Pretty mediocre game outside of the physics base combat but you can't even enjoy that since it crashes during combat.

There is an incredibly bright, overbearing red vignette effect that appears on your screen when your health is around 30%. It's impossible to see what is happening behind it and there is no way to turn it off. I'm a bit shocked more people aren't complaining about this.

Historically important game, Arkane made great improvement after the release of Arx Fatalis years before, and did very well designing the environmental interactions and creating the freedom for players to accomplish the objectives. The puzzles and secrets are also very good, not repetitive at all. If you played and enjoyed their Dishonoured series which came years later, the game is very friendly to play. Together with Heroes of Might & Magic V being published in the same year, the legendary M&M series was fortunately kept alive. Unlike the Crusaders or Warriors of M&M, Dark Messiah is the first try to bring M&M into a first-person action game, thanks to the Half-Life Source engine. At that time Source engine was the one that probably had the best physics and one of the most realistic light/shade effects. I don't know what else that made Arkane and Ubisoft decided to collaborate with Valve, but it has proved to be a success. More intriguingly, Dark Messiah is one of the earliest 3rd party games that sold digitally on Steam (I also remember Darwina), and Steam then started transforming from a Half-life multiplayer tool to a digital game retailer like everyone knows nowadays.
