Excellent game which makes it all the more frustrating that it's AN UTTER CRASHFEST
Have you heard the term - "If it ain't broke, Don't fix it"? Well it WAS a great game, I have a few hours played..... but then the "Firebird Update" happens and now all the things I enjoyed about the game are gone..... Mods - get fuc'ed those are gone.... literally the ONLY reason I pay this game and not the hot garbage that is Xenonauts is that this game was damn near perfect.. Great unmolested game made better by the community, then just like every other developer..... since you know everything is going great lets just fuc things up because we can. TFTV was a great "MOD" or add on.... if you like it you can play it, but they imported a bunch of stuff from it and FORCED it into the base game.... now everything is messed up and the Geoscape doesn't function correctly.... Cant use my mods anymore, changed the base game to a piece of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥...... Shoulda just left well enough alone, you have a 9/10 game.... now its not worth playing.....

This game is fantastic. More complicated overworld management of multiple bases than games like XCOM or XCOM2, without the rush of a count down timer at the top of your screen putting you on a clock and forcing you to take certain missions. In Phoenix Point, you determine how to take the fight to the enemy, which factions you're going to boost, or which factions you'll see crushed because of your irreconcilable differences. The advancement of your troops is fair, and enemies have nuance. Learning the weaknesses of each enemy and focusing your fire appropriately (not just kill order, but targeting and disabling limbs, weapons, abilities, etc.) becomes crucial. As you understand the enemy you face, your ability to deal with them increases. This is the biggest variable in each combat, which treats you as the player as the ultimate arbiter of the efficacy of your troops. I haven't beaten it yet, and I've been playing the TFTV mod which was highly recommended. If you were a fan of XCOM and XCOM2, this game has a lot of things that are familiar, with new mechanics that make it an engaging and interesting spiritual successor.

So many tiny little things about this game makes it impossible to enjoy. The most disgusting (yes, disgusting) thing is having to wait for this astonishingly dumb AI engine to process movement and attacks. Oh my god is it disgusting. Those clowns will move, stand idle for 2 sec, shoot, stand idle for a sec, turn around.... something will happen off camera, you'll hear one of your soldiers get hit, and like 1 second after the shot he'll shout "ah !!!", then some clown enemy will stand idle for 3 sec, go kill some civilian, break a window, stand idle for 1 sec........ And YES I set the animation speed to VERY FAST in this TRASH OF A GAME. On the geoscape, I spent countless hours/days waiting for my radar arrays to extend their scanning range to actually have anything to do at all in this incredibly poorly made trash of a game. Some insultingly useless events where happening halfway across the globe "HEY WE NEED HELP" but guess what this TRASH of a ship can't even get there. And yes, I built a 2nd base early with radar to scan for explorable nodes. But nope, it was so boring I resorted to RAID a surrounding haven, and after that I couldn't even raid other havens because of "Threat Level". So I kept waiting for nodes to show up, but it was taking forever because THIS GAME IS TRASH. I have absolutely no idea how a dev team can let this TRASH in that state for more than ZERO SECOND. Also the gear and items are BORING AS ♥♥♥♥. Every single battle is an exact copy of the previous one aside of envionment (biome/buildings/obstacles). It always plays out the same. With the popular mod "Terror from the Void", I picked Hero difficulty and sadly it wasn't more fun. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Watch some clown shoot at you 3 times while taking a 1 second pause between each shot. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. TOSS A NADE. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Watch some clown shoot at you 2 times while taking a 2 second pause between each shot. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Hear some clown steal 10 seconds of your lifetime to go kiil a civilian off camera. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. MEDKIT ! Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Move, shoot and/or overwatch. Watch some clown shoot at you while taking a 2 second pause between each shot. I bought this game on a 60% rebate and I WANT TO PUKE.
I'm sure you're looking at this game because you're a huge fan of XCOM 2. If you're looking to scratch that itch, this will work for a little bit. If you buy it on sale, the price isn't bad. I played a few of the DLC, but in some ways they make things harder instead of easier. This game has a lot of issues or aspects that aren't enjoyable. The game has almost no real score or background music, and what it does have is very repetitive. The time it takes your troops and enemies to move is frustratingly long. I played the game for 80 hours and feel like I didn't come close to finishing the game. Any sense of fun I got from this game left long ago. My recommendation: skip this one and get Star Wars: Zero Company when it comes out.
Phoenix Point is made by the people who made the original XCOM. Thank god they didn't make the remake (or the sequel). There's absolutely zero immersion in this game, no sense of urgency, no 'enemy' that you're trying to beat. It's a cloud. With the XCOM remakes there was always a sense that you were the ones, it was down to you to save the world and if you failed the world would be overrun. In PP you're instantly introduced to 3 other factions who are all doing pretty well themselves, and you're the guys playing catchup. The missions themselves feel and look like you're playing a strategy version of Fortnite. People running round with giant hammers for example. And there's basically no emotional investment into these characters. Relatively quickly you build out a large force with multiple teams going to locations around the world. So you'll probably end up quite quickly with 15-20+ characters with more on the bench ready to go. If someone dies, meh, sub in someone else. In XCOM (remakes), you'd have like 5-6 go-to team members and restart a whole mission because you've lost one. There's an investment there into your team and their abilities. In PP the team members are completely expendable, you have tonnes of them. I would easily recommend the XCOM remake and it's sequel over this.
So far, this is my favorite game. I played it throughout the entire Christmas holiday period and enjoyed every hour of it. What really stands out is the huge variability and freedom of action, there are many viable ways to build squads, and develop your strategy. The game offers a lot of smart mechanics and gameplay features that keep it deep, challenging, and replayable rather than repetitive. Another big plus is that the developers continue to update the game regularly, improving balance, adding features, and polishing the overall experience. You can really feel that the game is alive and supported. And the coolest part for me personally: it runs on macOS. Native support on Mac is rare for games of this depth and scale, and here it works smoothly and reliably. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys tactical, thoughtful, and flexible strategy games.
Tried to like it, but its not for me. Came expecting a similar experience to XCOM, but the differences such as the new overwatch. The base/faction management and heavy RNG were not for me
