Endearing and packed with atmospheric delights, Fran Bow has brilliant potential and good but not ideal execution. Occasionally, puzzle solutions feel arbitrary, and chapter five suffers from both rushed pacing and a lack of buildup and intensity. The vibe of the doctor’s waiting area, for instance, which could have been oppressively, suffocatingly dreary, making the stomach uneasy, was instead plain and even flippant, doing little to complement the scenes that come directly after. It almost feels like the developers, having poured their hearts into chapters one through four, didn’t have enough left to give. That said, the ending made me cry hard and is anything but unsatisfying. There is so much beauty in this game, so much to be proud of in Fran, stronger and braver than she knows.
