It immediately starts off slow with some reading, but stick with it for a few minutes and it’s a really cool game. There is going to be a decent amount of reading throughout, as it’s heavily story based, but the writing is good and the world is genuinely interesting. Unfortunately it can be a bit brutal at times as you don’t get to save ever.

If you like grindy games, and sorta spooky style, absolutely play this. Just don't expect to be good for a while.
The universe of Sunless sea and the concept behind it are fantastic. At first, it looked like a simple exploration game, but it quickly turns into a survival and resource management game filled with an incredibly rich story. It took me an embarrassingly long time to understand this and get a (slight) grip on how this game actually works. Graphically speaking, this top-down game is beautiful. The artwork is great, and the game’s use of light and shadow creates a truly unique, eerie atmosphere for this gothic world. The music, dreamy and dramatic at times, fits the game perfectly, adding an extra layer. Aside from exploration, the writing is the game’s other main pillar. The stories build around this world are well-written, very interesting and mysterious. Uncovering the secrets and variations will definitely take time. Here is where the game turns (in a way) into an interactive visual novel. Be prepared to read a lot; many actions unfold via text reading and then selecting among various options. Choices matter and influence the captain’s fate. However, the game is punishing. Its mechanics are build around the concept of perma-death; one wrong move and you’re back to square one. Although this can be enticing feature, it can feel very unfair. The captains will certainly die a lot. Repeating the death cycle over and over again can definitely increase one’s cortisol level and lead to frustration. Thankfully, the Legacy system facilitates your next run by passing down certain elements to the next captain. Still, expect a really slow progression; I haven’t even unlocked half of the map yet. That said, I do recommend the game. It has completely absorbed me for hours, constantly pushing me to explore further. It certainly won’t cater to every player, but it is well worth giving a chance to enjoy everything this game does right.

What a wonderful game. One of my favorites.
Quick review: If you don't mind a bit of reading, and you like an adventure where you venture into the deep, dark beyond, the game is great fun! A lot of the story/lore is in text form (accompanied by interesting soundscapes), which really encourages you to use your imagination. Honestly, with every single game nowadays trying its best to be as realisitic as possible, this is such a breath of fresh air - I'm genuinely excited to jump back in!
