About

Bright lights flare across the night sky. The wind rages outside the thin walls of your wooden cabin. A wolf howls in the distance. You look at the meager supplies in your pack, and wish for the days before the power mysteriously went out. How much longer will you survive?
Welcome to THE LONG DARK, the innovative exploration-survival experience Wired magazine calls "the pinnacle of an entire genre".

THE LONG DARK is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster.
In THE LONG DARK, you are getting both the genre-defining Survival Mode, honed after years of open development and frequent updates, and the award-winning episodic narrative mode, WINTERMUTE.

THE LONG DARK: SURVIVAL MODE brings you the genre-defining Survival Mode, honed after years of open development and frequent updates. Widely considered the paramount Survival game of all time, SURVIVAL MODE gives you pure focus on THE LONG DARK’s Survival Sandbox -- the experience that started it all!

Included with both THE LONG DARK: SURVIVAL MODE and THE LONG DARK, Survival Mode is the free-form, non-narrative Survival Sandbox that has defined the genre since launching on Steam in 2014. After years of open development and dozens of major updates, THE LONG DARK now stands at the pinnacle of the entire genre. Survival is your only goal, and death your only end. Make your own survival story with every game.

The game that defined death for the survival genre. When you die in Survival, your save is deleted. Every decision matters.

The game challenges players to think for themselves by providing the information but never the answers. You have to earn the right to survive.

Monitor your Hunger, Thirst, Fatigue, and Cold as you struggle to balance resources with the energy needed to obtain them. Every action costs Calories, and time is your most precious resource. Choose your path carefully.

Over 100 gear items including Tools, Light Sources, Weapons, First Aid supplies, Clothing, and more.

Explore a 50+ square kilometer Northern Canadian wilderness spanning 12 major regions and all the zones that connect them in search of life-saving supplies. Distant mountains, coastal towns, mines, farmlands, and a huge expanse of brutal winter wilderness to test your survival mettle.

Hunt, fish, trap, climb, map, search for life-saving food and gear items, and try to avoid dying from the hostile wildlife, succumbing to hypothermia, frostbite, or dysentery (amongst other uncomfortable afflictions), find and maintain your life-saving gear. Hunt and be hunted by: Wolves, Bears, Moose, Rabbits, Deers, Crows, and more to come in future updates.

Four distinct Experience Modes let you find a challenge level you are comfortable with, such as Pilgrim Mode, which is meant to be quiet and pensive, all the way to Interloper Mode, where only the most experienced survivors have a chance to last a week. If none of the four Experiences suits you, use Custom Mode settings to tailor your Survival Mode game to your specific tastes.
Features the music of Sascha Dikiciyan.

Several standalone Challenge Modes offer objective-based experiences designed to last 1-3 hours each, such as Whiteout -- the race to gather enough supplies to prepare for a monster blizzard. Or Hunted, where you need to escape a murderous Bear. Complete them to unlock Feats that provide long-term gameplay benefits in Survival Mode. Additional Challenges include: Hopeless Rescue, Nomad, Archivist, As the Dead Sleep, and Escape the Darkwalker.

Included in THE LONG DARK The episodic story-mode for THE LONG DARK, WINTERMUTE, includes four of the five episodes that form WINTERMUTE. Episode Five is in development, and is slated for release at a later date. This will bring the WINTERMUTE storyline to its conclusion.
The first four episodes of WINTERMUTE represent approximately 30 hours of gameplay. Episode Five is included in the price of the game, and will be unlocked for free when it is released.

Bush pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated after their plane crashes deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness in the aftermath of a mysterious flash of light in the sky. Struggling to survive as he desperately searches for Astrid, Mackenzie comes across the small town of Milton, where he begins to understand the scope of this quiet apocalypse.

Mackenzie’s search for Astrid takes him deeper into the savage Winter wilderness. A mysterious trapper may be the key to finding Astrid, but can he be trusted?

In the aftermath of events in Milton, an enigmatic stranger rescues Dr. Astrid Greenwood (player character) from near death. Facing the blizzards of Pleasant Valley, Astrid must bring all her skills as a doctor to bear on the survivors she encounters. But will she find Mackenzie, and get closer to the mystery that's taking them to Perseverance Mills?

A murderous gang of convicts has captured Mackenzie. Desperate to escape one of the darkest corners of Great Bear Island, he must somehow survive his fiercest enemy yet. Can Mackenzie recover the Hardcase, continue his search for Astrid, and also save the innocents caught up in this deadly confrontation?
NOTE: Unlike Survival Mode, WINTERMUTE does not feature permadeath. You can save your progress as you play.
Features performances by Jennifer Hale, Mark Meer, David Hayter, and Elias Toufexis (Episode Three), and the music of Cris Velasco.

In addition to releasing the remaining episode of WINTERMUTE, we intend to continue updating Survival Mode with limited free updates alongside our paid DLC Expansion Pass, TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY. This is on top of the over 100 updates we have made to the game over the past 8 years of open development. Keep in mind that your purchase of THE LONG DARK entitles you to all five episodes of WINTERMUTE without extra charge.

Every market we collect.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

The final chapter of the story force you joining a gang of criminals who burns schools with innocent people and children inside. I do not support that writing and there is no way to justify burning kids alive.
So this is a split decision. I've spent hundreds of hours in the survival mode and played since Early Access. I don't think the game even has all my actual hours logged. I love the survival mode, it's got a great vibe to it and they've continually added a LOT to it for years. The price is worth the survival mode alone. The story mode, on the other hand, ended up being a huge idiotic waste of time. The final episode just blows the whole effort. Putting aside the many and significant flaws, like the rules on the wildlife being changed to force conflict and the VERY linear experience, the story conclusion is flatly horrible. Without getting into spoilers, the devs nonsensically retconned in a pile of hostiles to force a truly terrible narrative conclusion that makes flatly no sense whatsoever. Even worse, there are multiple instances in the cutscenes where characters ignore all common sense possible in order to force the narrative to have conflicts down the road. It's wild that I've waited years for this story to finish only to yell at the ending cutscene multiple times for characters not doing the obvious or making the most insane ridiculous decisions possible. Buying this for just the survival mode is worth it. But unfortunately, just don't waste your time on the Story mode. The ending sours the entire experience, and the experience has plenty of rough spots as well.
The game tries to be realistic, but fails for several reasons; 1. The resource management/survival elements are completely out of whack - ◦ The human body can go up to 72 hours without water, but your character’s thirst meter depletes **way** faster than that. ◦ The human body can survive much longer without food, albeit it varies significantly depending on the conditions. This depletes almost just as fast as your thirst meter. 2. The world is weirdly barren, even places like the towns that used to have people. If everyone died suddenly, there should be way more food, weapons, clothing, and other resources, but nearly every building is empty except for the occasional can of soup or box of matches. 3. The lack of weapons. Look, I know this takes place in Canada, but surveys indicate about 37.3% of small-town residents owning firearms. The game only has 4 weapons, one of which is a spear you have to make & has a crappy mini game attached to it, and the other is a flare gun which is completely optional. Meanwhile there are several items that should be able to be used as weapons, like the hatchet, but you just… can’t. 4. Literally the entire plot of Wintermute. If you want to have a game be difficult because you’re claiming it’s “realistic”, don’t have the entire reason why it’s difficult be because of some supernatural force or whatever.
Leaving negative review for the story mode. The most incoherent and stupid, cheesy and predictable story. Game making you work for equipment only to take all away five minutes later. The writer should be fired for such crappy writing, but I guess you cant really fire ChatGPT. Survival mode is still dope though.
12 years for this? Episode 5 has got to be some of the worst storytelling I have every experienced. The voice acting, choreography, or action in the latest season was so bad I thought a sweatshop worker wrote it. Astrid is completely insufferable "oh i LOVE you MACKENZIE"!!! (divorced after kid died omegalul) I didn't bother to loot basically anything the last episode, and I'm glad I didn't, because your loot is reset actually 5 times. Episodes 1-3, pretty darned good, 4 and 5 are a joke. Canadian tax dollars for this btw.
The Long Dark — это штучный продукт.
I got jumped by a wolf while I was carying 10 packs of flour back to my base, I had nothing the wolf would be interested in on my person. The next morning I hunted that wolf down, skinned him, took any good meat, and left his guts for the crows, I then cooked and ate him infront of a cougar to establish dominance on the island. The wolfs pelt is now my toilet mat and the cougars pelt is my scarf. 10/10 will commit war crimes against the wildlife during the quiet apocalypse again
"Hold W and listen to male groan sound effects" simulator. That's seriously the bulk of the game. You're punished for sprinting, because sprinting with a heavy pack is unrealistic. Fair enough, but then make the hours of slow walking interesting. Managing hunger/water/energy/health bars gets really stale after the first few hours. Edit: Btw, watching a million progress bars fill up isn't realistic either. A decade in development and there are no animations for the actions you perform endlessly like opening cans, sewing, cleaning your rifle, etc? Far Cry 2 had more immersive animations for little mundane actions back in 2008. I picked this up on sale with no prior knowledge of it. I haven't been around for the decade of development and apparent delays/disappointments I read about. I jumped into this as a blank slate survival game enjoyer. This ain't it. I kinda see the vision, but the execution is lacking. There's a difference between survival mechanics that are brutal but satisfying to overcome, and survival mechanics that are endlessly tedious and make you suffer for suffering's sake. The story and atmosphere also take themselves way too seriously. I didn't need to poke that bear 12 separate times, and crawling around its den is not scary. Just tedious and boring, again. The only scary part of this game is the sprained ankle jumpscare you sometimes get even on a gentle slope. Not for me. Niche appeal for masochists.
I highly recommend the survival mode and the first three seasons of the campaign (Wintermute). Because I disliked the fifth season's story so much I'm going to say spoilers. I really want to recommend this game but the fourth and fifth (finale) seasons are so very poorly written and downright stupid at times in the cutscenes and decision making of the characters (especially their handling of the game's villain, Mathis and his cringe henchman). MacKenzie has SO MANY opportunities to save the innocent people of Great Bear from horrible deaths, torture, and destruction by justifiably killing Mathis and his henchmen (a homicidal, diabolical prisoner who takes over a penitentiary and gleefully burns down a schoolhouse full of innocent men, women, and children). Even some of the other "good" characters have this opportunity, but the game creators are removed so far from the reality of what has to be done in a world where justice now relies on the ability of good men who must commit deadly violence on those who would kill the innocent. The ending was the final nail in the coffin that left me annoyed. Mackenzie joins the bad guys' gang after a stupid scene where the guys demand a place in the bunker. To save the others (who were armed and easily could've killed Mathis yet again), MacKenzie tells them to close the doors (which they do) and Mathis, who was intent on killing MacKenzie if he didn't get his way, then decides "you're part of my gang now" and Mackenzie just accepts that.....wut? Gameplay itself is great, the various survival modes are SUPER FUN and engaging loose storylines, the brutal unforgiving force of nature makes a great challenge, the artwork of the game is downright amazing, awesome soundtrack that breathes so much life into the game, amazing voice actors who did incredibly well with a terrible script, resource gathering and crafting gives me goals to work toward, the amount of terrain to explore is immense, and I love those serene moments of sitting next to campfire under the Aurora Sky. If you play don't bother with the main story and you'll love everything else about this game.
