Sadly the last in the Dark Forces / Jedi Knight series, Jedi Academy is a very fine Jedi-em-up set in the old Expanded Universe post-ROTJ, though some of its appeal for me is definitely nostalgic and the quirks of early 2000s PC action games might be harder to ignore or forgive for fans of cleaner, more modern games. The series finally moves away from fan-favourite mainstay character Kyle Katarn (don't worry, he's still here, just not the character we play as) and instead we play as Jaden Korr, a new trainee in Luke Skywalker's Jedi Order. As is the wont of the Star Wars galaxy however, a force of marauding Dark Siders has shown up and we're drafted in to help stop them. The story's basic, and some of the writing is a bit wonky mainly because there's the customary moral choice option of staying good or being a wrong 'un, but it has little effect beyond the ending. What is unquestionably great though is the lightsaber combat. There are few games that can boast quite as fun attempts at reproducing Star Wars' signature weapon as Jedi Academy; you've got a few forms of combat to pick from, you can opt for a saber staff or dual wield if you like, and there's even a ton of localised damage that can be done to limbs - especially if you play with the realistic saber mode on, which is obviously a hoot.
