Way too buggy. You spend an hour trying to get to the bottom of a dungeon and they game freezes and you have to start all over. It happened 3X. I give up.
I am surprised about both the incompetency and the boasting people have in the reviews. Half say the game is hard, the other half that is it easy. People compain about the game mechanics, enemy spawns, number of enemies and then there are people complaining about how they can exploit the game and make it easy.(?!)? Are you even for real? there are even people saying the game is just not for them, and that is why the game deserves a 5/10?! You are all crazy! You can't even write a proper review and keep a critical mind about a game you just played. Having said that, bellow is my review. The game is fun. This is not a typical game I would enjoy, as I do not like tactical games like x-com. Having said that, this is one of the few games of this genre I actually enjoyed. The game is simple, and the mechanics are easily understood by gaming veterans, no matter what games you play. There can also be depth on how you use each class and in fact pair specific abilities from different classes together. In fact, there are skills in classes that make one character completetly different from another in the same class, and that is a refreshing dynamic althought not unheard of in strategy and tactical games. The "demense" management is something I always appreciate in games, and having a base you upgrade is a nice touch as always. I am at rank 3 of the Great Hall and the progression seems nice! I also love the defence missions, as they are the most challenging ones. I have to note here, that I am trying to play the game on a personal 0 wounds/deaths challenge since I first boot it up, and that also makes it enjoyable for me. As for graphics and sounds, they are solid. They use specific kind of graphics and that is fine, as there are details in things one would actually expect. The game could also work perfectly as a mobile game, although I am not a fan of this. Costumization options are there, in almost every aspect of the game, and that is also great! You can unlock new things by playing the game, so keep that in mind. If you are a fun of tactical strategy, turn-based games, you could for sure think about giving this a try. Don't know yet how replayable the game is at the moment, but I got to say that even thought there is a specific number of different mission objectives, it it not as boring as people make it out to be in reviews.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

I absolutely loved the setting (medieval warfare in France with a pinch of supernatural / occult stuff), but other than that, everything else was half-assed by the devs. In the end they just surrenderred (ha-ha) and abandoned the game in a very unfinished and unpolished state. There are still some game-breaking bugs, freezes and crashes, enemies spawning in enclosed spaces, making them unreachable.. Basic QOL fearutes are missing - you can save at any time but you can't name your saves, you can't see character details when you're selecting characters for a mission.. Well, you get the picture :)
I've bought the game at a deep discount, played through most of it but couldn't bother finishing. It's not a bad game, just meh. There is one main design choice that makes the gameplay actively more repetetive and less diverse: In theory there's a variety of classes and a diverse set of weapons/armors for you characters, including multiple unique ones with individual mechanics - that are indeed interesting. This is negated by the fact over the course of the game, as you pay resources to upgrade them all to higher and higher tiers - this is done once per *type* of armor/weapon, per tier. So you're actively discouraged to use all this variety and try various tactics and combinations. Instead, you're incentivised to specialize in as few classes of soldiers and types of armor/weapon as possible (especially those that can be used by multiple classes), to efficiently level up your gear. This results in missions feeling samey and repetetive, and it just seems to me I've played almost the same mission over and over, until I just didn't bother continuing and finishing the story.
Well, I've beaten it on Baron... TLDR: this review is a *very* reserved recommend... Even its target audience might not want to buy Crown Wars due to lack of animation speedup, but someone with time to burn might enjoy pouring hours into this game customizing their troop models and watching the execution animations.
Good:
-Excellent visual customization, 'Pimp My Ride" but for your troops. Extremely detailed once you get a few armor upgrades and missions under your belt. Like painting miniatures. -Visually enjoyable. Good kill animations, overall a good balance between snappy/fast without overly sacrificing detail. -Decent tactical complexity, with various damage types, status effects, abilities with interesting interactions. -Varied challenges & maps - whilst grinding procgen missions eventually got boring, story missions always felt fresh. -Mostly stable; only crashed once, had some minor bugs which required a reload.
Bad:
-Grindy as hell -Limited itemization - in comparison to graphical customization, choice of mechanically different equipment is limited for most classes. 1 armor set, 1-4 "consumable" (they are 'expended' for that mission and will regenerate the next map, you don't need to buy another one lol) -Storyline starts out interesting, but gets cringe as it progresses. [strike]I suppose that was unavoidable for modern Fr*nchmen.[/strike] -Things just aren't explained well, the game doesn't tell you "Blunt damage is good against armor" etc
Ugly:
-NO SPEEDUP FUNCTION?!?! Most of the animations are well done, but after the 999th time watching a single NPC slowly patrol back and forth I want to avoid wasting more of my life. Freaking Age of Decadence had animation speedup, and that game is 10 years older than Crown Wars. -Sometimes the skill/item/etc description is misleading or outright deceptive. For example: the Duelist's Barracks statcard shows the stat bonuses from both sets of gear at the same time... but in missions he clearly only gets the bonus from a single set! Another is the Skirmisher's potential 2nd passive, one of which states "regain MP after killing an opponent with skill"... But it triggers on Skirmisher's skill use? I suppose it got buffed and they forgot to change the skill description.

30 hours in its a neat game... that said i am stuck on a mission, i kill a enemy game freeze. had to alt f4 same thing.. so i guess i try a older save.. i get things happen but yesh for 1.0 where the game is broken like that? ugh.. still i paid 2.40 for it.. like i wont cry about it lol. but does seem odd
There are competent things about the game, but ultimately I can't say it's a very fun experience. Everything in the game just moves too slowly. Sure, it belongs to the turn-based strategy genre which is supposed to be slow-paced -- I get that -- but this doesn't mean that animations, load screens, and enemy walk sequences need to take forever. In any given battle, more than half of my time is spent waiting for animations to play or waiting for the enemy to make their move. The story is yet another dead serious, uninspired medieval wartime tale. I can stomach this if it's in something like Jeanne d'Arc for the PSP with its fantastical magic elements and whimsical characters added in, but Crown Wars takes itself entirely too seriously. The characters, the setting, and the story are all unmemorable and uninspired, giving you little reason to care about the game in the first place. The core gameplay loop simply isn't fun. Wood is a huge bottleneck for anything that you're building. Most of your time spent on the "resource management" side of things will involve trying to find more wood, or seeing marginal increases to characters' functionality. Characters generally don't have much flexibility or intrigue to them. Progressing through the game doesn't feel rewarding or fun. Missions feel exactly the same and do not necessitate any interesting strategies to win them. I got to a point where I was dreading the next mission, not because the game was getting too difficult, but because I was just falling asleep in front of my monitor and felt like I was doing a chore. At this point, I realized I should probably just uninstall the game and play something else. Between the sluggish pace, the uninspired gameplay loop, and clear lack of playtesting, I am not convinced that the developers value their players' time or attention. Oh, and the voice acting is laughable as well. Most people would consider this a turn off, but in all honesty, I kind of like when games have terrible voice acting. It's probably the most memorable part of the game, and you can at least derive some entertainment from it. Unlike the rest of the game. If you REALLY love XCOM and are somehow tired of replaying Enemy Unknown or XCOM 2, then I guess this is not a bad way to spend your time. If you are anyone else, you can find better strategy games elsewhere.
I tried different video settings, including full screen and windowed, still same outcome: after exiting main menu and cut scene finishing, instead of starting the game I get crash popup: > LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line: 198] Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost. (Error: 0x887A0020 - 'INTERNAL_ERROR')
