Inspired by the 1983 cult classic film, Wargames, DEFCON superbly evokes the tension, paranoia and suspicion of the Cold War era, playing on the fascinating aspects of psychological gameplay that occur during strategic nuclear warfare.

Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 0.11/day in the week to Aug 4 → 0.57/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.
About
DEFCON, inspired by the 1983 cult classic Wargames, is a Cold War-era strategy game simulating global thermonuclear war. Hidden in an underground bunker, your goal is to annihilate enemy populations while protecting your own. Fragile alliances and betrayals shape the high-stakes gameplay, as every attack exposes you to retaliation. With its minimalist interface, DEFCON tracks death tolls in real-time, blending psychological tension with strategic depth. In nuclear Armageddon, everybody loses. You just have to lose the least.

Experience the chilling reality of global thermonuclear war in DEFCON. Position submarines, silos, and air defenses to engage in strategic nuclear exchanges. Every attack reveals your own vulnerabilities, making each decision a high-stakes gamble. The minimalist, military-style interface, and chilling soundscape heightens the tension.

DEFCON shines in multiplayer, where alliances are forged and broken in a heartbeat. Engage in brinkmanship, balancing aggression with self-preservation, to avoid triggering total nuclear war. The ultimate goal: ensure you lose the least, as paranoia and betrayal dominate every moment.

DEFCON doesn’t just simulate war — it emphasizes its devastating cost. Real-time death tolls track the human impact as cities are obliterated and the globe plunges into darkness.
DEFCON was the 3rd major game from acclaimed indie developer, Introversion Software, which then went onto to develop the BAFTA winning game, Prison Architect.
Introversion Software has been developing games since 2001, and stands behind acclaimed titles like Uplink, Darwinia, Multiwinia, Prison Architect, Scanner Sombre, and their latest release, The Last Starship. Introversion has garnered both critical and commercial success being recognised with multiple awards including the IGF grand prize for Darwinia and BAFTA for best persistent game (Prison Architect). They have sold more than 4M copies of their games worldwide.

"Mein Führer, I can WALK!"
DEFCON is depressing. So if you don't like that, play something else. Everybody dies, it is horrible, and everything about the game, from the music to the graphics, is dreary and bleak. The entire game is a big reference to the movie WarGames (1983). It is not subtle about it at all. I consider WarGames a good movie, so I do not mind the references. The gameplay is interesting, for a little while. All sides are balanced apart from geography. The game is about making sure you kill more of the enemy people than they kill of yours. Given the fairly limited set of units, this generally plays out more or less the same each time. This gets repetitive pretty fast. There is not much variation in play style. One thing which frustrated me is that controlling your units is extremely difficult. Units left to their own devices will be completely useless, so you need to micro-manage. However, units are also very slow to respond to your orders. This makes precise control impossible. Combine this with the fact that the game is real-time and cannot be paused by default, and any fun drains out of the game real fast. The AI, meanwhile, can control units perfectly. The AI is not actually good at the game, at least at the strategy level. But the fact that it can actually control its units means that even on a level playing field you will probably lose, because you can't get your units to behave. Another glaring issue, is that this game does not function offline. Want to play by yourself without an internet connection? Too bad. Sometimes even when you do have a connection the game fails to authenticate and only lets you play the demo. Enraging. Not recommended. I guess if you really like Global Thermonuclear War, or some other game with simple mechanics and little gameplay variation like chess, you might go for this. In my opinion, the only winning move is not to play.
Gather your friends, count down to 0. Nuke them. Don't look at your cities, it's just numbers anyway. Nuke the crap out of every single one of them. Role play as current news in period of time. And when then do it again, because follow up strikes are the only way to know for sure that the bastards are dead.
