The Roottrees are Dead

A fun and engaging send up to games such as The Return of the Obra Dinn and The Case of the Golden Idol. The game is simple in it's mechanical construction and execution. Nearly the entire game takes place on one screen. The complexity comes from it's narrative. It succeeds in fulfilling the voyeuristic fantasy of detective fiction in a way few games in the genre ever have. It will only hold your hand if you specifically ask for hints but is mostly content to let you piece together its mystery. Yet there’s nearly always enough narrative threads to chase down that its rare to find yourself at a dead-end. A lesser narrative would of painted a more lurid story of betrayal and conspiracy. Yet the writers had enough restraint to realise that if they followed that path, it would only detract from the core fantasy the game presents. The less grounded the Roottrees, the less engaging the family becomes to investigate. My only negative come down to the games length. While I completed the base game in a breezy 6 hours, the additional mode of Roottreemania adds about another 3 to that total. At this length the games mechanical simplicity goes from a strength to a burden. Overall a fun and engaging game. Cant wait to see what the studio makes next.

I originally played this on itch, and loved it. I debated buying it because I already finished the entire story, but wanted to support the creators of this masterpiece. After I read that Roottreemania was a whole new story and equal in length to the original, it was an easy buy. Huge recommendation from me!! I am currently playing though Roottreemania and really enjoying that as much as the original release. Great deduction game that really challenges you to pay attention. The notes system is really intuitive and easy to sort, so you don't need to write things down on paper to keep track of all the little details you uncover. If you get stuck, the hint system is layered and can eventually solve it for you, (though I don't recommend using it unless you get really stuck). I have been trying to find games that scratch this same itch and not many come close. Type Help was another that I played on itch, by the same creator, and really enjoyed. It is getting a steam release soon under the name Galley House, or something similar. i hope they add new content to that as well, because I would love to play through additional content on that too. Thank you to the creator of this for introducing me to a whole new genre of games that I didn't know I would love. Keep up the good work! I look forward to any future releases.

好玩！适合喜欢查族谱的朋友（shide），个体感觉本传比狂热好打，推理逻辑也相对明显（可能因为都是名人？），哪怕是最后的谜题也比较容易猜到，至少玩到一半的时候就隐约有预感了，所以不怎么需要小黄鸭。狂热的主要情况是很多更新的信息建立在本体的基础上，有时候没想到要去重新搜索本体的一些信息，就容易错过。 PS：配乐很不错o(￣▽￣)ｄ
