Starmade is a free game (direct from star-made.org) that you can purchase on Steam for $14.99. It has simple yet deep systems that build upon each other in the process of building the perfect star station, capitol ship, or mining vessel. These systems drastically change and make you relearn the game each time the temperamental core community votes for a change from the old system every few months. From shield systems you have built into your saved ship blueprints to the mechanics and correct scaling of power blocks and distribution - all that can be swept away and a new learning curve implemented in the next patch/"update" in the name of progress. After nearly 12 years this game is still having an identity crisis.
Jesus christ I bought this game in highschool and it's still in early access. That's 14 years it's been in Early Access I come back to the game every couple of years and it just no longer hits the mark each time, hoping for improvements. Something I knew is completely different but doesn't feel better or intuitive so I get hesitant having to relearn everything again

Abandoned after being destroyed by the power patch.
Was better to leave abandoned rather than handing over reigns to the community for updates. Things like this lead by a community of people with everyone having an opinion never ends well. Good luck.
TL:DR the games such a frustrating mess to get into, I haven't been able to get into it and actually find out what it's about. You'd think after all this time they would have least updated the tutorial. Getting into this is brutishly frustrating, there's no real tutorial, just a vague set of useless videos that don't really explain much of anything and keybinds that don't seem to work right. Alignments that refuse to let you pick orientation without explanation etc. I should never have to refer to third party documentation just to play the absolute basics of the game. I get 20 mins of bashing around the start blindly and just give up, every, single, session... Then try again in a few more years thinking 'oh hey, introduction flow might have been tested and upgraded' only to be massively disappointed and give up again. Props to whoever thought it was a good idea to put a wall of text containing a warning and instructions on a tiny scroll-able window and gives you a 20 second deadline to process the information before it undos your changes. ...Really?
It's or was a great game back in the day when they was an active community. Unfortunately this game is still "Early Access" the community is not very active and unfortunately the online multiplayer servers are minimal with very few ever having players. Don't get me wrong this game has massive potential if the community was able to be brought back and have active development again.
initially this looked like abandoned ware, but it looks they are back working on it again with the latest update. so glad too because this game was awesome, very sophisticated crafting and ship and station building. rwally glad they have picked it up again
played this in middle school i've graduated college YEARS ago now and this is still early access was fun but pretty complicated
Bottom line up front: This a great time to try Starmade as a first time user. I wish it had more attention right now since Schine and the community are grinding on this thing. THE GAME IS BACK IN DEVELOPMENT. Simply put, this is actually a really good game. It hits two main points that would attract sandbox folks to this game and that's very robust creativity and a well designed logic system. This game just has logic blocks that you tie together so even an entry level individual can enjoy the logic aspect of the game. This is opposed to Redstone from minecraft is cool BECAUSE it's unreasonable. Because of it's long status in early access a lot of old players will complain that the game is not complete yet, but I'll hit that topic in a moment. It has a lot of jank, as all voxel games do, and it has a steep learning curve to get to some of the really rewarding experiences, as most voxel games don't. Veteran players are burnt out, waiting for content and waiting for the game to leave early access. This will result in a lot of jaded reviews. I wish these negative reviews would spend more time to express their impression of the game the first time they loaded in. I wish they talked about finding youtube videos explaining the mechanics to try to build viable strip miners and combat vessels based on Star Trek and Eve Online. I wish they would attract new users to the game instead of trying to turn them away. We need NEW players trying this game. For it's price, it's worth 5, 10, 30, 100 hours of your time. I played solo a lot as a relaxation room and I played on several hosted servers. The community was great (except for one guy who I won't witch hunt, lol). It has less multiplayer specific features, outside of choosing to roleplay, than similar games but the basis is there. Starmade is an incredible idea that was actually fairly well executed early on. It didn't gain the same momentum that Minecraft did, and it more ways than one it is significantly deeper and more complex than the Minecraft as it was when this game hit Steam.
Extremely in depth, more so than it looks. When you learn the game it gets very addicting.
