Truly a marvelous work, one that stays with you for a long time. The visual style, the narrative, the characters, the music, the whole game is a collection of incredibly well done and lovingly crafted parts. The memory shaping mechanic itself is handled in a unique and interesting way, with variety in the gameplay that makes it not monotonous. Again, the characters are fantastic, each one recognizable, with unique personalities, narrative arcs, very well handled interactions, I'd say that's what stands out the most about this game. What I can't say, sadly, is that it's a masterpiece, since among the variety of gameplays that one finds, the truth is that several of these changes are not very entertaining, either because they are very simple, burdensome to require going around the same places just for the sake of it, or boring because of how long they get to be. It is much better to play it without knowing much, it has unexpected twists and surprises at a very good pace, I really recommend it, an immersive and unforgettable adventure (made in Argentina) that I would like more people to know.

I played the demo and loved it. I saw other reviews warn that gameplay changes halfway through, but I didn't give them enough heed. So let me be more explicit. Chapters 1-4 use the fun mechanic of making choices to change the narrative. Then chapter 5 is a massive, tedious labyrinth of sneaking past guards with flashlights. Chapter 6 was narrative (no complaints from me, actually). Then chapter 7 was more sneaking past guards with flashlights in an annoying switch puzzle labyrinth. And you have to do it 3 times for all 3 possible characters. All in all, I think it took me about 2 hours for chapters 1-4, 1 hour for chapter 5, and 1 hour for chapter 7. So I beat the whole game in 4 hours. And I will never play it again because of chapters 5 and 7. Oh and also, the game just completely drops several plot lines. No explanations or tie-ins. The one resolution you get is pretty satisfying, but otherwise it feels like very little gets explained. The game had good potential, but it felt massively padded with tedious sneaking sections, and the ending felt lacking. Only recommended if you have high tolerance for stealth puzzles.
Well. This is one of those games that makes me wish for a "neutral" recommended option on steam. RE:CALL is not a bad game, far from it, but... It's not quite a "good" game either. The concept is great! Well. Starts great. The first half of the game handles it fairly well, and explores it quite a bit. The second half, becomes a slog. The usage of the core mechanic, the namesake of the game, is barely even present in the second half of the game. They try exploring other ideas... but those wind up being shallow, and underdeveloped. Furthermore, the puzzle design combined with the gameplay design, leaves some things to be desired; the nature of the game is such that, well, you WILL be repeating some actions, quite a bit. And unfortunately, this takes time. Not much, mind you-- they at least had the foresight to speed it up, but... Repetition adds up. combined with the relatively slow movement speed of the characters... It all just served to make it feel more and more like a slog. Last to mention, the story: It's not bad. It's not great. It's honestly, not really fleshed out, unfortunately: It feels like they tried to play it out into some almost grand conspiracy being foiled but... Well, they didn't have the time, nor resources, nor ideas, to create such a thing in actuality. So it feels shallow, undeveloped, like there's ideas left on the cutting room floor, doomed to be forgotten: We get what may be a peek into a world which was likely far greater when the writers created it, but ultimately had to get pared down for the sake of an actual release. TL;DR: The game isn't bad, just not great; the core idea is interesting & fun, but the game becomes a slog about halfway through. Story isn't earning any awards. Pick it up if you liked the demo, but only if it's on sale.
2/10 not my kinda of game
I really love this game, the music is great, the artstyle is fun and so is the game play. But the ending felt underbaked so did the whole story I wish it was longer than it was. I got soft locked a few times and had the game run into errors which was interesting. I can't justify the £16 price tag (I got it in a humble bundle), maybe wait for a sale. But I would really recommend picking it up!
The first chapter was fantastic, I really enjoyed the use of choose-your-own-adventure type history manipulation, and was looking forward to seeing it deployed more to tell the story. Unfortunately, it goes downhill from there. I came close to bailing during chapter 5 with all the tediously long electric barrier stealth sections, but managed to get through. A few minutes into chapter 7, and we're back to running past guards and standing on floor switches to deactivate barriers. Which we're gonna have to do for each character. I presume I'm close to the end, and I want to see how the story goes, but I can't bring myself to drag us through that pointless padding content.
Its a fine puzzle game, but it needs two small improvements: - Any codes you are given should be automatically recorded in a journal or something. Its annoying to pause, do something else, and then be screwed because you can't remember the code and the game's dialog won't tell you anymore. - For the two-person remote control sections, let the right stick move the other person so you can move both at the same time. Its really obnoxious to have to inch along both characters when moving together would be much faster.
The game where you gaslight everyone.
My Experience
RE:CALL is a puzzle game where you navigate levels and interact with objects for the most part. Often in the present you're being questioned or interrogated, and have to recall events in a way that directly affects the present. Starting, I had some funny issues on 2k resolution. Some guide text at the top or bottom of the screen stays there when it really should be out of frame lol. It's nothing that affects gameplay so it's fine. There's no audio options, controls are simple and straightforward, and there is an option to thankfully disable some visual effects. They can get tiring to look at after a while. Art and presentation is very charming, very cartoony, just generally fun character designs and funny names too. Love it. The puzzle structure is mostly trial and error. You try different things to come to figure out different pieces of the puzzle, that lead to other steps, up until you find that exact "path" that leads to the solution of the chapter. Some puzzles are pretty logical. In one puzzle I noticed something in the environment, and realized that a certain event there occurs after I make a choice relating to the time of day. But in another puzzle, I apparently had to change the color of a picture in the past so the solution appears in the present, then use that knowledge to solve a puzzle in the past. There's no explicit objective reminders or anything of the sorts, so I suggest to spare an hour or so when you want to play through a chapter so you don't forget what you were meant to do lol. The start of the game was pretty great, it had a strong story hook and fun gameplay, but unfortunately it doesn't manage to maintain that energy to the end. By the final chapter, it felt like I was playing a very different game with a bunch of stealth sections and simple navigation puzzles, and it stretched on for so long, it felt awfully tedious. As for the story, I went in with little expectations, but the mystery hooked me in quickly. Halfway through it some plot elements that were introduced didn't feel like they add much, and just end up leading nowhere or not feel rewarding or interesting. The characters are surprisingly memorable and distinct and just plainly are funny and entertaining. Even though they come off as archetypes of cartoon characters you've probably seen before, there's still something unique about them.
Conclusion
So, all things considered, I do recommend it! But only on sale. I did enjoy the gameplay, the story, the characters, the presentation, but that last stretch of the game put a bad taste in my mouth. The game overall kinda falls off after a strong start, but I still believe it's worth checking out.
