended, only if you want something to sit back and relax on, while also putting your brain to mild use.
MY SCORE: 7.8/10
It's a good game, not hard enough to become enraging, cool puzzles, story is also interesting. Definitely worth it. Mouse continues broken, buy it only if you plan to play on a gamepad.
Well, now! This review has been a long time coming! We have to go back to May 31, 2013, when I bought this game. It was probably on GamersGate because I activated it with a key. I played it for a bit, but I remember getting stuck. The game probably slipped my mind and I didn't finish it. I have screenshots from almost three years later, in early 2017, when it appears I tried again. That didn't last long, I think I only played one session! Here we are in June 2025, and I've finally completed The Swapper. A couple of factors converged, reminding me to play this classic game. The unexpected maintenance update in May brought it to my attention again. Then shortly after, I played The Midnight Walk. The art style, based on clay and real materials, forced me to recall The Swapper. I had to go back to finish it! The game is excellent and still holds up a dozen years after I first played it. Yes, there were still some stiff challenges, but I tried to get creative and push the swapping mechanics to their limits... that actually worked for some of the trickiest puzzles! I was able to complete the game without looking up any solutions. I wouldn't have recognized the references to real world philosophers of Consciousness during the two previous times I played The Swapper. I knew Dennett, of course, but I wasn't aware of this aspect of him at the time. I only learned of Chalmers about five years ago. The game ending felt abrupt. I felt like the story had further to go, though I can see how the swapping mechanics had probably produced as many interesting puzzles as they could. This theme of consciousness manipulation creates an eerie atmosphere, one which SOMA (2015) has since taken and run with. The Swapper has what I want in an indie puzzle game - a cool puzzle mechanic, a creative visual style, and a brief runtime. The creepy, mysterious narrative that breaks up the puzzle rooms is a huge bonus. I love this game.
