About
Hey folks, Jason Rohrer here. After 8+ years of existence, the Discord server had devolved into a very unfriendly, negative, and drama-filled place. It had gotten to the point where I didn't even like stepping foot in there myself, and every time I did, I regretted it. I considered just closing it down entirely.
I recently took some very big steps toward cleaning it up, appointing a new outside moderator (a personal friend from real life who has a very level head), and banning anyone who was continuing to be unfriendly and negative (including some of the old moderators, some of whom who had become ringleaders of negativity and personal attacks).
Of course, the people who got banned are upset, and (surprise!) they are review bombing the game.
But it's pretty amazing: in just one day, the Discord server is already much more calm and friendly and positive. I'm sure game sales will be temporarily affected by this review bomb.... but... well... something had to be done.
Thank you for taking a look at One Hour One Life anyway, which is a deeply personal game that I sunk my heart and soul into.

Hey folks, I'm Jason Rohrer, and I spent more than 6 years making One Hour One Life. I did everything myself---I drew all the graphics on paper with pens and markers, I coded the entire engine from scratch, I composed and performed all of the music*, and I even made all of the sound effects. It's a very personal game, and it's really unlike anything else that's out there. It's also a huge game---over 4,400 fully interactive, craftable objects and over 2,400 hand-drawn sprites. The game was initially released on my own website in February of 2018 and then later that year on Steam. Over next few years, I released 154 weekly updates as I aimed for my goal of making the largest, most comprehensive crafting game in history.
Okay, so what about the game itself?
First of all, you only live for an hour, where each minute marks a passing year. You join the game server as a newborn baby, and some other randomly-chosen player is your mother. You depend on her for your survival. And why will she be willing to waste her valuable time and resources to keep you alive? Because she's going to die in an hour just like everyone else, and if she wants what she accomplishes in her lifetime to have any meaning, then the next generation (aka, you) is her only hope. And if you survive into adulthood, you may get the chance to have babies of your own---other players, just joining the server---and those babies will be the next generation that gives meaning to your own life accomplishments.
Across this ever-growing family tree of generations, players are collectively conducting an enormous project: they are rebuilding civilization from scratch. The online game world starts out as a near-infinite expanse of wilderness (four billion meters wide from east to west, and four billion meters wide from north to south, with a total surface area of over 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 square meters, or 36,000 times bigger than Earth). The very first player to join the server is Eve, and she starts out in the wilderness as the root of the family tree. Eve and her immediate offspring lay the foundation for the future civilization, perhaps making a few primitive tools, cooking basic foods, and starting a small farm as they scrape out a meager existence before dying. Future generations will build on this primitive foundation, eventually mastering more and more advanced technology, including domesticated animals, metal working, permanent buildings, engines, transportation networks, photography, electronics, and even interplanetary travel.
But as real-life history has shown, civilization is fragile. A generation that is born into the lap of luxury---on the backs of their ancestors' hard-won accomplishments---can just as easily squander their inheritance as build upon it. Key resources run out over time, so careful management, planning, and organization are necessary to prevent an inevitable collapse. Thus, the game graduates from the individual challenge of primitive survival in the early stages to a group organizational and leadership challenge in the later stages. How do rules and procedures for group survival propagate across multiple generations? What did our great grandparents have in mind for this village?
The main mode in the game involves being born as a helpless baby to another player as your mother, but you can also play with your friends as twins, triplets, or quadruplets. One baby is hard enough to take care of---any mother that can successfully take care of quadruplets deserves the eternal gratitude of you and your friends.
All of this is happening on my own centrally-managed, persistent servers, and your purchase includes a lifetime account on these official servers. After you buy the game, you can instantly connect to this world with no configuration or server set-up. It all just works. You also get access to the full source code, including the server code. Technically-minded folks can run their own private servers, or even use the powerful content editor to make their own mods.
And once you master interplanetary travel in the game, you will gain access to Another Hour Another Planet, which features an alien world where all game elements and artwork are made entirely by the community.
I hope you'll join us as this sprawling civilization-building experiment continues to unfold. Many tens of thousands of players have already collectively lived over 3.7 million hours in this endlessly-changing world so far. Over the life of the game, he average playtime for each player has been 22 hours, with over 1100 players logging over 500 hours each.
No two lives are ever the same, and a new story always awaits on the other side of the [GET REBORN] button.

I very very very very need Chinese , you no???
So simple, yet so entertaining. Most people are very helpful for new players, and it feels very rewarding right of passage passing your knowledge onto other newbies.
I remember playing this game 4, almost 5 years ago and finally experiencing one of those cool truly original concept games you used to find as a kid on Youtube. But once I had finally got my hands on it years after its prime when I used to see roleplaying youtube playthroughs it was a fun time, but... empty. Even back in early 2022 this game was dying. That's the unfortunate fact of nearly every multiplayer game, especially if it never accrues a large enough playerbase to sustain it and help it survive even after most people leave. I remember interacting with other players in the game was fun and it was an experience I would've recommended even though it didn't hold my interest better than the handful of other games I decided to play over this one at the time. I can't comment on the current situation around the dev being an awful person because I haven't looked deeply enough into it. But the game seems well and truly dead. And unfortunately, because of the lack of community support and negativity surrounding what once was I think its better to spend your money elsewhere. P.S. I know I saw "Another Hour Another Life" on steam that seems like it looks to continue the game, but the progress isn't looking promising. So here's hoping we get a true SPIRTUAL successor to one day bring back the unique concept that is One Hour One Life

The negative reviews are written by Zionists attempting to ruin the life of a reasonable genius who happens to be a Goy. The game is fantastic. I was one of the first people to play this game. I just jumped in to see what has changed, and the community is literally the best community from any game ever made. This is the only game I know where you are immediately dependant on another player. It's the only game I know where people consistently help each other out. Every single playthough of this game is an incredible social experience, it's social by design, as it's impossible to progress alone. This game is brilliant and the people review bombing it are genocidal psychopaths who could never design a game even if it was promised to them 3000 years ago
It's sooo fun! I was quite a few people. Eve. I started a whole town. Plus, the people are awesome. 10/10! Recommend it very much!
Solid game. Dont mind the crybabies.
This might be the craziest game I've ever played. You get born to players who happen to be playing a female character and they have to choose to pick you up and feed you or you die. You only survive your first couple minutes if they pick you up when you're hungry (female characters picking you up feeds you). Then you, and your entire family of players who started the same way, have literally nothing unless you progress through the tech tree (which you don't have enough time to do yourself) as generations of people. You start with a sharpened stone, and foraging for barely viable nutrition in the form of wild plants. You can make string, into rope, into potentially a stick with string tied on it, and then you get old and die. Next life your great great grandchildren may have eventually invented a ho and agriculture at large, so food isn't as much of a worry, but when you're born you have to be taught what they learned about farming, or making rubber, or clothing. Eventually you will teach others who are new to the reincarnation cycle that they have to say F when they're hungry as babies because they start only being able to say one letter. Eventually they'll be old and teaching others about hunting. It took me a while to get into this game, but honestly the live play with other players are where its at. The gameplay loop of the tutorial is helpful, but also boring as hell. You gotta just get in there and have someone teach you. 10/10 game. I only wish wasd worked for nav.
this game is honestly just depressing to play.
To my mom "She taught me everything except how to say goodbye." I spawned into the world as a helpless, crying baby. Another player—a complete stranger—(MOM) picked me up, named me Leon, and fed me. She spent her entire life keeping me warm, teaching me how to farm, and showing me where the water was. As I finally grew old enough to work and help her, she suddenly stopped moving. She looked at me and typed her final words: 'I about to die son, you, my beautiful son. Keep the fire alive.' Then, her character collapsed into a skeleton. She spent her whole 60-minute life making sure I survived, but she didn't teach me how to live in this massive, quiet world without her. I love u mom This game can be sooo wholesome and sad at the same time yet very challenging to learn, i just wish a voice chat system was implanted
