Overall rating: 3/10, Open world segment: 8/10 Unfound Path: 1/10 I refuse to continue playing this game as the difficulty curve was undone completely for lame and Hard = Good experience with the final area. At first this game was super good and created a unique and engaging Souls-Like experience. The bosses were challenging and required a lot of effort but never took more than a few attempts. There were cracks as there was very clear unpolish with things like bosses canceling moves randomly and hitting you with different ones. There was often long stretches without any checkpoints but that was never an insane issue. I enjoyed this segment of the game a ton and it was shaping up to be one of the best Souls-Like experiences. But, this was all undone with the "Unfound Path" level. This is one of if not the worst designed areas I have ever played in a game. The only enemies are old mini bosses spammed to the point there will often times be 5+ in a single room all spamming unlockable attacks. The level design is nothing remarkable and the only colours are black, gray, and red. Its not fun to explore or progress through. But the final straw was the boss fights. The Golem was fine but The Monolith and Malborn Offspring are horrifically designed fights. The health bars are inflated for zero reason other than to just be hard. The attacks require near perfection which is fine but to have multiple encounters right next to each other requiring this level of skill is just not fun. As someone with hundreds of hours on souls games and souls-likes I can confidently say this final section is at the bottom of everything souls related. I wanted to love this game but to go from a unique and fun experience to resorting to the lamest and saddest form of challenge is heartbreaking. So much potential but ultimately falling just short of the finish line.

You use a newborn's bones stuffed inside a censer as a range attack and the nuns are hot.
Its dumb good ya'll. We're so back
This is what Judgement Day was to The Terminator. Went from A to AAA, and every A hits like a brick. Other companies would have charged 80 buck for the deluxe edition. An absolutely amazing game. Stunning visuals while not being one of the the UE5 performance disasters we are used to. Amazing combat, gory finishers and uncountable styles to play and upgrade. And ... it's very hard. You get your ass kicked, even by minor enemies, if you don't make use of everything you have in your arsenal, which is a little overwheliming at times. One enemy can easily be blocked, another (almost identical) version explodes in your face and kills you instantly. You also do not get a lot of information of some rudimentary mechanics or unlockables. This is one of the games for which you (without being ashamed) should watch a few "what do do first" videos on youtube. You actually have to write down notes on paper, what your custom pins on the map mean. You also have to mark the dungeons you finished by yourself. I also have very little clue what the story or my actual goal is about. Collect eggs for the big-chested lady, I guess.
I had to force myself to finish this game unfortunately. There are some MAJOR issues that ruined my enjoyment thoroughly. While i can't say i didn't have fun at times, I did. Its just every bit of fun i had was also accompanied by even more pain and suffering. Ill outline my biggest Criticisms with the game and do with it as you will. - The Environments are extremely lacking in detail. Sure the textures look fine but most of the open world feels samey. Apart from the snowy region i cant tell you a time i looked at an area and was like wow that's unique, i cant wait to explore this area. More like, oh another forest/cave/swamp area i cant wait to fight the same 4 enemy types again. - Soundtrack is nonexistent? There's only like one track for combat and its engrained into my brain at this point. Overworld music is okay i guess. - Balance is abysmal. The game starts out great but once you reach Mammon and onwards, there's a clear drop in QA. Especially the endgame Area The Unfound Path. The same copy pasted enemies can go from one shotting you in the open world, to being a pushover in a random dungeon. Enemy HP pools are very inconsistent (and EXTREMELY bloated in Night Mode). Boss HP pools are even MORE inconsistent. It just feels to me nobody at the studio even bothered to play their own game past the demo. - Runbacks are worse than DS1. Beacon/Bonfire placement is DISGUSTING in some places, and in some areas you will have two beacons right next to each other? - Leveling your Harbinger feels bad. There is such a small gain when you level up you will never notice a difference. The only reason you level up is to get shell points. - Shell points are not guaranteed on level up - making some level ups feel useless. Hooray i got a +2% to my crit damage! You will struggle to make the build you want because you are constantly in the need of shell points. - Glimpses are very limited. You will only be able to max 3 shells in a playthrough and even that requires a SIGNIFICANT grind to do so. You cannot refund your glimpses so use wisely. - Gold and material requirements for weapon upgrades are also inflated to the point where you will only be able to have one weapon and sidearm maxed at a time. forcing you to reset your weapon if you want to experiment - which costs gloom to do (almost 10k if maxed) - Thought the issues only plagued weapon and shell leveling? Nope, tarstone leveling is even more cumbersome. You are forced to use trash tarstones you don't want to get materials to upgrade the ones you do want to use. and even those are extremely limited. So counterintuitive. - Enemy Animations are inconsistent and poorly telegraphed. Mid-Animation almost all enemies will lunge from large distances to close the distance on you, which not only looks out of place but it feels very cheap. This is the attack magnetism other reviewers complain about. It's especially annoying during runbacks to a dungeon or boss when you are trying to avoid enemies and spamming your dash and yet an enemy behind you lunges from miles away and locks onto your position and hits you. With elites sometimes this means instant death. - Most enemies including bosses have multi string combos that cannot be parried. You can parry the first hit of the string, but the others are going to either hit you or consume your poise when you block the rest. I'm not sure if this is intended? - They give you Three Seals to experiment with (Block, Harden, Parry) but the only one with a shred of viability in the late game is the Block seal followed shortly by harden (Which imo is only useful for the final boss to avoid his AOE attack). The infinite seal is useless as it has a long animation that you get stuck in making it impossible to follow up on multi string hits. - Some "Bosses" are just re skins of elite enemies - sometimes not even a reskin just a normal elite with a name above his hp bar. Or sometimes just a group of trash mobs with a boss hp bar at the top? Very lazy. - The intended bosses have wildly differing quality. Some have great design but poor mechanics, some are downright broken, most are forgettable. The Monolith and the Final boss were some of the most painful experiences I've had in a souls like to date. Soiled my perception of the game and made me not want to do new game plus. If you enjoy pain - Get this game. I believe with a few patches they can make this game enjoyable but for now id give it a 5/10. I beat it out of spite for the devs.
