After 139 hours playing a SINGLE playthrough of this game, I must give it a NO. It is one of the most unbalanced games I have ever played. It had its moments where I had fun, but those were vastly outweighed by the hours where I was constantly frustrated by the mechanics of the game, by the pacing of the game, by the lack of clear direction in the game, by the lack of knowing how to get research projects, by the Gate Keeping of most research behind the 3 factions (i.e. you have to befriend the obstinate factions to research a great deal of things to research or steal ONE research topic from a Haven each mission), by the lack of direction in HOW to acquire the Ancient weapons and then build them (what's up with no Ancient Assault weapon varieties and no Ancient Armor, whatever), by the lack of ability to manufacture many of the important resources in the game (i.e. tech and materials), by the purposeful design to make the game HARD even on Veteran difficulty! And why was the game HARD? Because the developers were not happy with how "easy" it was to beat the game when first released 6 years ago. That's what some reviews have pointed out. So, in subsequent DLC releases they "balanced" it. What they did was make the game noticeably LONGER to play through one Playthrough, more tedious, and as a result very uninspiring overall. This game has been compared to XCom multiple times because of the obvious similarities. I won't go into those comparisons as they were covered years ago by others. But, as one who played ALL of the original XCOM games of the 90's and LOVED them and who played BOTH iterations of the new XCOM games and LOVED those, it is a shame that these developers couldn't capture that magic! I did not love this game and barely liked any of it in spite of the 139 hours invested in it. I really have no desire to play a 2nd playthrough. I'm not one who is into masochism, although I feel like I had nearly 139 hours of a masochist session!!

FWIW: I'm writing this as someone who hasn't played X-com, so I'm probably not the target audience. It's a tedious game. Sometimes the combat is decent but overall it just throws too many roadblocks at you to be fun. Most routine missions have semi-random layouts and objective locations. These maps don't have any forcing momentum and often causes boring situations. Sometimes enemies spawn right next to the thing you're supposed to protect and you're on the . Civilians you're supposed to protect don't show up on radar. A single weak enemy goes into stealth and can't be found dragging out the mission for turns. The map is LONG and you need to walk all the way top the other end to grab a thing and then walk ALL THE WAY BACK with long AI turns and multiple party members. The game features an overworld that you'll spend a lot of time in. You have to slowly expand your reach exploring node by node, activating bases rather than just going from story mission to story mission. You constantly have to go help NPC factions if you don't want your gameover timer to accelerate and get optimal faction rep. Que up some research and build timers. Go do a mission and then queue up some more research and build timers. I get the developers were going for a feeling of "You can't do everything, choose carefully" but it ends up feeling more like a time-gated list of chores. Inventory system UI is annoying. You have to match ammunition to the specific weapon equipped but the game doesn't grab the right ammo for you; you have to search through your inventory for the right AMMO type of dozens of items in your inventory and equip it manually. Ugh. The combat is usually fine but not good enough to make suffering through the rest worth it.
After years of being my favorite game, they gave a free update that broke it and it isn't working anymore on my device.
There's a good tactics game in here and I had fun with it for a while. The aimed-shot targeting system is a real idea and hitting a specific limb to disable a weapon is satisfying. But it got repetitive fast, and two systems never made sense to me: inventory management is a chore with an interface that fights you, and the global strategic layer never clearly communicated what I was supposed to be doing or why. I stopped without finishing and didn't feel any pull to go back.

Was a backer originally - then the "Epic store" fiasco happened. Refunded my backing. Decided to finally get this on sale to see if it was any good... not worth the wait. Frustrating and unbalanced in areas.
I wanted to like this game. I loved XCOM and as a result had high expectations for this game, and maybe that is my own fault. However, in the end I didn't particularly find Phoenix Point to be enjoyable. It has some similarities to XCOM, and some small merits, but ultimately I didn't really care for the story, the characters, or any of the gameplay elements. If you really love turn based strategy and are looking for something like XCOM without the research arms race you might enjoy this. But personally I didn't really like it.
