Yeah this one's really fun, but just know it's got a major learning curve for beginners. Honestly, it's more of a wall than a curve, your first several ships will not be very good in either the looks or the functionality departments. Expect the first 100-150 hours at least to be just purely learning how the heck the stuff in game works and how/when to use them properly. BUT, the build system will feel like second nature after the initial learning stages, and you'll eventually get to build the dreadnaughts and battleships of your dreams! What works in the real world often won't work in this game, and vice versa. This game provides some unique meta/challenges that are very different to real world considerations. For instance, missiles are generally not very effective in this game, as they are expensive, easy to dodge, tend to have a short range, and are very easily countered with CIWS and laser anti-munition systems. This means that pure missile cruisers that dominate in modern real world navies will be hopelessly outclassed in a game like this by craft that take better advantage of the meta. Broadside ships can be harder to make work compared to frontsider ships that are better suited for the armor meta, and some will recommend you avoid broadsiders altogether. Personally though, I think that's lame as hell to just avoid them and all of my ships in my fleet are more typical to broadsiding battleships/cruisers of history, you absolutely can make slow and classic broadsider ships work if you take the time to learn the meta. While I like the challenges of this game and the unique meta to learn, the main gripe I have with the game is that the AI is... well, pretty dumb. It's generally very easy to beat the AI factions in the campaign mode when your fleet has been designed to best the enemy faction ships you will encounter one-on-one. The AI factions often lure themselves into single ship battles against your entire fleet, when this game is entirely built around fleet action. They will also fall quickly to blitz tactics where you rush across their territory to their main base, they implement next to no protection against this and you can defeat some factions within a couple minutes of war starting. Really, as long as you have the better ship you are guaranteed to win, as the AI factions barely strategize at all. The AI collision detection is also pretty laughable in this game, it's very common for your ships/planes to just collide into each other at random no matter what you do to configure the AI. The AI is dumber than a box of hammers, but the game itself is really fun to play. If you like designing and adapting things to solve problems, you will really enjoy From The Depths. 9/10, would complete the very hard campaign (40 hour par time) within 5 hours again

If you have it, you'll love it. If you don't, you may not.
Of the many technical building games I have played, this is by far the most complex and enjoyable. Be forewarned, at 200 hours I have made only 12 working weapons and 3 working ships. But I am learning how to improve every system-of which there are many, including engines, the AI controller, detection, active defenses, and offensive weapons. Many hours spent tinkering with designs in the sandbox, and then using them in the campaign which plays like a real time strategy. The campaign solves an issue I always have with real time strategy, my units just aren't controllable enough. Here? You make them.
Fantastic game for those patient enough. Like others have said the learning curve is a bit steep but not much different than many other complex sandbox games. The larger campaigns and adventure modes are a blast but there's always enjoyment messing around in designer or playing a short single-faction mission. Community is small but helpful and dedicated. Plenty of ways to build upon the base game if that is what you are looking for. Also, a lot of options and settings for those like me with colorblindness to make things easier to see. Not perfect, but leagues ahead of most games out there.
