A seed drops to the floor, and from it your character is born. That’s all the introduction you get. The game leaves you to piece everything together by observing the world around you and forming your own interpretation, much like the protagonist himself, who never utters a single word. After following the only available path, you reach the first set of puzzles, which naturally introduces the game’s core mechanics. At first, you have no special abilities. You can only push objects and interact with levers, which leads into the familiar puzzle concept of pressure switches that require something heavy to stay pressed. A few minutes later, you unlock your first ability. It allows you to summon a heavy block that can be placed on switches or thrown into water to create a path across. You can have up to two blocks active at the same time, and summoning a third causes the oldest one to disappear. It’s a simple mechanic, but it’s only one of four main abilities you'll eventually unlock, and together they make the puzzles consistently enjoyable to solve. The story itself remains mysterious. In general, you're chasing someone who looks exactly like you, except they're your opposite, either black or white, depending on your current form. This duality is woven into both the narrative and the visual design. The monochrome art style is surprisingly beautiful, filled with small environmental details that keep each area distinct. Combined with incredibly fluid animations that never feel like they've cut corners, the whole world has a striking amount of personality. The game is divided into several interconnected screens that you can usually explore quite freely, although the path forward is rarely difficult to identify. The opening section focuses on teaching each ability through its own compact puzzle dungeon. During these segments, you can only equip a single power, and after completing the dungeon you're returned to the main area, where that newly acquired ability allows you to unlock new paths. As for the powers themselves, after the block ability you gain a drone that can fly through air vents, a claw that lets you pull objects toward you or latch onto surfaces to swing across gaps, a ball that captures small critters so they can be transported where they're needed, and perhaps the most interesting power of all, the ability to switch between black and white forms. Certain platforms, objects, and even entire paths only exist in one color. While learning these abilities, you'll notice that each one comes from a pedestal marked with its own unique glyph. At first, this seems like simple decoration, but its purpose becomes clear once you reach the second major area. Here you will encounter numerous pedestals displaying different combinations of glyphs, visually indicating which powers they grant. This is where the game opens up considerably, allowing you to equip two abilities at the same time. The game also becomes much less restrictive. Instead of guiding you directly toward the solution, it expects you to decide which combination of powers will help you progress. There are often several objectives available simultaneously, giving you the freedom to choose which one to tackle first. Thankfully, it never becomes frustrating because discovering the area's map reveals icons that clearly indicate which combination of abilities is needed for each puzzle. Even better, the powers complement each other in creative ways. You can throw the critter-catching ball onto your drone and fly it to collect creatures, while combining the block ability with the black-and-white mechanic allows you to kick blocks into otherwise unreachable places. Overall, the game features three major open areas. The first contains five puzzle dungeons that introduce the core abilities, while the second and third each feature ten more. These puzzle dungeons serve as the game's primary objective because completing them rewards you with glyphs that gradually fill the ground where your journey first began, the very spot where your character sprouted from a tiny seed. One of my favorite features is the collection of arcade machines scattered throughout the world. These are actually your primary objective before entering most dungeons because interacting with them opens doors, activates elevators, drains flooded passages, or performs some other action that reveals the dungeon entrance. What makes them especially memorable, though, are the platforming challenges inside them. Each arcade stage begins at the bottom, and your goal is to climb to the top by jumping over hazards, crossing gaps, and scaling ladders in a style that feels like a love letter to classic arcade platformers. The hazards inside each stage are themed around the nearby dungeon. A critter dungeon has you avoiding the creatures you've been catching, while the block and black-and-white dungeon features falling blocks and disappearing platforms that only exist in one color. Every puzzle dungeon has its own arcade challenge, and each one includes both a normal and a much tougher hard mode. The arcade machines are all interconnected, so once you've activated one, you can replay any previously unlocked stage from any other machine. They also allow you to enter secret codes found throughout the world, whether hidden in obscure locations or tucked away inside collectible images. It's a clever system that rewards curiosity and encourages you to pay close attention to your surroundings. Secrets themselves come in the form of scattered pieces of paper that gradually assemble into complete illustrations once collected. There are several of these images, and some hide clues or secrets of their own. If you discover a valid code and enter it correctly, you'll unlock cheats for the arcade platforming sections, such as a double jump. Finally, while the game thankfully allows you to revisit earlier areas at any time, there is one annoyance that never quite goes away. Every time you want to change your equipped powers, you have to return all the way back to the main hub. It isn't a huge flaw, but after enough backtracking, it definitely starts to wear on your patience.

Consider this a "mixed" review, but I'm choosing not recommend so people will read it. I played the demo and loved it. However in the full game I stopped having fun after the second map, which by both play time and completion percentage, is well under half of the game. I did complete all puzzles in the 3rd map just to see what they were like, but I didn't have a good time doing it. About half of the puzzles came down to bashing my head against the wall until I figured out some property of the abilities that I didn't know about before. There are also a few (maybe 2 or 3) logical and mechanical leaps that I felt were a bit too out there to be considered reasonable, to the point where they felt like more like exploits than intended mechanics, but maybe that was the point. Anyway, the puzzles are extremely well designed and many of them have really clever solutions, even the really annoying ones that took forever to solve. The base mechanics are very well thought out and it's clear that a lot of time went into designing the abilities so they can be used in unique ways. The art style is great too, I love when games make bold choices and hard commit to them like this. On the other hand, the game has absolutely no respect for the player's time, and this was ultimately what made me decide against completing the game. The controls are clunky with long animations, with some ability combos requiring 5 or more button presses. It may not sound like a lot but when many puzzles involve extensive trial and error, it really starts to add up. Switching abilities takes forever becuase you have to go back to the hub every time. But worst of all there's no progress tracker so you have no idea if you've found all the items in a given area/level or not. And the only way to check is to go back into the level, so I hope you like repeating puzzles because they don't stay completed. After completing the 3rd map I realized that the rest of the game would involve combing through areas I had already completed, searching for any pickups I missed, and with how long that would take I decided to hang it up. It's a shame because this game could be incredible if it got just a few QOL tweaks to save time. I clocked about 20 hours but I feel like it would be half that if the appropriate features were added and maybe more of a hint system to show players certain mechanics, especially on the 3rd map. There are mechanical hints on maps 1 and 2, idk why they suddenly go away when the difficulty spikes on map 3. Trying every possible ability combo on every possible interactible in hopes of discovering something new gets old fast and is not what I want to spend my time doing when playing puzzle games. So yeah, really solid base but waaaay too much repetition and meaningless time wasting for me.

I've been playing it on my OLED Steam Deck and the contrast just *pops* off the screen. The puzzles are smart (perhaps sometimes too smart, or I'm too dumb) and solving them feels like a real sucess. Super happy to keep playing this and going for 100% as there are still a lot of hidden secrets left to discover!
Really cool game. I adore experiences like this one that truly encourage me to plumb its depths. Every fifteen minutes I was shown something cool or given a new mechanic to tinker with. This review is vague for the sake of avoiding spoilers. Puzzles are super tightly designed and the art is gorgeous. I highly recommend you pick this up if you’re a fan of puzzle games. My only complaints were for all the content I saw after I rolled credits. - Although there were still moments of discovery and beauty, the design of the puzzles really started to get sloppy. Not everywhere but often enough to start to feel like a drag. - Certain puzzles also required very long execution times, which forced me to spend long stretches of time tediously putting everything into place (and hoping I didn’t have to start again). - Other puzzles required timing windows so tight I literally spent ten minutes redoing a 15 second sequence over and over again. - Certain locations also had placeholder assets or just lacked the polish of the surrounding areas. - I almost got my save soft locked in one location and some bugs forced me to reload (stuck outside map, puzzle-critical insect despawned). I had an incredible time with this game up until I ran into a couple bugs and a tedious puzzle section. After that point my immersion broke and never truly came back. Which is a shame because I had yet to hit some beautiful locations with some great moments. If you’re interested in exploring the post credits content, I might recommend waiting for some more bug patches and waves of polish. This game needs more playtesting and QA in order for the back half of it to live up to the incredible first half. If it does I’ll update this review and it’ll be a glowing recommendation with zero caveats.
Combining awesome handcrafted puzzles with a fresh degree of freedom that lets you pick which puzzles to attempt first, Helix: Descent N Ascent (or simply Helix: DNA) is as enjoyable as puzzle games get, a title worthy of sitting side by side with games such as Cocoon and Chants of Sennaar, and a strong debut for Badass Mongoose. Your objective is to explore a mysterious world as you take on a variety of puzzle challenges under unique conditions. Save for a few exceptions, being introduced to a new ability doesn’t mean owning it or unlocking it forever. Instead, your loadout shifts every time you pick a new challenge, and once it does, it’s up to you to head to the respective testing grounds to obtain a new glyph. The game does an excellent job leading you to the right place without holding your hand. What’s so cool is the way these powers come to interact with one another as you progress. Each chapter feels like a piece of an intricate rabbit hole that doesn’t overstay its welcome. And once you hit the second half of the game (which takes place post-credits), the brilliant game design shines even brighter as you’re asked to use three abilities and their synergies to progress. You’d think having so many combinations would make things overwhelming, but no. In practice, these more complex challenges feel like the actual mission you have been training for. Many great games end just as you start thinking of how far their mechanics could be taken. But Helix doesn’t leave you wondering.
