Let's be honest, this game was never good in the first place.
the story of this game is probably more interesting than the game itself and while one day the devs might have a great game, that would depend on them actually finishing the damn thing. Basically a scam at this point and seemingly totally abandoned.
Good alpha. And ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ full game possible. :(
The pre stream release version of the game were better in a lot of ways in my experience. The version available on Steam is still a lot of fun to play and I would’ve been happy to pay the full price on Steam, but all the better that the developer provided Steam keys for existing players. Doing a co op world went a long way to smooth over any poor spots like excessive or aimless travel required to find new points of interest or important gear. My friend and I collected basically everything from the initial region and were able to grind out the bosses with enough persistence and kiting strategies. Some of the dungeons, etc. would have been more difficult than they were worth if I was solo and may have led me to abandon playing the game prematurely. The biggest problem and reason my play time stopped abruptly after the first region was losing access to all the relics, especially the travel ones like the hang glider, that I had tracked down. I was not interested in restarting with nothing at that point and became disinterested in playing further. Just wandering the completed region was more fun to me beside I enjoyed traveling via the great I’d collected, but I ran out of incentive/ new locations to explore. That initial world and my time with the non steam version easily got my moneys worth even with the limited repeatability of its content. Just a shame that a game so focused on procedural generation didn’t lead to more longevity. I recommend the game with the following disclaimers/cons: -clarity can be lacking inside the game, so searching online for answers was occasionally required to understand item combos etc. -the game is better suited for co op play than solo -there are significant diminishing returns are continuing to play beyond the first reason besides progress basically resets. -early game travel is a slog that is only redeemed was the right gear is acquired to increase pace of exploration. -there’s an air of incompleteness to the game still that requires extra effort to work around and takes me out of the immersion the game can have. In contrast, here’s my favorite aspects/pros: -game aesthetic was immersive and enjoyably peaceful. Just ambling through the world was a nice experience early on. I still did this occasionally after travel picked up. -late game travel and combat throughout my play through were consistently fun to engage with. Occasionally, enemy scaling felt a bit off in both directions. -The npc towns, friendly travelers, and tamale animals were endearing. Very cute visuals. The speech sound effect brought a decent amount of nostalgia for older rpgs. -The game does open world well. The quests and map offer clear enough milestones to work towards, but I felt entirely free to just explore and do content in whatever order I wanted. (That non linear nature might be responsible for the scaling I remarked on.) The game kind of feels like spending an extended period of time decompressing in a secluded woodlands cabin. It’s a great palette cleanser for other high octane / challenging games, but also has aspects like the combat to keep me engaged when I wanted something more. It doesn’t really do anything exceptionally unique and better than other options, but the combination of all the good bits make a game that continues to interest me over the years, even if I don’t actually play it as much as other great games at its price point.
The open world generation of this game is quite unique in giving a decent amount of generation of different terrains. The gameplay loop feels fairly repetitive. Start from square one, become powerful in a zone and then collect a small bonus to a permanent state which doesnt really effect power. This makes the completion of zones not feel as satifying due to the perks of completing an area being the ability to slightly clear another area slightly faster. I think that the game could use either more story driven elements to reward the vast exporation basis of the game. OR. Have an element of the game reward system of each completed zone build into your characters strength. These thoughts aside I would still reccomend this game and would love to see it build into a fuller version of itself!
