Europa Universalis III is a solid grand strategy game with a lot of depth, covering centuries of history and letting you control pretty much any nation you want. The mechanics are interesting, and it’s satisfying to manage diplomacy, warfare, and economy. That said, the UI feels outdated and clunky, and the game can be frustrating if you’re used to modern standards. Compared to EU4, it lacks polish and some quality-of-life features that make the newer game way more enjoyable. If you find EU3 on a good discount, it’s worth picking up to see where the series started. But if you’re new or want the best experience, go straight for EU4 — it’s a much better, more refined game. Final score: 7/10 Good history and strategy, but EU4 is the superior choice.

Europa Universalis III Complete ist kein Spiel, das einem sofort entgegenkommt. Es wirft einen eher mit einer Landkarte, unzähligen Zahlen und dem stillen Hinweis ins kalte Wasser, dass man jetzt bitte ein ganzes Reich führen soll. Und genau das macht irgendwann seinen Reiz aus. Man beginnt als kleine oder große Nation im Jahr 1399 und kann über Jahrhunderte hinweg praktisch alles beeinflussen: Krieg, Handel, Diplomatie, Kolonien, Religion, Wirtschaft und innere Stabilität. Dabei geht es nicht nur darum, möglichst viel Land auf der Karte einzufärben. Oft ist es genauso wichtig, Bündnisse klug zu wählen, Aufstände zu verhindern oder nicht wegen eines schlecht vorbereiteten Krieges die eigene Staatskasse zu ruinieren. Besonders spannend finde ich, dass keine Partie wirklich gleich läuft. Kleine Entscheidungen können große Folgen haben, historische Entwicklungen nehmen plötzlich einen ganz anderen Verlauf und aus einem unscheinbaren Staat kann über viele Jahre ein mächtiges Reich werden. Dieses langsame Wachsen fühlt sich unglaublich befriedigend an. Natürlich merkt man Europa Universalis III sein Alter an. Die Oberfläche ist sperrig, die Lernkurve brutal und vieles erklärt sich nicht von selbst. Wer ein schnelles, zugängliches Strategiespiel sucht, wird vermutlich früh die Geduld verlieren. Wer sich aber gerne in komplexe Systeme einarbeitet und Freude daran hat, langfristig zu planen, bekommt hier ein enorm tiefes Grand-Strategy-Spiel. Die Complete Edition bietet dazu so viel Inhalt, dass man locker hunderte Stunden in verschiedenen Ländern und Epochen verlieren kann. Alt, kantig und nicht besonders einsteigerfreundlich – aber für mich ein echter Strategieklassiker mit enormer Tiefe und diesem gefährlichen „nur noch ein Jahr weiterspielen“-Gefühl.
i do truly enjoy losing all of my ships in the unknown seas, then get 7 revolts in a far away colony with zero way to get troops over there. fun. its especially fun that it takes 5 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ millennia to get a competent navy back, especially as the French because the English WILL ♥♥♥♥ my arse over if i dont have a navy of like 30 ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ships Edit: After playing for a... MUCH longer (another XCIX hours on Deaths and Taxes ontop of the XCIX hours here) I thought I'd remake this review to reflect what I think now. It's generally pretty good, the colonisation system genuinely sucks though. That isn't unique to EUII unfortunately but it is annoying. The HRE is... annoying, too. It makes it insanely hard to expand eastwards (or south) as any non-HRE member, especially as Sweden, France, and Denmark without getting half of the empire on your arse because you dared to attack Alsace and Lorraine so you could have France's modern borders. Even then, expanding into the lowlands is beyond annoying since they, too, are in the HRE. Defender of the faith system is pretty annoying too. Makes it... hard to expand into an area that isn't your religion when you aren't already a relatively capable nation. It makes sense for Sunni nations, since typically they'll have worse tech (Morroco, Tunisia, most of North Africa besides the Mamluks) and lower forts, making it easy to conquer them, but for Christian countries? It's just... annoying. If I dare to want to try and, I don't know, expand into Lithuania as Muscowy? Well now I have the defender of the faith (which, annoyingly, usually happens to be a great power) on me as well. It's a cool mechanic, but it's still annoying. Naval attrition is kind of annoying as well, but I do think it's necessary to prevent you from just... sending a ship all the way to India the second you unlock colonisation with zero issue. Same with Colonial range limits. Still, really good game, would recommend to anyone who likes RTS history games.
Enough complexity to make it difficult but not to much to make the game unplayable. It's a good game!
