lots of replay-ability and mod prospects
I bought Sins of a Solar Empire 4 times in total. I own it on disc twice (once as the trilogy and once as rebellion), once on steam and once on GOG. Don't ask why I got the GOG version, I'm still not sure myself. My total playtime since the game came out in 2012 and I got my launch copy is much higher than the 120.4 hours indicated as of my writing this. This game is the apex of the old-school RTS genre, despite its flaws. It's scale is still unmatched by any other strategy game out there and while it's not the best platform for modding (due to all sorts of problems with 32 bit games and RAM limits) it still managed to be the basis of a huge number of awesome mods that are better than most games, including Star Trek Armada III (which is massively better either of the other games in the series!) The only thing that hasn't aged well is the controls, though I still like them. Protip: Use middle mouse to rotate and the scroll wheel to zoom in and out while treating the planets themselves like view anchor points, it works better than traditional panning controls do in this game. One thing I do want to point out: do not go into this expecting Stellaris. This is NOT a grand strategy game AT ALL. Sins of a Solar Empire is the bastard stepchild of Warcraft III and Supreme Commander while being better than both of those games. It is a straightforward mid-2000's to mid-2010s RTS set on a scale that is ludicrous by the standards of that era, but diplomacy is not a focus of this game. This is a game where you build ships and stations and use them to crush your opponents, and while the Advent definitely seem like they are meant to do diplomacy things, it plays out more like a control deck in a card game. You build things that stop your opponents from being able to attack you or claim your planets. Don't let that dissuade you though. Sins of a Solar Empire is a classic and can run on a glorified potato. If you haven't played Sins, you need to.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

do you want to carefully manage the vast intricacies of an expansive empire's economy, diplomacy and cultural direction, searching for the hidden treasures of space? then move on. because everything thing here is in service to fielding a colossal fleet of advanced warships with diverse abilities all with one goal. to wipe your enemies from the galaxy as you hunt down enemy fleets and bomb their planets with a fervor that would make 40k players blush. all without the dramatic cinematics that should accompany it. games last so long that civilization 5 games seem non-commital in comparison. and i loved every single bit of it.
I bought this game in a target in 2008 for $7, back when it was a single CD, since then I hop on it every so often when I want a game to turn my brain off and have passive fun, while SOSE2 is out and many people may prefer the updated graphics and no late game lag, SOSE1 is still a solid game, it also has one of the best modding groups out there who supply mods that make modern RTS games look like a sad joke, if you care about what I have to say then please buy this game it is alot of fun and will bring you many hours of entertainment.
Oldy but very goody - tight, polished, intense wargame. Almost no fluff, yet still enough of strategic and tactical depth to keep the player on edge. One more hidden advantage - it's a very portable game as it runs nearly on everything today, so you one can play it on an office-level laptop when travelling.
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is one of those games that I keep coming back to years after first playing it. On paper, it sounds like a fairly straightforward space RTS: build your empire, research technologies, expand across planets, build fleets and eventually crush whoever stands in your way. In practice, there is a surprising amount of depth hiding underneath that simple formula. What I love most is the scale. You aren't controlling a handful of ships in a small battlefield — you're managing an entire space empire while huge fleets move between planets, pirates harass your territory, allies make demands, and enemies are constantly looking for an opening. You can spend several minutes quietly developing your economy and technology, only for everything to suddenly explode into a massive fleet battle. The combat is probably the biggest reason I keep returning to it. Watching capital ships and enormous fleets clash is incredibly satisfying, especially when you've spent half the match building that fleet. Capital ships feel important rather than disposable, and leveling them up gives you another reason to care about individual units. Eventually you start developing your own favorite combinations and strategies, and that's where the game becomes really addictive. The three main factions also do a good job of making different playstyles feel meaningful. They're not just different colors with slightly different units. Their technologies, abilities and overall approaches to warfare encourage you to play them differently. Add diplomacy, research, planetary bonuses, artifacts and the various economic systems on top of that, and there is a lot to learn. And then there are the mods. The modding community is honestly one of the biggest reasons this game has survived for so long. There are some absolutely fantastic total conversions and gameplay mods available, and Sins of the Prophets is probably the first one I'd mention to anyone who is a Halo fan. Being able to turn this already massive space strategy game into something resembling a large-scale Halo naval war is ridiculous in the best possible way. If you enjoy experimenting with mods, this game can easily become a completely different experience from the base game. It's also surprisingly easy to keep playing. You start a match thinking you'll play for an hour, then suddenly you're looking at the clock wondering where the last five hours went. Larger maps can become especially insane. By the late game there can be so many ships, structures and systems interacting that the battlefield feels like an actual war rather than a conventional RTS match. There are some downsides, though. The biggest one is that this game absolutely does not hold your hand. The interface can feel overwhelming when you first start, and there are a lot of systems competing for your attention. If you're completely new to 4X or grand strategy games, expect to spend some time figuring out what everything does. The first few matches can feel more like studying than playing. There's also no traditional campaign. The factions have interesting lore and there are plenty of things I'd love to know more about, but the game basically gives you the setting and then tells you to go make your own war. Personally, I've grown to appreciate that sandbox approach, but I can definitely understand why someone looking for a story-driven RTS might be disappointed. The AI isn't perfect either, and extremely large battles can still become demanding. Some matches can take an absurdly long time to finish, particularly on larger maps when several players are still alive. But honestly, those issues haven't stopped me from coming back. That's ultimately what makes Rebellion special to me. It doesn't need a cinematic campaign or a complicated narrative structure to keep me interested. The matches themselves create their own stories. One game you might be peacefully expanding your economy, another might turn into a desperate defensive war, and another might end with an enormous fleet crashing into an enemy homeworld after hours of preparation. It's an old game at this point, but it has aged remarkably well. It runs on relatively modest hardware, has a ridiculous amount of replayability, works great both solo and with friends, and the modding scene adds practically another lifetime of content. If you like space strategy, RTS games, large-scale fleet battles or games where you can lose an entire evening without realizing it, this is still an easy recommendation. And if the base game eventually starts feeling familiar, install some mods. That's where the rabbit hole really begins.
