About

The year is 198X, and you're a jobbing composer. You start out with nothing but a toy keyboard shaped like a tiger, and a brand new sequence-o-matic 4-track that your uncle bought from a shady geezer in the pub.
Word quickly spreads about the new producer on the block, and soon the commissions are rolling in. Things start humble, recording tracks for weddings, workout videos and corporate presentations, but before long you're getting asked to score fantasy movies, museum openings, and all kinds of crazy stuff.
Of course, you'll have to upgrade your kit along the way. Turns out, the local second-hand magazine is a treasure trove of objects that make interesting sounds, from singing garden gnomes and shredders-that-shred-sound-as-well-as-paper, to high-end synthesisers and musical effects. By the end, you'll have figured out a sound that's all your own.

But OFFBEAT isn't just a game. All the musical instruments are fully simulated, and the music you're recording is real. The game is secretly a complete audio production tool. Every piece of music you create in the game gets exported and saved locally on your computer as a WAV file, which you can use for whatever you want.
Music production can be costly and complex to get into, especially for beginners. We created OFFBEAT to lower barrier to entry and to offer a playful, low-pressure way to learn the basics of audio producion. The goal is just to be expressive and experimental, but by the end you'll have learned a little about synthesizers, sound design, composition and recording. Our hope is that when the game's finished, you'll have the confidence and expertise to carry on composing and recording music.

its good
This is too much fun

This game perfectly joins the cozy nature of an old school aesthetic game, 90's like vibe and a great introduction to music production, as it eases you into ascending complexity requests and "modifications" to simple (and fun) "instruments" kind of like sampling but in a more controlled way. Great if you ever wanted to get into music production but FL Studio (or even Garage Band) scares you due to the complex nature of production software. Also, the music you make is yours to use so, that is a big plus.
Read this BEFORE switching from the demo to the full game!
If you were working on a song during the demo and DID NOT export it, it will be gone without warning once you start the full game. The
free instrument upgrades
you receive after finishing the demo will also be gone. There is no way to access the "demo mode" of the game again, because starting the demo will automatically take you to the save file of the full game. There is also no way to reload a previous save. I loved the demo, played it for almost 4 hours straight. Finished the story, had fun with the instruments and the different ways to use them, whipped up a cool little multi-part song as a finale for myself. Now I'm not gonna pretend it was some once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece, but I was pretty upset that all that hard work just disappeared without a trace when I bought & started up the full game. I would've appreciated some warning like "Thanks for buying the game, we noticed you were working on something in the demo, do you want to finish it before proceeding to the full game version?" but no, the game's story instantly continues where it left off with no warning or acknowledgement of the demo. Once I realized (way too late) what happened, I tried to force quit the game to avoid saving this "progress" and return to the demo (where I discovered that it just goes back to the full game with no way to play the "demo version" again) and after some back and forth somehow screwed up my save file (catalogue for ordering instruments didn't show up correctly & the new instrument I ordered post-demo was gone along with the in-game money I paid for it) and decided to start a new game to fix that. I'm trying really hard to not let this affect my enjoyment of the actual game, but as I said, I'm bummed about my lost song and the story progress I screwed up for nothing. I love this game and want to continue playing again someday, but not right now after that mess.
On to the actual review of the actual game:
+ fun story + nice variety of missions you have to complete + fun characters and dialogue (skip button for the impatient is included) + zero knowledge of music required, the game nudges you towards different concepts without it feeling like you're getting a lecture in music theory + nice variety of instruments and unique ways to use them early on - no way to reload older/different save files, your only options are "continue game" or "new game" - no way to cancel a mission/job once you've started it (if there is, I haven't found it yet) It's a great game for those who always wanted to try "making music" while knowing nothing about it or being unsure where to start. The stuff you can make with even just the free demo sounds great and I love being able to export the music as actual files and use them for whatever. Great game, but don't make the same mistakes I did!
So fun. So chill. Easy to learn and make music. If you enjoy jammin, this game is a blast.
