I am a person of simple words. 1. Turn Based - check 2. Party Based RPG - check 3. Rome - check APPROVED
I liked this game, it offers a great story, good writing (even contains latin), fully voice acted, choices matter leading to multiple endings, you command a roman legion, characters develop as you play, you can exploit battles for easy wins by spamming greek fire (which is just a molotov) or torches if you are poor and you get to sleep with Cleopatra. But, it does have it’s flaws. My main complain being the legion battles. They just resume around picking the highest green numbers and auto-resolve stuff. And by stuff I mean that it’s just a bunch of icons clashing with each other in an animation which you can skip, you have absolutely no control, just make sure you got enough soldiers, fill up the commander slots, and during battles pick stratagems which have the best numbers, that’s it. Fortunately, those battles play fast, but still, it is one of the most boring things in the game. BTW, speaking of boring, do yourself a favor and turn up the Combat Speed from Options. As for the tactical gameplay, well, I am divided on it, mainly because of balancing. As as stated fire is OP and pair that up with poison which blocks healing, you got yourself in a pickle. But access to both are more in your hands rather that the enemy’s, they either use fire or poison, but rarely both at the same time (btw, fire/burning and poison are DOTs which bypass shields, combo them up with bleed too and watch even bosses ascend to the roman gods in about 3 turns). The biggest challenge in the gameplay was to not get one character surrounded, because enemies are like wolves, they are hell bent focused one just a character. But not everything is easy, some battles posed a challenge, however it is a shame that most of such cases were made challenging because enemies keep on spawning in waves and eventually becomes overwhelming. So, it might not be the level of X-com when it comes to the tactical gameplay, but it sure makes it up with the story, choices do matter, art style is great, didn’t encountered major game bugs, has likable characters, and even teaches you a bit of latin, you even get a glossary in main menu going through common words used in the game and their definitions. What can I say, I rec it for any tactics enjoyer, and maybe even give the previous installment, Expeditions: Viking, a try, it ain’t as good as this but still it’s alrigh.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,402 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

this game is fully alright. if someone told me they liked it, i'd understand why. but for me at least, it's missing that extra spark that really interests me in a game and its world. for example, the game plays lip service to roman misogyny(no fighting, few rights, no first name), but still puts a female main character in charge of a legion right off the bat. it's mainly because your character is a nepo baby and your commanding officer is a powerful family friend, but still feels weird! it'd make more sense, given that you're fleeing assassins and politics, to do as another character does and crossdress for the duration of the war. instead, systemic misogyny is brushed aside with a single victory. it makes the setting feel hollow. another problem, it barely feels like your dialogue choices change anything. if you say something approving, the other characters will act like you're disapproving and need to be convinced. if you're mean you get the same promotion as if you were nice. if you spare a man's life and use him to sneak into a city, surprise! the enemy general saw you coming anyway and you still have to fight. and the rest of the characters feel archetypal and bland. caeso is a mildly misogynistic yes man, the old man is just there to stroke his beard and say vague and approving things, the gladiator just yells about how you should kill everybody, and julia is roman mulan. so who cares? not me. the gameplay is boring too. no magic, obviously, so party battles are just one simple and plain fight after another. and the army battles are an overly complicated mess that comes down to "the bigger army wins". it's just dull. a game like this that handles all of these aspects(writing, choices, party and army battles) far better is rogue trader. go check that one out if you haven't already played it.
Expeditions has been one of those series that has been downhill from the start for me. The first game was one of my surprise favorites that I still think about often but each game trades it's unique charm for "AAA quality". Good on them if this has been working for them, but I'm definitely not the target audience anymore. I want to start with the good because it's absolutely there. It's still got the fantastic historically focused roleplaying games that I loved. The writing is good enough and the core tactical engine here is enough to do the trick. And when it looks good, it looks real good. But sadly, there's some definite bugs in the graphics/texturing which loads in play-doh versions of the game. (I suspect it's for quicker loading, but the game just forgets to finish the HQ loads) The thing is, at any moment, I'm right on the cusp of enjoying my time with Expeditions: Rome. But I can't honestly say I've enjoyed any of my actual playtime. It was frustrating. It was annoying. It was tedious. I feel that the negatives are frequent enough, and harsh enough that I can't find the flow. One of the things I loved about the first game was that it felt like you were a commander to a larger force. You had a massive number of near-faceless characters to choose from. It was fairly open-ended in how you do things and was very much a system-based game like X-Com with RPG elements. I described the game as "Abstract". By now? It's an modern day AAA RPG where you have a cast of pre-written characters and a plot to follow. The quality of the writing is "Video Game Writer". It works fine when they remember that they are making a game. But it has a tendency to be a bit sloppy and amateur when they overestimate their skills. An example of this has gotta be what the girl boss complaints are whining about. There's a Mulan moment and the writers decide we need to hear each characters individual thoughts on the reveal. - "Of course I've known. She's one of the best soldiers I've ever had." - "What? How could a woman be so good?" - "I suspected it all along" - "We'll make strong babies!" The problem is that she's a cool freaking character, but the writing for the scene actively hurts the experience. Most of the time, its not THAT bad. You just get a Marvel-Tier joke on a serious quest. There's "No S*** Sherlock" tier mysteries and reveals. If you play video games, you know what I mean. From a functional standpoint, it works but I wish they just trusted the game and the players a little more. But the AAA story means that you have a premade party to use for much of the story. You'll still recruit and customize rando's but why would you use a weaker version of the heroes? Well, the devs asked that question too and added missions that require a party of faceless units. (There was an option to disable these on a New Game and I wish to god I did) But the battles are really where the game loses it for me. Nearly every battle so far has been a gimmick fight. Unique objectives is a great idea, but it's overdone here. Each mission requires a unique strategy, path, playstyle, or just RNG to succeed. I haven't once felt "That was a good challenge"... but "Oh, that's what I was supposed to do" or "That was annoying" Even in random battles they'll be a gimmick to make sure every fight is a challenge. Sure, I'm a heavily armed roman legion... but I'm paying off bandits because I'm tired of starting a mission surrounded, outnumbered 5 to 1, and watching my healer sniped by arrows before I've been allowed to act. It's just not fun. And that's the ultimate problem... it's just not fun. The world map is tedious as you need to control your party and an army seperately. The inventory management is tedious as you need to arm dozens of characters with individual items and manually craft replacements for consumables. Finding food and medicine is somehow more annoying than the first games "Set up a camp every night". The missions are challenging for the wrong reasons. The UI is jank, and I've encountered bugs ranging from texture to falling through the ground. I know this review sounds ultra-negative which sucks because I don't hate this game. It's decent enough quality and you can see the fun core. But every emotional response and every memory I have is with it's problems. I'm sure there's an audience that could like this, but its not me.
