I was not sure if I would like the game based on the videos/trailer, but it was actually quite enjoyable. I played in "story mode", so not too much grinding, your experience may vary!
Fun adventuring. Great visuals and the writing is well done to help establish a sense of place. I found it lite on the mechanics side, and I think Theft is overpowered, but still a neat little adventure.
I’m not entirely sure why *SKALD: Against the Black Priory* works so well for me, but it scratches an itch I didn’t even know I had. On paper, it looks like a deliberately old-school RPG: chunky visuals, turn-based combat, dark fantasy writing, and a lot of classic CRPG DNA. But once it clicks, it becomes much more than nostalgia. The atmosphere is oppressive in the best way, the world feels strange and hostile, and the game constantly gives you that “just one more area” feeling. It feels like the kind of RPG that rewards curiosity without wasting your time. The combat is readable, the exploration is satisfying, and the tone lands somewhere between grim fantasy, pulp adventure, and cosmic horror. It has personality, mood, and confidence. It doesn't feel cheap, its very purposeful in its retro esthetics. It's a good balance between depth and simplicity. Greatly recommended.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,402 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

I don't know why I was so hesitant to buy this game for so long, but it's become one of my favorites that I've played in a long time. The controls in combat can be a little wonky, but that's my only real complaint. It's a good story, and the world feels dark and foreboding. The characters are all well written, and no one seems out of place. Most modern games try to make characters too likeable, and it makes them seem more like modern inserts into a fantasy setting. I appreciate that Skald does not do this.
A truly engaging RPG that deserves a try. It was an impulse buy for me, but I wasn't disappointed. And you won't be either (if you can stomach the ancient graphics).
The ending was absolutely insane!! Great game I think more people should give it a chance
I'm loving this game's design and older CRPG style of gameplay. Especially on a sale, this game is totally worth the price, and the background music is amazing! It even runs on my cruddy laptop pretty well
uh ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesomesauce
After a few hours in this game....I am transported to my days playing Ultima on my C-64. If you miss RPG's with great writing and fun mechanics, this is it. Honestly, I'd rather read all the words here than listen to the voice acting on some other games, If you're a fan of old-school, or even tabletop party based games, this is for you!
Awesome retro inspired CRPG with stellar pixelart. My only gripe is that in combat you can easily missclick by accident which can really eff you up. A "one action rewind" would have helped a lot just for movement. HLTB has a bit too short times, expect 30h if you play on easy and read what characters have to say aka dont skip over dialogue. Story is linear but this is fine as its something you can digest and not a 250h monster like Pathfinder KM/WotR. Hope the dev gives another go at a different story!
