Reviews
When I started writing this review, I was sure I was going to give this game a "5/10 but still recommended" score. However, now that I’ve put my thoughts into words, I realize that I cannot in good conscience give it a recommendation.
My favorite game genres are RPGs and turn-based strategy and I am also a huge history buff. I spend about 10 hours a week studying history, and my single favorite topic is the Roman Republic and Empire. Just recently I finished the 180-episode "History of Rome" podcast and am currently on episode 70 of "History of Byzantium." Naturally, this was one of my most anticipated games, especially since the Total War franchise hasn't made a Rome game in a decade. Unfortunately, Expeditions: Rome has disappointed me on every level possible. The RPG elements are ruined by the strategy layer. Instead of building a curated party of heroes, you are often forced to hire random warriors for the strategic map and use them as your RPG party half the time. The item crafting is too shallow and feels next to useless. The only positive part of the RPG experience is the character upgrade paths, which are done pretty well. However, even this is marred by having to manage upgrades for too many different generic characters. The turn-based battles are fun enough but can be frustrating at times. The "strategy" part isn't much better. You choose what to build in your base and which "interest spots" (wood, metal, etc.) to conquer to gain resources. But "conquering" is just a matter of sending soldiers and waiting out a clock. You can take over enemy bases, but the legion battle mini-game is unsatisfying. Your choices have little effect on the battle's outcome; at best, you secure better loot when the battle ends. Finally, the "historical" aspect is a letdown. As someone who knows this period well, I can tell with full confidence that the developers don't share that passion. You can usually feel when a game is made by people who love the subject - games like Total War or Civilization are full of references that are historically accurate and provide great world-building. That is not the case here. Most references are either inaccurate or made up. It feels like "fluff" designed to make the game seem historical without having anything to do with real history. It seems like the creators tried to make "XCOM in Roman times," but the result falls short of XCOM by a mile. It is fun for the first few hours while you discover the mechanics, but it quickly becomes a tedious slog of "more of the same." I only finished the first section of the game, but reading other reviews, it doesn't look like it improves in later sections, so I won't be continuing.

Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 1.57/day in the week to Aug 8 → 3.29/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

The game offers a fun premise and an engaging fantasy, however it all is hampered by bloat, unpolished mechanics, bugs. The game overstays it's welcome and becomes a boring trudge through an endless repetitive mire. Perhaps the worst aspect is the long, protracted, often inane story that almost constantly railroads you into making stupid decisions, so that it can move forward to what amounts to a selection of shallow, melodramatic endings. Let me introduce the stupidity of the writing with a brief example: at one point my party was engaged in a protracted fight to capture an important witness that can produce damning evidence against the big bad guy. After my party won, I specifically chose to capture the witness WITHOUT killing them. During the fight, one of the big bad evil guy's lieutenants shows up with his men. The BBEG's lieutenant announces that he's going to fight on our side and the game does not let me do anything about that. It is impossible for me to target them, destroy them or protect myself in any way. My character simply agrees to be supported by them, without anything I can do about it. After the fight is won, the lieutenant says "Ohh yeah, one final thing." and then proceeds to move between my party unchecked, goes to the witness (that I had specifically captured alive) and simply executes him in front of everyone (because said witness had damning evidence against his boss). During all this my character was not allowed to do anything, nor was he allowed to do anything afterwards. The lieutenant didn't even escape or anything like that. He just said there and wished me better luck next time. My character said "aww shucks" and was forced to simply move along, because, see, IT WAS NOT YET TIME FOR THE LIEUTENANT TO MEET HIS END. The entire game is full of writing like that. Not recommended, stay away from this drivel.
I suppose I got my money's worth judging from my hours count, but whatever this game was supposed to be is ruined by lazy, antagonistic game design. Each encounter is a set-piece designed to be as annoying to the player as possible. Entry points are fixed, you only get a few spaces of "choice" where your troops go. From that point, enemies are always positioned in advantageous areas, objectives are placed in such a way that you always must go the long way around, and are always behind cover from where you are, etc etc. The designers were so far up their own ass trying to make "difficulty" but all they made was a frustrating mess. Tactical encounters after Act I consist of an elaborate game of "Mother May I?" where if you have the right character builds to counter all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ abilities the AI has (that you don't have access to) you can get past the encounter with just moderate annoyance. This wouldn't be such a huge problem, except that you can't respec your characters. and not only that, the characters that you recruit other than your base 6 party all have random talent points chosen. They actually expect you to save scum or spend hours recruiting and dismissing characters if you're trying to get a character to have a certain build. Another example of the designers smelling their own farts is this stupid conquest system that is like a minigame that's impossible to lose. Battles are determined by these "stratagems" or cards that you choose to employ and unless you're in a coma there's no challenge at all, and you find it's simply a timewaster to pad playing time. In fact everything about this game seems to be designed strictly to waste your time. Act I was tolerable, and I kept pushing hoping I would find the fun somewhere in this mess. Unfortunately it seems I've wasted 65 hours of my life on it, don't make my mistake.
This is some of the most fun I have had in a tactics game in a long time. I was completely unaware of this franchise, and through random chance one of the guys in my community was talking about it and now I have logged 88 hours in about a month of ownership. So given the significance of that number lets start in on a review. > I do not play games on that kind of hours invested these days, so take that as your first recommend. > Story with nuance. "Your choices matter" means something in this game, like... ***ACTUALLY***. You make the wrong choice in a dialogue, maybe you go the wrong way with a quest, and you won't have a game over, but you *will* feel it later when the game is having a laugh because you goofed earlier. Awesome in an ironman game. Yeah, you'll want to go back to fix the problem, but ironman FORCES you to accept the consequences of your choices (for the most part) > Difficulty. Honestly, I cannot go into much more about why I like this game without dropping spoilers, so I won't. Suffice to say, there are a lot of people out there saying that this game is impossibly difficult, and I will say that if you try to play it on Hard or above it will happily stomp your face into the pavement. I actually lost one of the tutorial fights, and nearly lost the very first combat of the game on Hard, and that is NOT the highest difficulty. So all you guys who enjoy a bit of the whip in your games will certainly appreciate that HARD is HARD. Final thoughts are for you, the would be buyer, and your first moments in the game. You cannot change your mind on your class, you cannot respec your talent points, and you cannot undo the upgrades to your campsite. So... THINK ahead. Your freebee here is this. Play a Sagitarius (archer class). The game will give you two princeps (heavy shield bois), a sagitarius, a triaris buffer/medic, and a veles (fast boy). While the in game tools will tell you that Princeps is the most straight forward class, and this is not untrue, there are MANY combat encounters which will restrict you to having only your default party members in the fight, and having TWO archers is so unbelievably useful that you will thank me later. To the devs, thanks for what you're doing, and I'm glad that you have not abandoned this IP, especially since I just found it myself. Vale.
I want to give this game the best review but its just not possible. Game itself is wonderful, great story, fun mechanics and fighting, cool inventory and micro games. HOWEVER!!! I now have a campaign with 26 hours in and it ended in a game breaking bug not letting me leave the market, litterally stuck in that area game breaker. Then I have a separate campaign with 37hrs in and got another game breaking bug that doesnt allow me to leave my Villa. This would probably be a top 3 game of mine all time, but the bug that completely ends ability to play campain any longer is soul crushing
It’s definitely a bit too long and meandering, but rather OK among XCOM clones. I could’ve perhaps liked it better were it focused around a single region but with more depth to the strategic mini-game. Sucked me in just fine though, owing to its personal story with various ups and downs. May not be for the stereotypical Rome fan due to grrl power crap. It's about 40h long if you don't figure out how to speed up combat animation. Don't be an idiot like me and do it in the prologue, not in the last two hours of the game.
