I purchased this game because the designer was the creator of the original XCOM series and he didn't disappoint. The style of play, flying missions with a squad of individual soldiers to achieve objectives that ultimately reach a final conclusion or in this game many lesser objectives leading to greater objectives and then the final conclusion is great fun. The biggest twist is not a bout which objectives to do first and next, but how to allocate resources to your team. There are many interesting options in that, weapons, ships, vehicals and more and I had to play this many times before I could comfortably win without needing some tech that I couldn't afford after buying too much of the wrong thing. Needless to say, the learning curve is steep and challenging. The style is new enough and diferent enough, that its a gamers game, I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner. There are some minor issues none that lead to a crash and one show stopper that made it impossible to re-equip your troops which forced me to restart the game from the begining. This happens when you scrap old equipment from the equip troop screen. Somehow the inventory equpiment count goes negative even when the screen shows equipment in the store. once it does, it will nolonger allow you to equip or unequip your troops. The work around, don't do that. If you really need to scrap equipment you have a second method in the manufactoring screen that seems to work fine. I recommend this game to all experienced gamers, enjoy.

Do not paly Phoenix point vanilla, it has problems and I never finished it. Terror from the Void; is an expansion, which is a complete reworking of the whole game. It is a brilliant. It's easily as good as XCOM2. war of the chosen, which I have played several times. But with a lot more depth and better balance.
I was lucky enough to buy it when it was a bit more polished, and not at what I heard was a pretty bumpy release. I enjoy it! It's hard to recapture the lighting in the bottle that was X-COM. One super small detail is that the soldiers feel impersonal as they always have a helmet on. Otherwise, interesting mechanics (multi-classes, single bullet trajectories, aiming), different enough from other games in the genre to make it unique. If you liked stuff like X-COM or tactical wizards I'd definitely give it a try!
I'm going to vote yes on this but I really wish the developer had given me the option to turn off the wave attacks on my bases. I tried twice to start this game and both times I was overwhelmed because I can't figure out what I need to do to finish the campaign although I was able to hold them off longer the second time. I played for 76.9 hours so I obviously did have fun but I feel frustrated that I can't finish the game. I think I'm going to go on to other games that are easier and not bother with a third attempt.
Base game is mid. Get the DLCs and play with TFTV. You won't regret it.
I am not particularly good at games, but I do like a challenge sometimes. With my level of skill its certainly a challenge. Have yet to beat the game, there is an awful lot to keep track of, so if you have good organisational skills you will probably really enjoy this. I am on my 4th playthrough with only a moderate chance of final success. If I cannot do it on this run-through, its mod time! Excellent game, very engaging, but maybe could use an easier mode than 'Rookie', Novice maybe?
I bought this game specifically so I could review it and refund it, because i palyed it through Family Sharing originally. Imagine you took all the QoL stuff out of XCOM, then ♥♥♥♥♥♥ the balance of enemies, and the writing sucked. What QoL of life stuff? Well the Overwatch button works, but half assed and only sometimes. Your troops stare at an enemy as they unload into the guy next to them, the GIANT ORANGE CONE clearly hitting them, buuuut nothing happens. No % to hit either, for some reason, maybe they removed it to make it less frustrating? I dont know but clicking fire on an enemy and missing is the problem, not knowing the % to hit. There isnt an "Objective" journal either, just a list of objectives you can click on and itll bring you to that objective, instead of a recap of everything you know so far and THEN a button to tell you where it is. You have an ENTIRE WIKIPEDIA IN GAME and not a single one dedicated to all the missions you've done/are doing?? Maybe there is, I couldnt find it. No way to sort the different items outside of class and type, which was frustrating because now I have to manually compare (also no compare button) each armor piece to figure out which one I want on what troop. The 2 characters at the beginning are uncustomizable, despite seeming to have absolutely no impact on the story, you could have just made one or both of them Commander style figures, who dont actually fight. On balance, at first it seems fine, give the melee only enemies a decent HP pool, TONS of melee damage, and super fast speed. Theeeen they completely screw the pooch by giving them guns. Not flesh guns, no, REAL GUNS, specifically, the SAME GUNS YOU'RE USING, but somehow more accurate, with more shots, and they do more damage. Then they add in the Forsaken, which SHOULD be the faction that was just Pandorans but with guns, but no, they're just normal humans, but with WAY bigger health pools and armor. Fighting enemies also feels like a CHORE. In XCOM it always felt like your troops died if you were stupid, unprepared, or not paying attention. In this one it feels like you really dont have a choice, Overwatch barely functions, enemies can snipe you from just about anywhere, cover really feels like it mitigates their chance to hit by about 20% at MOST, and the only way I could progress was by VERY slowly moving forward, baiting enemies into a 3 man Overwatch (2 of which would miss/not activate) and hope he doesnt get close enough to cut one of my guys in half next turn. Also why did you give the HEAVY WEAPONS GUY a jetpack? I literally can skip all the retrieve supplies missions cause jetpack. Also encumbrance seems to do nothing. Oh, and what wonderful factions we have! There's "Generic Uber Rich Guy Faction", which is obviously the writers least favorite faction, then there's the "Weird Cthulu Cult" which is there because they have to be, and the "Writers Not at All Disguised Favorite Faction", where ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rainbows and World Peace is a very real possibility if ONLY those mean Uber Rich ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ over there would stop being so mean and Uber Rich!! Seriously every interaction written between these factions is "New Jericho does something, Synderion shakes its head and wishes for peace, Anu ignores them both". The writing is so weak, I went ahead and looked up the endings because ♥♥♥♥ I'm not slogging through another few hours of this, and Synderion has the only REAL ending, the Cult copies their ending, and Jericho just nukes the supposed location of the Pandorans boss from low orbit. Real hard to tell which of these are the "Good" ending.
I keep trying to get into this game, but god the clunk just feels frustrating to the point I just uninstall. It mostly comes down to the actual aim mechanics for attacking, which winds up being XCOM but the game just feels like it lies to you. On your turn it does feel satisfying and intuitive for the most part. 100% of your shots land in the outer ring while 50% will land in the inner ring. Then you find a door or corner that your trooper can't seem to figure out how to look around even though they were JUST SHOT FROM THAT ANGLE. The enemy confirmed has a LOS to your trooper but you can't shoot back? Now when the enemies fire at you this feels awful. Cover just feels cosmetic since again its that ring on ring system when you take a shot. But the kicker is you never see how the shot get its line up. Ive been hit through cracks in boxes by snipers landing head shots. Where my units cant seem to hit the broad side of a barn and if they do it tickles, their enemy sniper can hit multiple times in a row without issue. Overwatch also suffers from that first issue. Making it super inconsistent and now adding a minor delay on activation makes it easy to just wiff the shot. The AI also seems to always know just how you set up your overwatch cones as they will instantly side step around it. Meanwhile the game seems to have poor tools to deal with hostile overwatches. Where frags, smokes and suppression helps in XCOM, in PP they seem to either trigger the shot or just not do anything.
Got the game 2.5 years ago, didn't like it (played too long for a refund). Tried again and still didn't like it. The gameplay loop just doesn't feel right. Explore for resources, get too many materials but never enough tech. Too many research options that take way too long to get and are mostly filler for +10% damage on a worm that you can one shot. Line of sight based previews for who I can shoot doesn't really work when I move my guy and, yeah I could shoot the guy, but the only thing to shoot is his shoulder. It tried to be xcom and missed the mark for me, I want to give tftw a try but I'm just so over this game.
