At the current state HellSlave 2 can be extremely fun, but lacks a lot of basic QOL, which are: - no key rebinding - only 2 game speed options and 'fast' is not fast enough - movement with mouse is bad - only 2 volume options (I like the soundtrack but VFX as juicy as they are, are extremely loud when stacked and you can either change all volume or music volume) - general ui problems like no 'loot all' option - escape doesn't open menu for some reason - no manual saves/no way to turn off autosave, no quicksave - no explanation how dodge, misses and hits work. You have 30% hit bonus, enemy has 20% dodge. You will still miss a lot. - demonic path (unique ultimate ability essentially) is a permanent choice, which is fine in general, but the preview is bad. Let me check the whole progression of it or at least let me manually save before making such an important choice There are a lot of things like that, but since there are many, it affects the enjoyment to say the least. Either story or translation are awfully written and most dialogs are: - I'm here to meet my friend - your friend? - yes he is my friend, his name is Hraban - he was captured - where he was taken, I'm gonna save him And so on and so forth. The saving graces here are the setting itself, absolutely stunning art, great soundtrack, very enjoyable combat and fine progression system. Itemization system becomes boring as heck after an hour. You are swarmed with garbage items which do not provide almost any benefit too your class. Later on the game will teach you to slot gems in equipment slot, which share the same small inventory and again boring as heck as you do not need melee damage on mage and vice versa. To get decent items you have to spam reroll button in the trade menu in a small hope something useful will be sold after a dozens of rerolls. Another underwhelming part is that the demonic path abilities scale really bad and some upgrades barely change anything. All that lead to the fact that after early game literally nothing spices up the gameplay sadly. No new intricate systems or clever mechanics. Not to mention that enemies scale much faster than you do since half of your ability has absolutely useless level scaling instead of your magical power for example. Also later you will be taught to get special loot from elite enemies, but only if ur level is close to theirs. I was always above 1-3 levels even tho I didn't specifically farm anything, so it led to me having only 1 after hours since the feature has become available. If you are looking for a dungeon crawler and you can overcome the jank - try the demo at least. At any other case I would probably wait for the fixes myself and buy it later, especially since almost none of the demo feedback was implemented. But in the current state of the world and gaming industry, passionate developers deserve some love, especially solo developers. That is why I'm keeping this game despite its major shortcomings and even writing this review to support it even further. I just hope the dev will take a day or two off and then implement the feedback and fix the most annoying issues and make item system and gems more interesting than they currently are.

I loved the first Hellslave. A LOT. It was one of those games that completely clicked with me, so when Hellslave 2 came out, I bought it both for myself and as a gift for someone else. I had been waiting for this game for a long time. There are things here that I genuinely love, and I want to start with those, because I don't think this game is bad because the developer didn't care. Quite the opposite - I can see an enormous amount of work, research and experimentation behind it.
The good stuff

Music is fantastic. Seriously, I loved it. It is atmospheric, memorable and feels very high quality.
Art style is also great. It is consistent with first game, which I really appreciate. Visual identity of Hellslave is still very strong.
I also really liked the variety of mechanics. You can clearly see that the developer has studied and experimented with a lot of different ideas. There is a lot of knowledge and creativity packed into this game, and I absolutely respect that.

Neutral points

Quest journal only keeps one active quest visible at a time, so there is no convenient way to see the full list of things currently going on. You can switch between quests on the map, so it isn't difficult - just unnecessarily inconvenient.
There are also still quite a few bugs despite the game being released. I reported several of them in Discord: disappearing UI elements, the map breaking or shifting, and situations where picking up loot requires you to basically spin around in one spot for an absurd amount of time.
The sound settings were also a surprisingly big problem for me. The music and sound effects are extremely loud, but there is no proper way to balance them individually. Even when I turned the master volume almost all the way down, the sound effects were still ridiculously loud. Eventually I just lowered the entire game's volume on my laptop so I could play without getting annoyed by the audio. That's not really how this should work.

And reasons why this review is negative in the end

Excessive fighting: enemies can summon totems, swords or other objects onto the battlefield. You can kill the enemy (all the enemies even) and still have to fight all those objects with tiny amounts of HP till the end. This doesn't make the encounter more challenging. It makes it take longer. So instead of having one interesting, difficult fight, I repeatedly got lots of smaller fights where the same enemies were shuffled around.
That feeling gets even worse in the Purgatory levels. Clearing them was easily the most tedious part of the entire game. You fight the same enemies over and over again. They don't meaningfully evolve, their skills don't change, their compositions don't really change, and the main thing the game seems to add is a tiny amount of extra HP. Level 1 and level 15 of Purgatory felt exactly the same to me. Maybe I had to hit something a few more times. That's not meaningful difficulty progression.
Achievements: 15 Purgatory levels, 3 classes and 3 demons require multiple playthroughs. I normally don't mind grinding achievements, but I'm absolutely not doing it here. In this specific game it is not feels like "can you create a powerful enough build to overcome this challenge?" and more like "can you tolerate the game doing the same thing to you for long enough?" The game doesn't offer enough variation to make another playthrough worth player's time.
Items. How are the level 11 gloves I picked up in the Forbidden Shrine still better than basically everything I received later while checking every chest till 15 purgatory? Item progression should not work like that and we are not in Path of Exile, c’mon. And why can a level 12 item and a level 48 item differ by only 1%? And why can an older, lower-level item of the same rarity be better than a newer one? Eventually, finding new loot stopped being exciting because it was not actually an upgrade.
Gold & loot. There is way too much money and loot everywhere. Because item stats are so randomized, most of what you pick up ends up being sold or destroyed. If you sell it, you quickly accumulate hundreds of thousands of gold - but there is basically nothing to spend it on. I genuinely don't understand why gold is even in the game.
Merchants. Random blacksmiths and merchants standing in completely empty places immediately after massive battles with demon lords in destroyed settlements are incredibly immersion-breaking. Walking through a devastated settlement after a huge demonic battle and finding a random guy casually waiting there to sell me a sword is just absurd. But maybe it felt like that because the world was so empty.
Storytelling

Story was probably the biggest disappointment for me, especially compared to the first game. Up until Mammon, I was still following what was happening and was reasonably interested. After that, I completely lost the thread. There is technically a story, but it stopped feeling meaningful. I genuinely think the developer knows the material extremely well, and you can see how much research went into it. But knowing the material and writing an engaging story are different skills. I think the game could have really benefited from some consultation with a narrative designer. Hellslave 1 had a much stronger sense of progression. We were trying to reach Hell, the situation on Earth was getting worse, demons were becoming more prominent, and the whole thing gradually felt more dangerous and grand. Here, I mostly felt like I was walking around killing everyone and everything for no reason. The idea of demons pretending to be rulers and manipulating people is interesting, but I don't think the game communicates it very well. Having people immediately call the player a spy and try to kill them every time they pass through a gate (IT HAPPENED THREE TIMES) doesn't make the population feel manipulated - it just makes them feel stupid. For a large part of the game, we are simply carrying out the requests of random strangers. We never really think about how our allies' actions affect our plans. In almost every side quest, the protagonist demands gold. When people he barely knows give him orders - we simply follows them. There is no analysis, no strategy, no real decision-making. We don't have any options and just go around bonking whoever happens to be in our way, whenever the game tells us to: demons, their subordinates or ordinary people simply following their orders or just existing near demons by chance. It is really hard to actually have at least a little bit of agency in here.

Most side quests are basically "go there, kill X things, bring me X things." There isn't enough variety or storytelling to make them interesting, so eventually I was doing them because they were on the map rather than because I actually cared about them.
Ending…
I was told that I could stay or leave, but I wasn't actually given the choice. The credits started immediately. I really wish the game had let me decide whether to stay or go through the portal first and then started the credits. It's a small thing, but if you tell the player they have a choice, let them actually make it. Let it feel immersive even for a second, at least at a grand final.

Despite this negative review, I really hope the developer keeps making games. His projects clearly make me feel a lot of emotions, and I think that's exactly because I can see so much potential in them. I genuinely believe his future projects could benefit from consulting with specialists in areas outside his own expertise, and I would be very happy to see what Ars Goetia creates beyond Hellslave. I may not have enjoyed Hellslave 2, but I still want to see what comes next.
I could have a really fun and powerful build, if half the abilities would actually work properly. It astonishes me, how there have been so many review copies being given out, with none of the players realising how many passive effects are not doing anything at all. But that aren't even all the negatives, the amount of frustration caused by all the random dodges, blocks and parries, when attacking enemies, makes this "strategy game" feel much more like playing a game of dice. I was really trying to enjoy Hellslave 2, as there is so much to love about it, but can't full heartedly recommend it, due to all the bugs and frustrating design decisions.
I loved the 4 hours I was playing until I got a character bricked because I lost a fight and it teleported me to the top of a mountain where I cannot progress, move, even see my character any more. I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't prepared for game breaking bugs I guess.
Really solid successor to the original Hellslave - if you liked it, you'll like this. Though if you're curious about the quality I think the atmosphere of Hellslave 1 was grittier and darker, with a lot more morally grey tones, while Hellslave 2 has a bigger feeling world with a more standard RPG encounter system (rather than a threat system like the original). The music is also fairly reminiscent of Diablo 2 to me. The skill system feels more layered than the original, the equipment system is enjoyable and has a socketing style system, and there's a a lot of interesting mechanics you can exploit to get stronger. While not GotY, it's definitely an RPG I can 100% recommend trying out if you like the aesthetic, and want some turn based and more methodical combat.
Combining the setting of Diablo, the design of Diablo, the monetization of... not-Diablo, with a neat turn-based combat system works incredibly well. A few odd development choices here and there but otherwise, a great new title with more brutal and bloody cutscenes than a Tarantino movie.
