DUSK

What happens when you take all the right lessons from 25 years of shooters? You get DUSK! A phenomenal boomer shooter with slick movement, satisfying guns, fluid level design, and fantastic worldbuilding. Right out of the gate, DUSK puts you in a predicament. You wake up in a room with three chainsaw guys charging at you, and all you have to defend yourself are two sickles. You swing frantically, but take a lot of damage. Movement helps, but you are eventually overpowered and fail. You try again, but this time you notice the red gasoline can to your right. You pick it up, throw it at the chainsaw guys, and BOOM! Vaporized. The explosion also flings some barrels across the room, and where they stood, you now see a small crevice you can crouch into. There’s a gun there. You pick it up, a sound cue plays, and a message reads: “You found a secret.” It’s such effective design, and it immediately puts you into the right mindset. Because DUSK isn’t just a fun ’90s movement shooter. It’s also full of physics and interactivity that deepen both combat and exploration. Its varied and constantly evolving level design is littered with secrets, surprises, alternative routes for the creative, and secrets within secrets. Some of the later ones blew my mind a little with how they played with expectations, or reinforced the crazy worldbuilding. All the weapons feel great, though a few of them can feel a bit safe. But outside of boss fights, they all have a purpose, and I got about equal playtime out of each of them. Enemy design across its episodes is great. Somehow, it even manages to become horror multiple times throughout its episodes. Boss fights would probably be my only complaint here. Some of them have spectacle or fun nods to them, but they are, for the most part, just regular enemies with more health and slightly bigger attacks. DUSK is light on narrative, but has excellent worldbuilding. It really feels like you’re going through a Lovecraftian nightmare of madness. Pair that with great sound design and amazing music that rips and tears, and it becomes unforgettable.
