About
Greetings Enforcer, and thank you for enlisting in the Hypnospace Patrol Department! As the corporatocracy sleeps, outlaws are out there committing terrible transgressions all across our beloved Hypnospace, and these virtual streets aren't going to police themselves!
Hypnospace Outlaw is a '90s internet simulator in which you scour Hypnospace's wide variety of weird and wonderful websites to hunt down wrongdoers, while also keeping an eye on your inbox, avoiding viruses and adware, and downloading a plethora of apps that may or may not be useful.
As part of your job as a Hypnospace Enforcer, you'll be watching out for copyright infringement, internet bullying and more, with reports and rewards coming direct from the Hypnospace Patrol Department to your inbox. In your spare time, you can customize your HypnOS desktop however you see fit, with a variety of downloads, wallpapers, screen savers and helper bots to keep you company.
So slip on your Hypnospace Headband™, and keep these key directives in mind:
Crawl through Cyberspace: Scour the darkest corners of the Web for scumbag users who violate Hypnospace law!
Dangers and delights: Download groovy GIFS and MIDI files, but watch out for adware, toolbars and hackers!
Treasure hunting: Do your job to earn Hypnocoins, or ignore your inbox and go hunting for hidden pages, downloads and secrets!
Relive your childhood: Equip obnoxious screensavers and skins for your desktop, and wiggle your mouse pointer around to make pages load faster!

Obrigado Gemaplys
the many times i tried and got stuck over the years, it was worth returning to see it through. fascinating project, exceptionally well executed, and learning more about the game's development - as well as hearing about the timeline with dreamsettler - is incredibly humanizing, relatable, and it feels like some extension of this game's story panning out in real life. hypnospace is beautiful. to learn the direction dreamsettler was going, it sounds like it was for the best to leave it behind. it's a hard thing to watch your vision be changed - among the plethora of other issues life threw at y'all during the project. it is plain to see how that damages the passion and the heart of your work. you've made something one-of-a-kind and it is a joy to experience. wishing everyone the best with their future projects.
Thanks to my friend for providing me with this game, currently available in the bundle No More Robots: The Unhinged Indie Anthology on Humble Bundle. Glad I went in blind and haven't seen anything about the game since the Kickstarter, and recommend you do so too.
Just play it
Man, what a trip this game was. Made me sit for 4 hours straight up, butt clenched, just to see what will be next. I am a sucker for old petty online drama, and this did have a good amount of drama. I would say that pacing was like a rollercoaster, the start had a very good amount of speed, only near the end of the middle it halted to a crawl, but last part was straight up fire and scratched an itch of someone who's sleuthing on Archive.org from time to time, so you'll see the resemblance. Like no joke, please donate to Archive.org , since I think what they do is irreplaceable in the era of walled information gardens of Discord servers. I would say they've recreated the experience of early commercial internet pretty good, well done. Sad that Dreamsettler was canceled, but scope of that game would be massive considering early 90s internet was pretty small (Hypnospace) compared to early 2000s.
An unbelievable time capsule of what it felt like to be a netizen of the internet in the 90's and 00s, and an amazing, deeply moving story told through that medium. If the idea of being an "Enforcer" turns you off, just know that the "Enforcer" aspect is just a framing device and barely factors in to how this game feels to play. RIP Dreamsettler.
This game is really cool and does a great job of simulating pre-2000s internet/PC culture. For this reason alone, it's very impressive. Unfortunately, it's also a video game, and the video game part is kind of.... Well, it didn't work for me. I won't spoil anything, but due to the way the puzzles are set up, I skipped from roughly 30% of the way through the game to about 70%. I didn't do it on purpose, nor did I know it would happen. In the game's defense, there were some subtle hints that maybe the thread I was pulling at is one I should save for later, but...it's a game about investigating stuff. I was hooked on something and I didn't want to put it down to pick it back up hours later when I had forgotten everything already. I don't really feel like that was my fault, and it's conceptually cool that the game just lets you do this, but...I didn't want to. The content I missed seems to at least partially still be there, but most of it is out of place with the stuff I'm supposed to be looking at now. I don't want to replay the stuff I've already done just to see what I missed, at least not right now. If you buy this game, go into it knowing it's possible to play it wrong and suffer the consequences. To some people, that will be cool! To me it wasn't.
a genuine work of art full of the sincerity and real humanity the world needs right now. i genuinely feel that this game changed me for the better and may do the same for anyone else who grew up in the age of the internet this is imitating. my only complaint is that i can never play it for the first time again. absolutely gut-wrenching that dreamsettler was cancelled. i can only wish jay and everyone else involved the best.
It's good. The story is a little cheesy, but this game has truly unique vibes. seeing all of the characters live their lives asymmetrically captures some of that old-school internet magic, like stumbling across a long-dead forum site that chronicles a small but close-knit community. if you're the type of person who likes playing internet detective, I can't recommend this game more.
do you want to play a game thinking itll be a funny little game and come out of it devastated? Now you can!
