Very decent turn based game. Don't really have much more to say - story is ok, the tactical combat is ok, the army management is ok. It doesn't really excel in any particular area, and in a few it feels unfinished or rushed, plus the balance of some things is off, but overall there really isn't anything bad so it was a pleasant experience getting to the end.
I liked this game, it offers a great story, good writing (even contains latin), fully voice acted, choices matter leading to multiple endings, you command a roman legion, characters develop as you play, you can exploit battles for easy wins by spamming greek fire (which is just a molotov) or torches if you are poor and you get to sleep with Cleopatra. But, it does have it’s flaws. My main complain being the legion battles. They just resume around picking the highest green numbers and auto-resolve stuff. And by stuff I mean that it’s just a bunch of icons clashing with each other in an animation which you can skip, you have absolutely no control, just make sure you got enough soldiers, fill up the commander slots, and during battles pick stratagems which have the best numbers, that’s it. Fortunately, those battles play fast, but still, it is one of the most boring things in the game. BTW, speaking of boring, do yourself a favor and turn up the Combat Speed from Options. As for the tactical gameplay, well, I am divided on it, mainly because of balancing. As as stated fire is OP and pair that up with poison which blocks healing, you got yourself in a pickle. But access to both are more in your hands rather that the enemy’s, they either use fire or poison, but rarely both at the same time (btw, fire/burning and poison are DOTs which bypass shields, combo them up with bleed too and watch even bosses ascend to the roman gods in about 3 turns). The biggest challenge in the gameplay was to not get one character surrounded, because enemies are like wolves, they are hell bent focused one just a character. But not everything is easy, some battles posed a challenge, however it is a shame that most of such cases were made challenging because enemies keep on spawning in waves and eventually becomes overwhelming. So, it might not be the level of X-com when it comes to the tactical gameplay, but it sure makes it up with the story, choices do matter, art style is great, didn’t encountered major game bugs, has likable characters, and even teaches you a bit of latin, you even get a glossary in main menu going through common words used in the game and their definitions. What can I say, I rec it for any tactics enjoyer, and maybe even give the previous installment, Expeditions: Viking, a try, it ain’t as good as this but still it’s alrigh.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,402 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

“Expeditions: Rome” disappointed me on my first playthrough, but replaying it on easy redeemed the game in my eyes. I came at it interested in the RPG aspects and turn-based-combat, and to be fair, the story and interactions with the other personalities in the game were great. Even the romance, while short, was pretty sweet also. And playing as a queer woman legionnaire, while historically inaccurate, lent a nice spin to the setting. Not to mention, others reacted to your gender to an extent, if perhaps far less than they would have in reality, but never to your sexuality. (5/10) In a historically accurate ancient Rome, women had no legal or social standing, almost no rights and couldn’t own property. So, while male with male pairings were historically possible, women with women were not. Given this, I appreciated that the game chose to veer away from historical accuracy regarding ancient Roman misogyny and patriarchal values to offer a few inclusive romances but feel it worth mentioning for those who prefer historical accuracy over an appeal to a broad audience. However, that’s where the positives initially ended for me. Dealing with the battles involving the legion was an abysmal experience of annoyance and drawbacks. It felt nearly impossible to come out ahead without losing a large chunk of your forces and replacing them was incredibly costly on normal, but mitigated on easy. Not to mention, the economy of said battles was illogical and became worse the more strategies you unlocked. As the chance of getting those events that you need, such as those increasing loyalty, became scarcer and scarcer. By act three on my first attempt, I was winning battles, but the loyalty took a large hit each time, nearing -100. And replacing the dead soldiers costs more than you could possibly earn by selling off the spoils. So, even though I enjoyed the combat where you controlled your character and a small team of close companions greatly, I still got stuck and had to give up on my first subpar playthrough because of the armies. What’s more, often you’re made to use these same annoying and bland units to fight in regular battles as well; sometimes even several battles at once. Forcing you to spread your real units thin and instead rely on unmodifiable units. In short, go for it if you’re in the mood for a military simulation first and an RPG second. The "flawed" systems in my eyes would be a great selling point for you, like the challenge of resource management. From that perspective, the game is about succeeding despite a series of unfair variables, and that is what makes it a good strategy game, but not a great RPG, in my opinion. So, while I’ll rate it (5/10) because of the experience I had playing, if you enjoy every aspect of it, it would be much easier to recommend.
this game is fully alright. if someone told me they liked it, i'd understand why. but for me at least, it's missing that extra spark that really interests me in a game and its world. for example, the game plays lip service to roman misogyny(no fighting, few rights, no first name), but still puts a female main character in charge of a legion right off the bat. it's mainly because your character is a nepo baby and your commanding officer is a powerful family friend, but still feels weird! it'd make more sense, given that you're fleeing assassins and politics, to do as another character does and crossdress for the duration of the war. instead, systemic misogyny is brushed aside with a single victory. it makes the setting feel hollow. another problem, it barely feels like your dialogue choices change anything. if you say something approving, the other characters will act like you're disapproving and need to be convinced. if you're mean you get the same promotion as if you were nice. if you spare a man's life and use him to sneak into a city, surprise! the enemy general saw you coming anyway and you still have to fight. and the rest of the characters feel archetypal and bland. caeso is a mildly misogynistic yes man, the old man is just there to stroke his beard and say vague and approving things, the gladiator just yells about how you should kill everybody, and julia is roman mulan. so who cares? not me. the gameplay is boring too. no magic, obviously, so party battles are just one simple and plain fight after another. and the army battles are an overly complicated mess that comes down to "the bigger army wins". it's just dull. a game like this that handles all of these aspects(writing, choices, party and army battles) far better is rogue trader. go check that one out if you haven't already played it.
